Germany's High Sea Fleet, in the World War (Classic Reprint), by Admiral Scheer

Excerpt from Germany's High Sea Fleet, in the World War

The victor has the privilege of writing the story of the war; for one mistrusts the vanquished, because he will try to palliate and excuse his defeats. But we are victors and vanquished at one and the same time, and in depicting our success the difficult problem confronts us of not forgetting that our strength did not last out to the end.

Exceptionally tragic is the fate of our Fleet. It embodied the sense of power resulting from the unification of the Empire, a sense which was conscious of its responsibility to provide for the suitable security of our immensely flourishing political and economical expansion. By creating a fleet we strengthened our claim to sea-power, without which the Empire must wither away, we remained a thorn in the side of the British, and their ill-will was the constant accompaniment of our growth. The freedom of the seas, which we strove for in line with our evolution, England was never willing to grant, even if it had to come to a world-war on the point.

In the four years' struggle which Germany waged against the desire of its enemies to destroy it, the Fleet was able, beyond all foreign expectations, to hold its own, and what is more, it was our conduct of the naval war that succeeded in forcing the stubborn enemy to the brink of destruction. But, nevertheless, we have lost the war, and with the surrender of the German Fleet the expectations of an independent shaping of our destiny have vanished for long enough.

To the history of the naval war, as it presented itself to me and was for some years carried on under my guidance, this book will add a contribution.

bound, dark-background photocopy of an original with underlining and notes
By Wounded Combat Veteran
This is a book w/ a very odd format. It is a bound photocopy of a marked-up original, with underlinings and notes. The background is rather dark. There are no illustrations.

This book is an important one. Much has been written from the Royal Navy's perspective - but one must attempt to understand from the High Seas Fleet's perspective also. Adm Scheer was all too brief in his published discussion; I would like to have had a more full account.

Excellent Analysis of "Go Set A Watchman."
By Kevin Lintner
"Go Set A Watchman" certainly has had its share of controversy.. No one really ever wanted to see Scout grow up and have to deal with adult issues. While "To Kill A Mockingbird" could be very bleak at times, it was the snapshot of young friends remaining true to themselves in troubled times that made it a timeless tale. It has been decades since I last read "Mockingbird" and after I finished "Watchman" I found myself asking "now who was that again" on more than one occasion. So I reread both novels in order or publication and then purchased this fine analysis to help me fully understand what Watchman was all about.

Theveny's analysis is very well written and contains the quality chapter by chapter analyses that I have come to expect from WeLoveNovels. The character list is another standout as it gives you not only the names of the major and minor characters in the book, but also their roles as well. Whenever I need a quality analysis of a novel, the first place I turn to is WeLoveNovels.

Helpful and well written.
By Rosemary M. Goddard
I loved the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee did a tremendous job writing about such a touchy subject as racism. When I heard a lost followup had been found and was being published I was extremely skeptical and hesitant to read it. A few librarian and teacher friends read the followup and did not like it at all. Having not read the book I turned to the Analysis of Go Set a Watchman by Allison Clare Theveny and WeLoveBooks as I have done with a few other books that I have heard differing opinions on. The analysis was in depth and really gave me a clear view of what the book was about. It also explained how the book differed from Harper Lee's first novel and touched on the differences in the characters. The book also mentioned other pieces of literature that have been written that touch on the same subject that Go Set a Watchman is about. I enjoyed reading this analysis and will definitely look for more from this author in the future.

Great Guide
By Stella N.
I was really impressed with the original book and I was looking for a guide that would answer a few questions on it and help me gain a better perspective of it. Well this guide was really nicely written with a complete exploration of the meaning and the overall meaning of the novel. I like how it demystified the characters for me and helped me gain a better understanding of them. Definitely a much better experience of the novel with this one, two thumbs up.

Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident, by Francis Gary Powers, Curt Gentry

U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers is a central character in the movie Bridge of Spies starring Tom Hanks. In his classic 1970 memoir, Powers reveals the full story behind what happened in the most sensational espionage case in Cold War history. After his U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down, Powers was captured on May 1, 1960 and endured 61 days of rigorous interrogation by the KGB, a public trial, a conviction for espionage, and the start of a 10-year sentence. After nearly two years, the US government obtained his release from prison in a dramatic exchange for convicted Soviet spy Rudolph Abel.

The narrative is a tremendously exciting suspense story about a man who was labeled a traitor by many of his countrymen but who emerged a Cold War hero.

Who mourns for Francis Gary Powers?
By John T. Starr
A number of important lessons call out from the pages of this engrossing and rather sad story - not the least of which is that Francis Gary Powers got shafted, folks. Plain and simple.
During his captivity, the press severely tarnished his reputation by publishing sometimes gross misinformation about him and his mission. Some of these misconceptions thrive to this day.
How many people still believe he was under CIA orders to use his infamous suicide pin? (he wasn't even required to carry it) How many people still think he told the Soviets too much? (his handling of the interrogations was very shrewd; he cleverly protected the most important secrets - even after our reckless press published information that threatened to undermine his strategy) How many people really think he was considering defecting to the USSR after release from Soviet prison? (never crossed his mind) Or that he didn't activate the U-2's destruct mechanism because it was allegedly set to destroy both plane and pilot? (completely false rumor started by the Soviets)
Perhaps the saddest part is that after his release, the CIA could have done more to clear his name. But they apparently back-peddled from this effort because clearing his name meant tarnishing theirs (For starters, Powers states that the CIA did not train their U-2 pilots on what to do if captured. These days, practically all military pilots receive such training).
Several years ago I paid for a pristine first edition of this 1970 book, signed by Powers and co-author Curt Gentry (Powers died in 1977). At first I thought I'd paid too much. After reading it, I think I got a bargain.

The Little Known Story of a Great Patriot
By William Reid
I was only 12 years old when FGP was shot down over the USSR and have been following the story ever since. In 1970, I purchased the Operation Overflight book and still have my copy. However, in recent years, the government has released more information on this period of American history. We now know such things as how many flights there were, the objectives of those flights, and other pertinent information about the U-2 program. But the personal information is only found in the book by Powers and in detailing his role in the CIA. He describes how he behaved and how he was treated while in captivity and upon his return to the US. All of this gives us a picture of a private American citizen (and former military man) who was thrust into the Cold War and the controversy about the U-2. I visited the grave site in Arlington Cemetary and just stood there remembering how this brave young man did what he did and suffered what he did for our nation. When the new reprint comes out, be sure to read it as it will, no doubt, reveal much more abour the man, the plane, and the mission.

The Third Point
By Gabriel Toscana Videgaray
With respect to the "Cold War" we usually know the official versions from both the government of the USA and of the USSR. Powers book is extremely interesting because it gives you a private account of somebody that was deeply involved in the U-2 Cold War incident: a third point of view. A point of view that has no "agenda" to push through.
Powers description of his life in prison had for me an almost spiritual meaning. After reading what he went through, I felt grateful for what I have. He mentions, for example, that in prison work is cherished: he and his cell mate fought to have the privilege of cleaning their cell.
On the other hand, his actual experience in jail was very different from what you see in the movies. There was no violence, no torture, no conspiracy to escape. In almost two years he had a chance to speak with only one other prisoner: his cell mate. It was the most boring experience imaginable, so much so that some prisoners lost their minds.
It is difficult not to feel contempt for Dwight Eisenhower who after ordering the flight completely abandoned Powers to his fate. Eisenhower cared much more for his "prestige" than for any person but in the end his prestige went down the drain anyway when his involvement in the U-2 affair was finally known.
Another player that has dramatically dropped in stature for me is Robert Kennedy. His callousness is hard to believe. After all the suffering Powers went through in the USSR for doing his duty for the CIA, R. Kennedy was willing to try him for treason with the only purpose of advancing his political career! The politics surrounding this event are sickening: JFK had invited Powers to meet him at the White House but at the last moment the offer was withdrawn.
In the end, no president or high level politician did anything to obtain Powers'release from the USSR. It was his father whom he had to thank for his release.
Obviously, the CIA did not want this book to be published and 8 years had to pass before it finally saw the light.
I fully recommend the book as it gives you an insight as to how history is really made by real people, in real places, performing real duties.

Very informative; Step-by-step instructions for safeguarding your network
By Derek
I purchased this book hoping I would learn that I have already done a decent job securing my home network. About half-way through the book, I started to realize how poor of a job I had actually done. While many of the basic tips should be common practice, a search of available WiFi in my neighborhood says it isn't as common as it should be. After finishing the book, I followed the author's guidance, step-by-step, to increase my security to a level which gives me comfort again. Thank you for writing this book because I didn't know what I didn't know, and I guess that left my network door wide open.

Poetry. Translated from the Dutch by Paul Vincent and John Irons. 100 DUTCH-LANGUAGE POEMS is a lovely selection of poems written in the Dutch language from the 11th century to the present day. For the poetry lover it is a comprehensive introduction to poetry from the Low Countries and provides a wonderful insight into the themes and issues that influenced generations of poets. The Dutch language and English translations are presented side by side making it a great resource for literature and language students and scholars. A detailed foreword by Paul Vincent and John Irons who selected and translated the poems, as well as an intriguing afterword by Gaston Franssen, assistant professor of Literary Culture at the University of Amsterdam, add additional value to this necessary anthology.

He has translated many of the leading authors and poets from the Low Countries including Louis Couperus, Harry Mulisch, Willem Elsschot, Louis Paul Boon and Hugo Claus.

He was the recipient of the first David Reid Poetry Translation Prize for the translation of Hendrik Marsman's famous poem 'Herinnering aan Holland' (Memory of Holland) in 2006, awarded by the Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature.

I think "Grolsh" is Dutch for beer.
By j a haverstick
Have only had an opportunity to browse. The translators have selected 100 poems from10 different periods, though seven are from 1700 on. readers will presumably have some familiarity with the place of Dutch in the language tree. If your an englisher with a little understanding of German, you'll soon get the drift and be able to figure the originals out by consulting the facing translation. For me, the confusion came from mistaking English vs. German cognates. I do have an old Dutch grammar for back up if I feel that is needed, but readers will also know that Dutch grammar is lighter than German.

The book was apparently designed for college study. I'm just a dilettante who loves poetry and adores bilingual poetry as it really lets you into the original as no translation can. The poetical format, I feel is ideal for bilingual since it is , you might say, constricted. Not the place to dwell on the philosophy of translation, I guess. The translators provide a good general introduction to the poems and there is a critical essay in the back on landscape in Dutch poetry. I'm enjoying it and think if you're looking for a little poetic adventure you might, too.

About the Author

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was an English mathematician, photographer, and prolific writer, especially known for his beloved books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Preferring the company of children to adults, his Alice books were inspired by his friendship with the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, where Carroll was a mathematics instructor.

Andrea D'Aquino has always resisted labels like "art director", "illustrator", "graphic designer" and finds herself happiest straddling the line between all those things. She has worked as a senior art director for major advertising agencies.

As an illustrator and designer, clients include Anthropologie, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, The Washington Post, Elle Magazine, One Kings Lane, Vegetarian Times, Family Fun, Chronicle Books, Uppercase, Flow Magazine, PlanSponsor Magazine, and many others.

Her work has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Art Director's Club, Communication Arts, 3x3 Magazine, The One Club, and The Type Director's Club.

The best Alice I've seen yet.
By Sandra N. Salamony
In this 150th anniversary year, I have seen a few re-illustrated volumes of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This is the first one that made me want to own it for the artwork alone! Andrea's Alice is so contemporary and modern… she is someone I would want as a friend. The scenes are lush and wondrous. I honestly don't know how the Andrea was able to get past the blank page--to re-imagine Tenniel's iconic work must have been nerve-wracking. And yet she succeeded spectacularly. I'm not totally impartial, I have been a fan of Andrea's art for some time. But my review is sincere: this is a keepsake edition, well made from the artwork to the paper and binding.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
By josephine briggs
I purchased this book for a young man who likes science fiction. The drawings are so different than "Alice in Wonderland" pictures. These seem to be for someone older. Some say "Alice in Wonderland" is not a child's book, but has many hidden moments. Whatever. But I think he will enjoy this particular "Alice" story.

By miss tickle
Inventive, colorful illustrations with a surreal sense of visual humor and adult wit entertain and inspire us to reflect on the profound Lewis Carroll nonsensical (or is it?) dialogue that asks nothing less than the bigger questions of life and it's meaning.Somehow, very familiar scenes are re-imagined and refresh this classic text. An unstudied, child-like freshness comes through each page, with unexpected takes on the characters that lets us see them in a new light. Appropriate for kids, but aimed at grown-ups, with a wink to those with a sophisticated sensibility.

The Great War at Sea: A Naval Atlas 1914-1919, by Marcus Faulkner

In the vast literature of the First World War there has never been a naval atlas that depicts graphically the complexities of the war at sea, and puts in context the huge significance of the naval contribution to the defeat of Germany. With more than 125 beautifully designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great sea battles as well as the smaller operations, convoys, skirmishes and sinkings. As well as the well known set pieces such as the battles of Coronel, Heligoland, Dogger Bank and Jutland, the Dardenelles campaign, the North Sea and Channel operations, and the responses to merchant ship losses, the atlas looks at the many significant events at sea which impacted on the land war and which have had scant coverage in much of the naval literature of the era.The distant waters defence of trade routes, the impact of the United States navy in Europe, operations in the Baltic and northern Russia, and Japanese naval contributions in the Middle East are just some of the themes given a new and exciting presentation No other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the naval war in this period and it will become the definitive reference work for enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended across all the world's oceans and had such a significant impact on the outcome of the war.

Immensely detailed and useful, but has issues
By Vince O'Hara
Disclosure: I purchased this book from the publisher, not Amazon. The Great War at Sea is immensely detailed and useful but it has some significant issues.

First problem: Sloppy editing and proof reading. Okay, every book has errors but I opened the atlas for the first time, turned to the preface and read that Britain declared war on Germany in 1915. Within a minute I was on page 3 and on the table of the Navies of the Great Powers I saw that Russia was credited with having ten dreadnoughts in service on the outbreak of war in 1914 (it didn’t have any). Such immediately seen and easily avoided errors are like poison.

Production values. Full color, large format, glossy paper. All this is great. However, turn to that first map on page 3, a two page spread of Sea Power on the Eve of War. The book’s gutter consumes all of Norway and western Sweden, much of central Europe and a generous swath of Africa. This is a problem with all maps printed across two facing pages. The design uses three colors: dark peach for the Entente forces, pale peach for neutrals and deep dung brown for the Central Powers. These colors are ugly, particularly the brown. The colors used for neutral and Entente territory are too similar. Terrain is not necessary on maps depicting naval warfare, but there are occasions where it would have been visually pleasing, and also would have added to the content (the maps dealing with the Dardanelles or the Bosporus, or the Mesopotamian Campaign for example).

The maps themselves. All maps have latitude and longitude and scales in nautical miles and kilometers. This is good. Some have tremendous detail. For example, the atlas has the best one map presentation of the 28 August 1914 Battle of Heligoland Bight I have ever seen. I appreciate how much work went into doing this. Tracks usually have times indicated. All good. The most important consideration, however, is accuracy. The author says that at least three sources were used for each map. I did a close examination of the Dogger Bank map. It shows the entire action across two pages (in this case hardly anything is lost in the gutter). The tracks and times almost exactly mirror the chart from the British Staff Monograph vol. 3. This is fine for the British but not so fine for the Germans. The British version shows the German fleet heading southeast making an eight point turn to port at 0814 and an eight point turn to starboard at 0821. The German chart taken from Groos, Nordsee shows the fleet heading northwest and executing a sixteen point turn at 0817. That’s a big difference and I assume that the German map shows the German movements better. Groos is in the bibliography so I don’t know what happened there.

The geographic coverage is good. There are overview maps for the Adriatic, Baltic and Black seas and two detailed Adriatic maps. The Red Sea makes it in and I appreciated the two post war maps. The North Sea has the greatest coverage as is to be expected, given the absence of Russian, French, Italian, and Austro-Hungarian sources. Pavlovich’s Russian or Sokol’s Austro-Hungarian volumes; or La Marina italiana have a lot of interesting maps that might have replaced maps of relatively minor incidents like the page 44 chart on the sinking of HMS Formidable or the page 34 map of the November 1914 bombardment of the outer Dardanelles forts. This brings up another point: the book has a distinct British bias. For example, the map on page 28 says “Austrian cruiser Zenta sunk off Antivari by the Anglo-French fleet.” Calling a fleet with twelve French battleships, six French and two British cruisers, forty French and two British destroyers, “Anglo-French” may be true in one sense but it distorts reality. The introduction mentions Winston Churchill at least nine times. There is no mention of Austria-Hungary, Italy, or Russia.

So, four stars. I have given this review a critical slant but there is much to like here and I’m sure I’ll be using the atlas a lot. In the end, that’s the ultimate test.

Great Atlas of Great War at Sea
By Bertram A. Workum
Not only is this WW I war at sea atlas an excellent historical tool; it's a beautiful book to boot. It is a great "partner" to Faulkner's earlier work, the atlas of WW II at sea. These are not the first atlases of the world wars, but they ARE the first dedicated to the wars "at sea." As such, they fill a deep void. Battle maps, strategic and tactical, are so important for an understanding of the flow of military action -- on water as well as on land. The many full-color maps are large and clear, Earlier atlases of the wars often did cover major military action on water, but smaller battles were passed over. These atlases include those actions -- some, for the first time. And they do it well.

and I was NOT disappointed! The maps are excellent
By Mark
I anxiously waited for this book to be published, and I was NOT disappointed! The maps are excellent, and the key lists each ship type. The book is set up chronologically, and it make sense. The previous review listed several complaints about the design of the maps, but I found this to be a non-issue. The maps are extraordinary overall, and the book is a valuable addition to my WW I collection. If you want to know about World War I at sea, THIS is a book you need to have!

Concrete Designers' Manual: Tables and Diagrams for the Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures (Classic Reprint), by George A. Hool

Excerpt from Concrete Designers' Manual: Tables and Diagrams for the Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures

The tables and diagrams presented in this manual make possible the rapid designing of reinforced concrete structures in accordance with the Joint Committee Recommendations, the American Concrete Institute Recommendations, the New York Building Code Requirements and the Chicago Building Code Requirements. Some of these tables and diagrams will also be found of such a general nature that they can be used when the designing requirements are different from any of those mentioned. No tables are presented based on the flat slab recommendations of the Joint Committee as these recommendations are so conservative that they are not used to any extent.

The authors have for some time been preparing and using in their practice various tables and diagrams in order to finally obtain complete data in the most, convenient form and of the greatest value to the majority of designing engineers. The collection given in this book is the result.

No attempt has been made to develop theory or to duplicate information not directly relating to concrete design which can conveniently be found in other handbooks possessed by all designers.

Vintage Work of Historical and Contemporary Use Interest
By David A. Nuss
Especially of interest to academics and those engineers who seek touchstone information. It is interesting to use comtemporary strength values for reinforcing steel and concrete and compare the results of using these tables and graphs to contemporary ASD methdology. Many of the buldings designed in this era are still serviceable. This is a useful resource for engineers involved in forensic engineering and refurbishing vintage structures; it can give one a reasonable estimate of structural capacity and save time and follow-on effort. I have used this in investigations of old buildings being turned into contemporary offices, loft apartments and condos.

Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy

In this book the author has had in his mind's eye the reader who, possessing a general scientific knowledge, is anxious to know something, not only of the accomplishments of wireless, but also of the means by which they are attained. The subject is necessarily a highly technical one, and the first four chapters are devoted solely to explanations of the electrical phenomena involved. Which explanations it may be added are really little more than statements of facts illustrated where possible by mechanical analogy. The fifth and sixth chapters deal with the application of these principles to wireless apparatus, and from the seventh chapter onwards the book is devoted to a general survey of the uses to which wireless is nowadays put. No forecast of the future has been attempted as at the time of writing the developement is so rapid that it is beyond anyone to foresee the goal to which it is leading.

A short bibliography has been added including most of the better known books on the subject.

The Snake's Pass: A Critical Edition (Irish Studies), by Bram Stoker

In 1890, The Snake's Pass was published in serialized form in the periodical The People. It is the story of Arthur Severn, an Englishman who has inherited wealth and a title through an aunt who took him under her wing to the exclusion of closer relations. His inheritance includes land in Ireland, and now that he is a man of leisure, he decides to tour the west of Ireland. As Bram Stoker's first full-length novel, The Snake's Pass is a heady blend of romance, travel narrative, adventure tale, folk tradition, and national tale. This early novel shows that, long before Dracula, Stoker used the genre of the novel to engage with questions of identity, gender, ethnic stereotype, and imperialism.
In this critical edition, Buchelt offers detailed and studied insight into both the novel and Stoker's life, demonstrating the significance of The Snake's Pass within the canon of late Victorian literature. The supplementary textual notes, scholarly material, and critical responses enhance the novel without distracting from the text. Readers will find a complexly layered and nuanced work that presents a pointed critique of British cultural attitudes and political positions concerning the Irish and Ireland.

Review
A genuine contribution to the field. . . . Of interest to scholars and students interested in Bram Stoker, late Victorian popular literature and culture, Irish Studies, and postcolonial studies. (Marjorie Howes, associate professor of English, Boston College)

This is an invaluable and much needed edition of an unjustly neglected literary treasure. The Snake's Pass, Stoker's first full-length novel and his only novel to employ an Irish setting, is now made available in a meticulous and considered edition which, together with a fine selection of critical readings, elucidates the complex layers of this deeply engaging work.... A must for lovers of nineteenth-century fiction and of good reads. (Margaret Kelleher, Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama, University College Dublin)

Occult Novel? Not Exactly: Bram Stoker's First Novel
By T.NAKAJIMA
`The Snake's Pass,' the first novel written by Bram Stoker, was published in 1890, about seven years before his Dracula.' You may expect from this title something very bizarre and weird, some strange tale Poe would have written, but the truth is `The Snake's Pass' is fairly orthodox love romance set in the mountains of Ireland.

The story is simple. It is about one Arthur Severn, young and rich Englishman traveling around Ireland. After one stormy night, he encounters a beautiful girl named Norah living with her father Joyce, who was ill-treated by Black Murdock, greedy `gombeen' man (Irish name for moneylender) who had mercilessly taken away their land. There is sub-plot about the hidden treasures of French army, and the local legend about the confrontation of Saint Patrick and The King of the Snakes.

Though the folklore surrounding the evil `King of the Snakes' plays the significant role in the earlier chapters of the book, the story is basically about the adventures of the hero and narrator Arthur, whose love for Norah plays the central role of the novel. Unfortunately Arthur is not engaging enough as character because he is just a rich gentleman from England, whose success is guarantees by his social status. There is no real conflict in his story. Things go too smooth for him.

Bram Stoker effectively captures the gloomy atmosphere of the rain-swept land of west Ireland, but these vivid descriptions of the swamp and slime are often forgotten before the more ordinary story about the hero and his love. Obviously Stoker intended to use the macabre legend of the snakes as sort of metaphor like Shakespeare's Birnam Wood, and the idea of the moving mountain bog might have been more interesting if he had introduced the snake legend with more subtlety.

As it is, Stoker, who had not found the right voice suitable for his supernatural tales yet, sometimes spends too many words on the long geological descriptions, but these prosaic details are painfully tedious, slowing down the actions and weakening the supernatural undercurrent of the novel. Stoker also minutely describes the slimy bogs and incessant raining in the mountains, both of which suggest the dark force affecting the people there, but Stoker's touch could hardly be said imaginative. He surely draws the rocks and trees in the landscapes, but his vision does not have the evocative power of the Whitby cemetery scene, later seen in `Dracula.'

As love story `The Snake's Pass' is nothing remarkable, and as macabre tale it is not simply macabre enough. The book is a romance but flatly told, and most of all, few things are really unpredictable. Not a bad novel at all, but not a great one either.

Dracula's Precursor
By Tyler R. Tichelaar
The Snake's Pass is one of those pseudo-minor classics that would have been forgotten if it were not the first novel written by the author of Dracula, one of the greatest of the nineteenth century novels. The book was published in 1890, only seven years before Dracula, yet it is a long way from Stoker's masterpiece in plot and form. A fan of Dracula may not enjoy it, but a literary or Bram Stoker scholar definitely would. It is actually better written than Lair of the White Worm, a later Stoker novel, but up to the quality of The Jewel of the Seven Stars.

What sets the novel off the most from Stoker's other Gothic works is a real lack of the supernatural in the novel. There is a legend of a snake king driven from Ireland by St. Patrick in the book, but nothing supernatural ever actually occurs in the novel's pages. The mysterious shifting bog is not supernatural at all, and frankly, the dullest part of the novel since Stoker goes into great detail of the measuring and study of the bog, which is being analyzed to determine where a lost treasure may be found. The conflict exists between the villain, Murdock, who is willing to do anything to find this treasure, and Arthur Severn and his friends. Arthur falls in love with Nora, whose father is cheated by Murdock to gain control of his land which may have the hidden treasure on it.

The first half of the book is bogged down with descriptions of the bog until Arthur falls in love with Nora, and then a tender, but not terribly exciting love story occurs. The book picks up speed halfway, yet still moves relatively slowly until the dramatic ending scene during a storm where Murdock and the protagonists struggle to find the treasure. This final scene makes the book worth reading, both for itself, and as an example of the talent Stoker had already developed for pacing and drama which he would use consistently in Dracula.

The book is not for the general reader, but I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the British or Irish novel--it is the only novel Stoker set in his native Ireland. One wishes Stoker, as a more mature writer, had written another novel of Ireland, perhaps with vampires included.

- Tyler R. Tichelaar, author of Iron Pioneers and The Queen City, available on Amazon.

“A Pure Idyll of Ireland”
By Eclectic Reader
Bram Stoker (1847-1912) took up writing as an important aspect of his life and career late in life. The Snake’s Pass (1890) has long been considered to be Bram Stoker’s first novel, but the discovery of a serialized novel, The Primrose Path (1875), is now known to pre-date The Snake’s Pass. Nonetheless, The Snake’s Pass is still frequently cited as Stoker’s first novel and remains a fascinating early work giving insight into the author’s creation of his masterpiece, Dracula (1897) and later work. Interestingly, however, The Snake’s Pass (in spite of its ominous sounding title and many of Stoker’s later novels and stories) contains no elements of the supernatural and it is his only novel to be set in his native home of Ireland.

There are some interesting parallels between The Snake’s Pass and the later masterpiece, Dracula. Like Jonathan Harker in Dracula, the protagonist of The Snake’s Pass, Arthur Severn, is a traveler abroad and somewhat of an innocent. Arthur, who is the novel’s narrator, admits he is “younger in many ways and more deficient in knowledge of the world in all ways than other young men of my age.” Upon the death of his aunt, Arthur is “left heir to all her property” and “resolved to spend at least a few months in travel.” During his travels he is caught on a typical Bulwer-Lytton dark and stormy night, much like Jonathan Harker as he travels to the castle of Count Dracula to conduct a real estate deal with the Count. It is while taking refuge from the storm that Arthur learns many local legends just as Harker learns of the belief of the nosferatu, the undead, from the residents.

Stoker is in his glory as a story-teller with local natives recounting tales of the area. Most of the characters at “Mrs. Kelligan’s hospitable shelter,” a pub, speak with Irish dialect, but readers will be surprised by how quickly their eyes/ears become accustomed to the characters’ speech. Chief among the legends is that of having to do with lost treasure. One story has to do with a giant snake, the King of Snakes, a “mighty important intirely. He was more nor tin times as big as any shnake as any man’s eyes had iver saw; an’ he had a goolden crown on to the top of his head, wid a big jool in it that tuk the colour iv the light, whether that same was from the sun or the moon.” The tale of the snake doing battle with St. Patrick who orders all of the snakes in Ireland west and into the sea is fabulously entertaining and intriguingly, a giant snake is featured in Stoker’s last novel: The Garden of Evil aka The Lair of the White Worm (1911). Before his encounter with St. Patrick, the King of Snakes also demands the annual sacrifice of a baby—much like the Count providing local babies as fodder for his vampire brides. The King of Snakes escapes the Saint’s demands by hiding his jeweled crown, draining the lake in which he resides, and disappearing, “dhrivin’ through the rock and makin’ the clift that they call the Shleenanaher—an’ that’s Irish for the Shnake’s Pass—until this day.” A second story involves a treasure chest lost “in the Frinch invasion that didn’t come off”—a heavy chest “full up to the led wid goolden money an’ paper money.” The chest allegedly is hidden on a hill, “Knockcalltore—an’ that’s Irish for ‘the Hill of the Lost Gold.’” The bog in the area of the two lost treasures is known to keep “shiftin’ till this day” and Arthur is “determined to visit it” before he leaves the area.

Of more flesh and blood than the legends of the area is “the Gombeen Man,” also known as “Black Murdock.” Murdock is a “sort of usurer,” ruthless in his money-lending practices and certainly the villain in the piece—a living version of Count Dracula who heartlessly preys upon the locals and is quick to fool them and suck them dry by seizing their land when they do not pay back their loans on time. Murdock is said to be held by the Hill of local legend and where he owns some property, not through any supernatural means but because “he doesn’t like to leave it because he hopes to find a treasure that is said to be buried in it.”

Although treasure and legend make up some of the most sensational aspects of The Snake’s Pass, at the heart of the novel is a romance between Arthur Severn and Nora Joyce. Complicating matters, Arthur is neither aware for quite some time of Nora’s actual identity nor of the fact that an old school mate and friend, Dick Sutherland, is also in love with the girl. Nora is the daughter of one of Murdock’s victims, Phelim Joyce. Joyce foolishly borrows money from Murdock and when a string of unfortunate incidents prevents Joyce from repaying the loan on time, Murdock puts into effect their agreement: a trade of Joyce’s “almost… ideal” farm “for this part of the world; it has good soil, water, shelter, trees, everything that makes a farm pretty and comfortable, as well as being good for farming purposes” in exchange for “a piece of land as irregular in shape as the other is compact; without shelter, and taken up” with the bog “and the utter waste and chaos which, when it shifted in former times, it left behind.” Which leads readers to the most curious, but equally important character in the novel: the bog itself.

Referred to as “a carpet of death,” the bog is “more treacherous” than a quagmire or quicksand” with a “film or skin of vegetation of a very low kind” on the surface “mixed with the mould of decayed vegetable fibre and grit and rubbish of all kinds which have somehow got mixed into it, floating on a sea of ooze and slime.” Capable of bearing weight in some spots and not in others, a misstep while upon the bog means certain death, where one’s body would “ultimately waste away, and the bones would become incorporated with the existing vegetation somewhere about the roots, or would lie among the slime at the bottom.” Murdock has Sutherland searching the bog by dragging magnets across its surface “to ascertain, if possible, if there was any iron hidden in the ground”—such as an iron chest—while Sutherland, with Arthur Severn’s assistance, is also engineering the draining of the bog in another area. Stoker quite brilliantly makes the bog in The Snake’s Pass every bit as intriguing and important as the moor in a later work by a fellow writer and friend of Stoker’s—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his famous The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901).

It may or may not be a stretch to state that the characters of The Snake’s Pass are as held by the land as is Count Dracula who, when he leaves his home of Transylvania, must do so taking with him samples of native soil in crates in which he must sleep during the day.

Stoker carries off the romance aspects of his novel strikingly well. With the exception of Murdock and a few of his cronies, Stoker’s Irish characters are all men and women of honor and integrity. Only brief passages approach a level of melodrama typical of novels of the period, generally in dialogue between the two lovers. Stoker infuses the two’s difference in class and background nicely into the relationship so that it and their attempt to shrink the cultural gap between them comes across as a reflection of the admirable quality of the two persons’ makeup and their love for each other rather than a stereotypical narrative device.

Murdock is, of course, the un-ignited gun powder with a short fuse in the story whom Stoker uses to force the story forward at a fine narrative clip and who also reflects some of the Gothic-like aspects of the novel. Murdock proves to be a master of treachery driven by greed and selfishness and totally indifferent to the fate of others he would use (again, the parallel between him and Count Dracula is inescapable). His megalomania knows no bounds, and when there is “villainy afloat,” Murdock is always behind it. Murdock’s determination to possess Norah (like Dracula’s obsession with Lucy and Mina) puts her in the typical damsel in distress scenario of a Gothic novel with a powerful corrupt man lusting after an innocent. Stoker, however, provides readers with a fine twist on this theme toward the climactic events of the novel set upon the bog during a terrific storm in which Norah proves to be a strong and resourceful life-saving character.

Other aspects of the Gothic novel can be found in The Snake’s Pass. Along with heroic figures fighting evil and attempting to deal with nature’s unharnessed power, the Irish countryside which Stoker includes vivid passages of, sometimes idealizing it, also includes a wealth of mystery and secrets, decay, and otherworldly, ancient caves decorated with ancient writing (an equally treacherous site is a memorable part of Stoker’s The Lair of the White Worm). Dreams, often included in the Gothic tradition of literature (and certainly in Dracula), also play a role in The Snake’s Pass, especially for Arthur Severn. Stoker deftly uses Arthur’s dreams to reflect the character’s troubled state of mind, to create an atmosphere of gloom and despair, and to hint at possibilities (or impossibilities) in future events.

Unlike in some of Stoker’s later work, he doesn’t get bogged down (no pun intended) in too much distant historic detail in an attempt to lend historical accuracy or relevance to his story’s events. He does, however, include a lesser but reoccurring character, Andy Sullivan, a local cart driver, who like the gatekeeper in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, provides more than a little comic relief. More importantly, Andy reflects the provincial Irish philosopher—unschooled but wise, he carries within him the heart of Ireland itself although his comic appearances, always affected by heavy Irish idiom, at times threaten to slow down the narrative.

Occasionally, readers can tell when a writer is simply having a good time telling their story and such appears to be the case of Stoker and The Snake’s Pass. Stoker’s fondness for his Irish compatriots and the unique countryside which he inevitably describes in detail shines throughout the novel as do the author’s recounting of Irish legends and occasional mention (usually by Andy Sullivan) of Irish “gnomes, fairies, pixies, leprechauns, and all genii, species and varieties of the same.” Stoker’s version of the encounter between St. Patrick and the King of Snakes reads much like one of Oscar Wilde’s delightful animal fables. There is no questioning, however, Stoker’s ability to writing convincing, absorbing narrative as the last portions of The Snake’s Pass bring together all of Stoker’s plot lines in a terrific dual between man and nature on Knocknacar during an incredibly vivid, memorable storm. Readers are not likely to be surprised by the novel’s conclusion, but are likely to find The Snake’s Pass both entertaining and for those interested in Stoker’s other work, insightful into the creative mind of an intriguing writer. The Valancourt Books edition follows the original 1890 text.
