About the Author
Fabio Chaddad is associate professor of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri, USA with joint appointment at Insper Institute of Education and Research in São Paulo, Brazil. He currently teaches strategic management, organizational economics and agribusiness management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is also affiliated with the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL), which delivers executive education programs for cooperative leaders, and the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, which supports research, teaching, curriculum development, and outreach in agricultural entrepreneurship. Fabio’s research activities focus on the economics and management of user-owned and controlled organizations and inter-firm collaborative arrangements in the global agrifood system. He has a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri, a Master’s degree in Agribusiness Management from the University of São Paulo College of Economics, Business and Accounting and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of São Paulo College of Agriculture.

Great book!

Having lived in St. Louis, I loved the setting and Southern atmosphere of this story. Glory Dust is an intriguing war story about two brothers fighting on opposite sides, being thrown in circumstances that brings them close again, searching for lost gold, and their goal to bring justice to their sister. I enjoyed it, especially some of the funny parts in the story.

This book: Alexander's Ready Reference for Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, was written by my Great Grandfather, Solomon Augustus Alexander, in 1888 when he was 57 years old. It was taken from a collection of his notes and experiences, "for the benefit of those striving to improve their condition in life". He only had 7 years of formal schooling. He joined the Navy when 16 years old serving 3 years; -- a truly remarkable man. Railroad was his life. He invented many useful items among which were: Spring Adjuster, Rest for Locomotive Cross-Heads, Balanced Slide Valves, Hydraulic Lifting Jack, a Car Coupling and a Rotary Steam Engine.

This is it!

I couldn't put this book of poetry down! I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. Talk about a compelling book of narrative poetry. This is it. I also found the photographs really added another dimension to the "story." I highly recommend it for anyone interested in American wars, or great poetry, or both.

This amazing, important book of poetry vividly presents the experience of American Marines and Korean Civilians. The structure of the poems provide a framework upon which the imagery, emotion and meaning are woven. Within this volume there are two sets of poems. The first are poems that present the experience of an American combat marine from his first idealistic, frightened involvement to the disillusioned and tired veteran. The second, written using the author's adaptation of the Korean Sijo structure present the terror, tragedy and poignancy of a Korean woman struggling to survive invasion, flight, and then the experience of having to abandon her homeland and make a life in a new country. A must-read for serious students of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.

This is a fascinating engineering analysis of the structural effects of the San Francisco earthquake and fire. The authors visited the ruins not long after the event, and before major clearing and reconstruction had taken place. What I found to be the most interesting was the extent of serious structural damage to large buildings like the Fairmont Hotel, the Rialto Building, and the Mills Building, which are still in use today. If you are a serious student of the San Francisco earthquake and fire, the book is a must-read. This particular version is a photocopy (the original is long out of print) with some reproduction issues. The copy that was reproduced had been well marked-up by a previous reader. However, that does not detract from the legibility of the print, which is quite decent. There are a surprising number of photos (over 50), which have been well-chosen to illustrate examples of the damage referred to in the text. The photos suffer somewhat from the copy process, but they are viewable. Unfortunately, the last three photos, a panorama of the city with the damaged buildings labelled, and two maps, were not properly reproduced. Nevertheless, I feel the book is worth four stars.

Anthony Podlecki is professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. Educated at Holy Cross College, Oxford University and the University of Toronto, he taught at Northwestern University and Pennsylvania State University before joining the staff of the University of British Columbia in 1975. He has translated various Greek tragedies and has written several books on Athenian history.

About the Author
Euripides (c. 480 406 BCE) wrote some ninety plays, nineteen of which have survived.

It does the job

Kwintner's edition, being part of the Bryn Mawr series, will get you through the Greek if you're approaching the text early in your career. Don't expect extensive information about the Medea myth or Attic tragedy or copious literary or cultural notes, since Kwintner focuses on morphology, vocabulary (she does seem fond, however, of pointing out the odd instance of chiasmus). Be aware that there are errors in the text: on at least two occasions there was a superfluous omega with iota-subscript instead of a space between two words. There were also parts in the commentary that my professor disputed, but make of that what you will. In terms of the book's physical construction, the spiral-binding is beyond irritating: I found it impossible to open and close with ease. The paper is also cheap, even by comparison to other entries in the BMC series: in terms of durability, it's somewhere between a newspaper and a photo-copy.

Considering the low price and target audience, these are forgivable faults, but skip this volume and proceed directly to Mastronarde's Cambridge edition if you don't need the linguistic hand-holding.

Find another edition if you can

Euripides' Medea is essential reading for any Greek student but Kwintner's edition doesn't really do it justice. There are a lot of bizarre typos in the Greek text -- and a beginning Greek student will have a hard enough time with a perfect text, let alone one that's been messed up by the editor. I bought this for a course and shortly afterward switched to the edition by Denys L. Page. Apparently the Cambridge edition is also very worthwhile.

Fine performance enriches Medea for listener

This fine production shows how hard Medea is to stage even in audio. The power is dissipated when Medea screeches her anger. Her quiet is stronger than her loud. Listening to this performance deepens our feeling for this great play.

yet deeply loved by Burt until he decided his father had betrayed ...

John Burt is a barrister in London who also has an honorary fellowship at his old Cambridge college, which includes a set of rooms - a high privilege. But the man living this CP Snow-like life is actually an American Jew, Phillie born, with a Jewish father and Judaized mother who grew up in a secular, mob-influenced inner city neighborhood akin, I'd guess, to Flatbush before the 60s. This rebarbative, fuck-you-if-you-don't-like-me, deliberately uncharming memoir was written, I think, after he had a success late in life as a poet. The story of his childhood, with parents estranged from one another, a mother from a big Jewish mob family, a father who was aggressive, angry, violent, yet deeply loved by Burt until he decided his father had betrayed him, must sound very exotic to his British friends and colleagues, and one senses that he has told parts of it often - at one point he says that each of his mistresses has had to hear a certain episode that reflects ill upon him before she became his mistress.
One senses that relationships are difficult for him, that he has never been married, and this difficulty extends to us readers. We are being told the whole story in the same spirit in which Burt's mistresses have had to hear it - we have to pass this test before becoming intimate with him.
Reading this book is not always pleasant, brief as it is - but its great moment has nothing to do with growing up Jewish and workingclass in 1950s and early 60s Philly, or about Jewish familiy conflicts, or even coming of age. Its truly great pages are about fishing and skippering small boats off the Jersey shore, learning to know the sea and the weather and what human beings are capable of and are incapable of. His father's fishing mentor, a Tarheel transplanted to the Jersey striper party boat business, is the real hero of the book, and a worthy hero. It is hun that I think about long after I finished - while thinking that the most interesting part of Burt's own story is not the story of the tough kid who went to humble LaSalle College (which we are taught to admire) and then wrote a letter to Cambridge and was accepted (this could be Norman Podhoretz in Making It) - but the story of the vastly unread but deeply humanly experienced young man passing through Cambridge and becoming that most acculturated kind of Brit, a barrister. But that part of Burt's story remains untold, and I suspect will continue to do so.
A memorable and affecting bit. As I said, Burt knew many middle class Jewish kids of his generation who were on their way to Penn and Penn State to become professional men. That was not his plan. But through an accident, he found he could after all go to college, and he prepared himself in a way inconcieivable now: "To me, 'college' meant classical music." Though he had never had any interest in it before, Burt forced himself to listen to the Philadelphia classical music radio station, read reviews, borrow records from the library. That's a bright line between pre-60s higher education and that of the post-60s....
Burt doesnt seem to care if you like his book, or his story, or himself. I'm not sure I do - I'm not sure who will - but there is a cold, Lawrencian quality in his writing that you ought to expose yourself to.

The first installment (one hopes) of a modern Dickensian memoir.

I encountered Dan Burt in the flesh as the deposing attorney for the plaintiff in Westmoreland V. CBS et al. as he stalked the circumference of a conference table for three plus hours, attacking the affidavit I had filed against his client like Basil Rathbone seeking Errol Flynn’s death, except, to my mind, he was Vinegar Joe and I was Tom Sawyer.

My introduction is meant to underscore my personal astonishment at discovering that the same Dan Burt wrote this Dickensian mini-memoir. It stops well short of his later career as lawyer, entrepreneur, and world-class émigré poet, and I yearn for the next installment, but I hereby proclaim that there is not a reviewer for the New Yorker or the New York Review of Books nor The Atlantic who could resist being as captivated as I have been by the book or could resist inviting the world’s attention to it if they would only read it.

Not the least of my present admiration for this man I once feared and despised is the fact that he renounced his American citizenship after George W. Bush’s re-election. I would God I had that kind of conviction.

Dan Burt is a wonderful writer, and this is a great book

Chronicling his difficult childhood, growing up in Philadelphia's crime-ridden Tenderloin district to his journey to Cambridge University, Dan Burt's look back is unsentimental but moving - and brutally real in its narrative; I could put this book down. Writing in a novelistic style, Dan Burt never gives in to nostalgia but his remarkable tale does offer hope, which he so succinctly and elegantly expresses in the last line in this remarkable piece of prose. It should be read with his poetry as it will add a new layer of context to it. Dan Burt is a wonderful writer, and this is a great book. Thought-provoking (and entertaining)!

I originally purchased The Office Writings a year ago, for a Kafka class I took in my final semester of college undergrad. Throughout the class we referenced this book extensively; our whole group was captivated and delighted by the text.

Although the class was a year ago, I continue to think of this text fondly (and return to it regularly).

I still giggle as I think about Kafka's second document "The Scope of Compulsory Insurance for the Building Trades"--his Institute wanted everyone to keep their insurance but the people were not going to be required to do so. (Of course they didn't want to pay more if they didn't have to!) The Institute sent a letter explaining all of the benefits and telling people they were going to lose their coverage (oh no!), so Institute would kindly auto-renew it unless the people opted out directly. Of course not many people opted out. Kafka wrote this a hundred years ago, and he was already dealing with auto-renewals much like what we have today. As our banks began offering "Overdraft Privilege" after they were not allowed automatically charging fees for overdrafts last summer, I kept thinking of Kafka's Institute, and the way they twisted insurance to look like a privilege!

Anyhow, Kafka's office writings are wonderful! Many of his office writings grapple with the same issues that we find in Kafka's other writings; themes that trouble Kafka in his fiction continue to trouble him at work.

The editors of this work provide a skillful analysis of each of Kafka's office documents in the volume. The commentaries are both interesting and relevant and they demonstrate a mastery of Kafka's works.

For anyone who has developed a fascination with Kafka's writing, this book is truly indispensable because it adds another dimension to our understanding of Kafka.

Before not After

Nobody, not even someone such as Sigmund Freud can actually know why anyone writes a story. What one can try to do, in the absence of true knowledge is to create a work of "educated" fiction themself. Why did F.K. write what he did in the way he did? A good question without a valid answer, I feel. To try to pinpoint F.K. by dragging in random bits and piece of his various written work , may shed more darkness than revealing light, when done at his place of employment with only his bosses, and those directly involved with the insurance claims and evaluations assigned as part of his work chores, as his "audience" readers. What is known is that F.K. never expressed feelings of regret for having been forced by failing health, to leave his employment. Looking out the window to the moving "specs" below,as a very young, almost isolated child, must have been very important to F.K. and very likely made an enormous difference in the manner he viewed himself, those closeby, and the way he recorded his beliefs and feelings, whether in his "fictional" writings, or what he said, what he wrote, or didn't. This present book does raise some ideas, maybe even possibilities about F.K, but falls short of an answer. Down Pat

This collection of official texts written by the lawyer Kafka begins our re-evaluation of the life and career of the enigmatic writer Franz Kafka. He held far more important and meaningful posts in the outside world of work than decades of biographies have recorded. And because of this discrepancy and its resolution in this text, we can now tease out some trails from Kafka's legal mind at work in the day job and to his literary creations. Translator and editor Corngold's introductions that specifically point out links between fictional texts and cases Kafka worked on are most helpful.
