In this volume of selected letters of the novelist and poet George Meredith (1828-1909), the editor has included letters with such figures as Virginia Woolf (Stephen at the time), Paul Valery, Thomas Carlyle, Madame Daudet, Edmund Gosse, Alfred Tennyson, James Thomson and many others. The letters, most of them previously unpublished, reveal the myriad world of Meredith's life and thought. The selection includes the two earliest letters extant written by Meredith just after he had left Neuwied, his school in Germany. It also includes Meredith's first letter to Chapman & Hall concerning his project for the publication of his first volume of verse, and another Meredith wrote to the same publisher in connection with a cookery book which his first wife, Mary Ellen Peacock, was preparing for publication.

Meredith for Specialists

I ordered this book, supposing it would be a selection of the most revealing and characterful of Meredith's letters, and was disappointed to find it is essentially a supplement to Cline's three-volume edition (1970), giving letters either omitted by Cline or printed in an incomplete form. Most of the new letters are short and of limited interest, though the annotation by Shaheen (the author of one of the best studies of the novels) is impressively learned and generally reliable. This book is essential reading for the Meredith specialist, but cannot be recommended to the general reader. Meredith was too reserved to be a great letter-writer, comparable to Cowper or Keats; but his style, vigorous and free of cliche, is as delightful in his letters as in his novels. The best place to begin remains his son's two-volume edition of selected letters, published in 1912 and easy to pick up via the internet.

A wealth of awesome LOST content for new viewers and old!

I have the pleasure of being one of the 50 plus contributors to this compendium. But, that hasn’t caused too much bias in my feelings towards what the editors have accomplished. This is a very thorough collection of articles, blog posts and analysis from the era when LOST aired and changed the television landscape forever. It has been organized in a way that is compelling to read from cover to cover. But, this is a book that is only enhanced by its e-book features. There are handy interactive links in each chapter to read summaries of each post allowing you to choose which one you want to read. There are links back to those summary pages within each post. And in the recap section you can easily jump to the next episode without scrolling through miles of awesome content. Each article has a link back to the original internet source material (if it still exists) and an indicator to the wealth of comments attributed to each post.

There were many opinions on if LOST stuck the landing in the end. Whichever side of the fence you landed on, you will no doubt come out of this book with a more informed opinion of the show and what questions were or weren’t technically answered. There is an entire chapter featured on that polarizing series finale and tons of information for lovers and haters to chew on!

I’ve certainly found new binge watchers of LOST coming to my blog and thankful that there is a wealth of content so that they can at least feel somewhat like they were part of the 6 year world captivating LOST discussion. Longtime residents of the "Island" and new recruits will find that this very large eBook is a great source of information and insight while navigating your way through LOST.

I really appreciate all that the contributing authors provided. And I especially find that the editors did a wonderful job of articulating and organizing not only every single episode of LOST, but also themes and other important and useful articles pertaining to this deep story.

This eBook has quickly become my number one source for LOST as I rewatch this awesome TV series again and again.

In giving the lectures and in preparing this volume, the design has been: - First, to present, in as elementary a form as possible, the course of reasoning and experimentation that has led to the conception of electric waves; second, to follow this with a discussion of the properties of electric waves and electric oscillations; third, to give a history of the application of electric waves to wireless telegraphy; and fourth, to elaborate the general principles and methods of electric-wave telegraphy in sufficient detail to be of possible use to elementary students of electricity and to amateur and professional electricians engaged in operating and constructing wireless telegraphic apparatus.

The author wishes to express his sincere thanks to Commander S. S. Robison of the United States Navy, to Mr. Elliott Woods of Washington, and to Chief Inspector D. M. Mahood of the New York Navy Yard for their kindness in supplying photographs for some of the illustrations. Author Dirk van Loon has written two Storey books, The Family Cow and Small-Scale Pig Raising. He publishes a monthly newspaper for small-scale rural producers called Rural Delivery. Dirk is a graduate of the College of Agriculture at Cornell University and now lives in Nova Scotia.

A must for pig ownership.

Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

Good book. Dated.

This is a good introduction to pigs and pig raising. There is some good information to glean, but overall the material is a bit dated for current homesteading practices that are focused on pastured pork.

Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

Full of typos

There is nothing wrong with the original, however this version, published by Simon & Brown, is full of typos and mispellings. For instance, the word "the" will be written twice in a row, or the word "nit" instead of "not." It makes me wonder if the translation is bad also, since I don't have another version to compare it to.

Great book but don't buy this edition!

Siddhartha is a great book. This edition, however, is perhaps the worst edition of any book that I have ever--ever--seen published. The number of typos, grammatical mistakes, syntax errors, and other errors is astounding. The publishing house, Simon & Brown, should be embarrassed and ashamed.

It's Like Having Your Own Book Club in Your Living Room!

X (Kinsey Millhone Book 24): A Sidekick to the Sue Grafton Novel is an absolute must if you are reading or have read X or are just looking for a resource to the novel. The Sidekick includes secret meanings, underlying themes, alternate endings and a possible sequel. Literally everything you need to fully understand the novel and so much more. It was so great to spend more time with Kinsey Millhone (one of my favorite private investigators), and explore her motives. The Sidekick is like having your own book club in your living room.

Does exactly what it needs to.

Always been a fan of the Alphabet novels but I must admit it can be a bit hard to follow sometimes, especially the protagonist's growth in between novels (as is the case with any series even half as long as this).

I started reading Sue Grafton's books quite a few years ago so I thought I'd grab this sidekick before starting X, just to make sure that I could have a little refresher in an attempt to avoid finding myself stumbling over any important parts (the last time I read a book in the series before X was many months ago). In that regard, it definitely does the job. Plenty of explanations and a deep, thoughtful analysis of the plot, characters, major themes, and writing style but, and most importantly for me, it's also written in a way that doesn't spoil it for the reader while staying consistent and linear. Overall, very happy.

Great book on IoT and Semiconductor ecosystem

As a foreword :- Based on many years of experience in the trenches of Semiconductors, Apek created a readable book covering the ins and outs and made a strong connection between Moore’s law and macroeconomic policy. Author is able to point out very clearly that without proper economic policies the future validity of this law is at best ambiguous.

This book gave me the map I was looking for so I could look ahead and navigate the ergonomics of IoT market to find the new jobs and IoT initiatives before they are announced - there are so many great points and combined research that it led me to look in places I would never have thought of without a guide!

So much of our business is learned from hit-or-miss experience--it's nice to see a comprehensive look at all the factors to be considered when drafting an economics of Semiconductor market. Particularly when the standard sales process is so counterproductive. You can't use manipulative techniques that are effective for selling dog food or soft drinks to the general public.

Apek touches on the huge number of factors and the social networking aspects of our trade. As he puts it:

'Sustaining Moore's Law: Uncertainty Leading to a Certainty of IoT Revolution' provides an excellent overview of the rapidly changing strategic environment in the semiconductor industry, and some sense of where things are headed. This book has a perspective on IoT that I hadn't seen before. Very creative use of combining technology and economics. It uses a lot of analogies that made it easy to understand then build on them in a practical manner then further applying to a complex system. I bought it on a whim but it opened my eyes to some real business potential. I recommend it to anyone who is keen on semiconductor and IoT convergance.

The International Library of Technology is the outgrowth of a large and increasing demand that has arisen for the Reference Libraries of the International Correspondence Schools on the part of those who are not students of the Schools. As the volumes composing this Library are all printed from the same plates used in printing the Reference Libraries above mentioned, a few words are necessary regarding the scope and purpose of the instruction imparted to the students of - and the class of students taught by - these Schools, in order to afford a clear understanding of their salient and unique features.

The only requirement for admission to any of the courses offered by the International Correspondence Schools, is that the applicant shall be able to read the English language and to write it sufficiently well to make his written answers to the questions asked him intelligible. Each course is complete in itself, and no textbooks are required other than those prepared by the Schools for the particular course selected. The students themselves are from every class, trade, and profession and from every country; they are, almost without exception, busily engaged in some vocation, and can spare but little time for study, and that usually outside of their regular working hours. The information desired is such as can be immediately applied in practice, so that the student may be enabled to exchange his present vocation for a more congenial one, or to rise to a higher level in the one he now pursues. Furthermore, he wishes to obtain a good working knowledge of the subjects treated in the shortest time and in the most direct manner possible.

I like this book, but wish it had more design choices. The instructions for making patterns are great, but not really beginner material. The projects tend to be repetitive, but I think the kids I work with will like some of them.

I bought this book for my 11 year old granddaughter who is quite an amazing seamstress for her age. She liked the book a lot but felt some of the instructions were a little difficult to comprehend.

I purchased this book with the idea to possible to use to teach a children's sewing class. It's a wonderful book for a beginner. It teaches them about fabrics, needles, finishing, etc. I like that it has 17 different projects, so the same book can be used many times without having to continue to purchase different patterns. A great savings. Well worth the cost of the book. I'll be having it on my list of supplies for the class. And teaching multiple projects from this book.

Jack Ward Thomas, an eminent wildlife biologist and U.S. Forest Service career scientist, was drafted in the late 1980s to head teams of scientists developingstrategies for managing the habitat of the northern spotted owl. Against a constant backdrop of partisan politics in the White House and Congress, Thomas discusses issues ranging from grazing in the national forests, long-term pulp timber sales in Alaska, and the Forest Service Law Enforcement Division to the New World Mine near Yellowstone National Park. He considers the timber salvage rider and its linkage to forest health, the Department of Justice and Counsel on Environmental Quality influence on Forest Service policies, and interagency management for the Columbia River Basin.

Woven throughout these excerpts from his diary is Thomas's conviction that the effective, ethical management of wildlife depends on how the management effort is situated within the broader human context, with all its intransigence and unpredictability. Writing in 1995, Thomas says, "Things simply don't work the way that students are taught in natural resources policy classes―not even close. . . .There is simply no way that scholars of the subject can understand the ad hoc processes that go on within only loosely defined boundaries." Wildlife management, he says, is "90 percent about people and 10 percent about animals," and when it comes to learning about people, wildlife managers are on their own. This book is the record of how one man met that challenge.

A bold and honest view of the politics of forest management

In the summer of 1986, Jack Ward Thomas began keeping a journal. "This will be a journal of random thoughts," he wrote. "My purpose is unknown to me, but I feel a compulsion to begin. Perhaps it will serve as a tickler of memory for the book I intend to write, but of course never will."
This first book from Jack Ward Thomas is sure to open the eyes of those who think they know how policy and management decisions affecting the nation's forests are made. Though Thomas has authored well over 400 publications, mostly on wildlife conservation, perhaps the most valuable thing he's written is the set of journals he started eighteen years ago - the book he intended to write.
As Chief of the Forest Service, Thomas is quick to give credit to those he respects, particularly his agency employees in the field. But he doesn't shy from battle, and his assessments of some political appointees in Washington and certain members of Congress are brutal.
Thomas was drafted into the chief's job shortly after Clinton took office, and he took the helm of the agency with typical fortitude - and the naiveté of a researcher thrust into the political cauldron that is Washington DC.
"We don't just manage land," he wrote, "we're supposed to be leaders. Conservation leaders. Leaders in protecting and improving the land."
Statements like that surprised some of the people in Washington, but certainly didn't surprise his longtime friends and colleagues. Thomas had been talking about and writing about conservation for most of his life. And the cream of that conservation writing is in his journals.
This book offers not only insight into the mind and heart of a naturalist, but also a perspective on the politics of natural resource management through the eyes of one of this country's finest conservationists. His writings clarify many of the environmental issues we face today: protecting obscure but endangered species, dealing with wildfire and wildfire fatalities, balancing resource needs against the need to preserve, and the development of policies to address forest health.
This book's a treasure, and will be a valuable addition to the collections of those who care about natural resources management.

A must read to understand how decisions are being made regarding the management of public lands

During his tenure as Chief of the USFS,Thomas soon was given the nickname of "straight talking Jack" by many employees working at the Ranger District level. We had first hand understanding of how the political forces and courts were dictating land management decisions, rather that what was based on sound natural principals. Chief's Thomas diary document that Clinton and Gore were willing to trade off any decisions based on what was best for the land for their own political gain. Thomas diary also certainly demonstrates the difference in decision making by politically appointed and motivated regulatory agencies vs an agency that has direct responsibility for the land. Probably, other Chiefs of the USFS have faced political pressures. However, Chief Thomas was present at a critical point in the agencies history and certainly the right man for the job during that period. He demonstrated for the politically motivated community of Washington DC how a man of principal and a propose larger that personal gain performs his duties. Thanks Jack for keeping a diary! Chuck

Truly a civil servant and not a bureaucrat

Jack Ward Thomas appointed by Bill Clinton as Chief of the Forest Service, was the first Chief that was a scientist. All the others have been for better or worse bureaucrats. For understanding Forest Service policy and how it got that way from late 20th century until now this is key book. Incredible insight from perhaps the most astute wildlife biological scientist and forester of our time, into the inner workings of the Federal government and Congress. Jack Ward Thomas in his tenure was truly a civil servant and not a bureaucrat-- he set a standard for government service.
