This book prints the most important primary sources about the Roman army and its activities--inscriptions, papyri, excerpts from Vegetius--with helpful commentary and context. Fascinating in its concrete detail, this is the perfect antidote to the overly schematized generalizations about the army that one finds in more popular accounts.

An excellent way to supplement the standard book on the Roman army by Wilkes, Campbell's reference book makes available at reasonable costs some primary information about the army. Here we have the political and legal views along side those of the commander and common soldier. A great resource for graduates and undergraduates.

The practice of wood-turning is an art relative to which there is little published, and there is, in consequence, little chance for arriving at conclusions as to the best method for performing any given operation; so there is a wide diversity in the methods by which different operators arrive at the same results. Some use one tool almost exclusively, while others use a large variety of tools.

The following exercises are designed to give the operator command of the more commonly used tools, using each for the operations for which it is especially fitted.

The first four exercises are of special importance, and the operator is urged to continue the practice of them until he can perform them easily and safely; the operations involved in the third exercise, when mastered, will be found to give special confidence.

As the exercises have been arranged to give in the most direct manner, and without repetition, the typical operations of the wood-turner, some learners may desire to add further practice in some or all of them, and, for the benefit of such, further exercises, involving similar operations, have been added in the form of an appendix. These have drawings, and, where necessary, additional instructions. The operator is urged, however, to perform the regular exercise before attempting the added one.

Fabrizio Boco

Fabrizio Boco was born in Italy in 1964. He started with electronics when he was a teen and with programming in 1980. In 1992, he received his degree in electronics engineering. Currently, he is a freelance IT manager and architect and has more than 20 years of experience in consulting for private and public companies in Italy. Even when he occupied executive positions, he worked on the design and implementation of IT projects (mostly on enterprise applications, data warehousing, and business intelligence). He has been an iOS developer since 2009, and he has designed and developed Arduino Manager, which is an iOS, Mac OS X, and Android application that can be used to control Arduino (and Arduino-compatible) boards through a powerful and easy-to-use interface, that is based on more than 20 specialized widgets (a switch, knob, display, and gauge, among others). Fabrizio believes that his engineering skills are hardcoded within his DNA; the studies and experiences only completed them.

Amazing & Family Fun!

I have 2 Raspberry Pi 2 units and soon a bare-bones mini pc that I use for programming projects. I've just started to notice the Arduino and with the iOS integration, I figured it would be a good idea to grab a book to help me get some projects under my belt. It amazes me, how all of the technology has grown so fast and has become even smaller, yet we still have moderately sized computers. I feel like these systems draw way less power and cost per year is insanely low. The projects are fairly inexpensive and can be done with a family member or fellow geeky friend, nothing say's I love you like a rocket launcher with a big red button on the iPhone that say's LAUNCH! For this very reason I give the book a 5/5 for fully functional projects, offering more than 2, and for keeping everything neatly structured.

I utilize the Packt Lib subscription service so I can get multiple books at a lower cost, but some of these books need to have reviews on Amazon so people can be aware of the quality, only reason I take the time to post it here.

Learned a lot!

Do you already have some experience to Arduino or iOS App programming and problems to integrate both systems?
Then this should be a good fit for you. Realizing really cool Applications developing good looking user interfaces will make the people around you wonder, how you did this that quick.
I already had quite some experience for Arduino only projects. But this book opened new doors to me. The first time I created IOS Apps. In Beginning it took some time getting into it, but it was most definitely worth the efforts.
Believe me the last project using iBeacon is a fantastic one.

Hello this is an useful and reliable book helps to learn every thing and to be ready to start using arduino with this system iOS

This book has different projects that teaches how to control and monitor using different way of communications devices connected to arduino from a phone with an operating system iOS, I haven't read a book like this, it has real projects and I learned how to apply these practices in real projects with this tecnology.

The book is divided in different parts from the basics to andvanced knowledge. It explains all the projects the code for arduino and the interface made in Xcode and iBeacons.

The most important thing That I want to recommend is that this book is an important book because I have learned how to communicate between Arduino and iOS with real examples applying to the real World.

One important and interesting thing is that teaches how to interface arduino with a phone with iOS. very good book

androidlike disgust for Hickman lines

The Boy in the Mirror by Tom Preston is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in one go with a significant amount of rapt on an August morning. Because I was offered and agreed to read this book some months ago, I had filed it in my memory and my Kindle library as "Non-fiction, short, cancer."

Prior to my meeting him, my boyfriend Gabe had went through ICE treatment, multiple rounds of chemo, and two stem cell transplants to treat Hodgkins' lymphoma. This book provided a British-made, somewhat lonelier, but no less grievous window onto what he had went through before the mild, maintenance-based chemo that I would witness. A lot of the data translates effectively into what he's remembered out loud (preference for tuna, oralwash, hatred for afterhours hospital noise, androidlike disgust for Hickman lines, guilt at not being 'there' when friends and family would visit) and what I've seen (a grey cloud passing over a friend or family member's face when Gabe would be confounded by a cancer-related memory, looking at photos taken during treatment, loose camraderie with other people in remission and treatment). Other than that, the first-person tone gives a feeling of hand-grasping, shoulder-throttling confrontation.

Thank you Netgalley, Inpress Books, Valley Press and Tom Preston for letting me review this book for free for an honest review.

Right in the beginning I was ready to put the book down and walk away but I am so glad that I didn't. I had a hard time figuring out where this book was going to go and why there wasn't more about the main character. It wasn't like any book I have ever read before. Instead of having a book about a man with cancer it was pretty much about cancer. What I mean about that is instead of him describing his age, who he is, what he studied in school, what he felt about things going on in his life it was more of what the cancer was doing to him from how he found out, to the medications that he was bombarded with, what they did to him and how the physical reaction were because of the chemo and other medications. I am so glad that at the end we were able to find out after his 4 month horrible ordeal he is now in remission.

A hard read, but well worth it

I have had family and friends battle cancer. Some have survived, others haven't. This wasn't an easy book to read. But it is one of the most honest, compelling, heartwarming and heartbreaking books I have ever read.

It isn't a long book, so I read it in one sitting. The language takes a bit of getting used to as it is written as if it's you who is experiencing the tests, injections, sickness which comes with going through chemotherapy.

The author hasn't sugar coated anything. He is telling it as it is, giving you the good, bad and the very ugly sides of this awful disease and the treatment needed to help sufferers have a fighting chance. It's not nice, it is technical at times, and you feel as if you are right there with him. But it is something I will forever be glad I read.

The scope of the work is such as to present: first, the use of household mechanical appliances; second, the principles involved and the mechanism employed. It is not exhaustive, neither does it touch many of the secondary topics that might be discussed in connection with the various subjects. It does, however, describe at least one representative piece of each type of household apparatus that is used in good practice.

The mechanism used in the equipment of a modern dwelling is worthy of greater attention, as a course of study, than it has been heretofore accorded. The fact that any house, rural or urban, may be provided with all domestic conveniences included in: furnace heating, mechanical temperature regulation, lighting facilities, water supply, sewage disposal and other appliances, indicates the general use of domestic machinery in great variety. To comprehend the application and adaptability of this mechanism requires a knowledge of its general plan of construction and principles of operation.

Heating systems in great variety utilize steam, hot water, or hot air as the vehicle of transfer of heat from the furnace, throughout the house. Each of these is made in the form of special heating plants that may be adapted, in some special advantage to the various conditions of use. A knowledge of their working principles and general mechanical arrangement furnishes a fund of information that is of every day application.

The systems available for household water distribution take advantage of natural laws, which aided by suitable mechanical devices and conveniently arranged systems of pipes, provide water-supply plants to satisfy any condition of service.

An excellent edition of a classic book

This is an excellent edition of Benson's classic work. Unlike many other recent editions of Benson's books (Come Rack Come Rope, Oddsfish, etc.), this edition has not been abridged.
It is the story of the future world from a turn of the century vantage point. Protestantism has fizzled, the Mason's have triumphed, and Catholicism is on the defensive. The world has divided into three parties, and a silver tongued savior comes to save the day. Benson believed that armageddon would more likely result from smooth talking and twisted ideologies than from naked evil.
Although Benson may have over estimated the Masons and underestimated Protestants, he makes many surprisingly accurate predictions. The rhetoric used by the Bolshevists in Russia, the Nazi's in Germany, and the parties of the Spanish civil war was foreseen by Benson. The great white line Hitler painted around the Vatican and the Atomic bomb were also not beyond Benson's imagination.
Unfortunately, only a small audience will appreciate this book, but that audience should include all Catholics who take ideas and the modern threat seriously. This book helps explain the beauty of pre-Vatican II ceremonies without siding against the changes of Vatican II.

The Last of All

R.H. Benson wrote two mystical visions of the future. _The Dawn of All_ is an extremely romantic and improbable 1911 parable of a 1971 world mostly Catholic and at peace, ready for the Second Coming. _The Lord of the World_ came first, in 1907, and was a darker vision. A world of flying craft, major scientific advances, and comfort has become a place of materialist despair. Euthanasia is routine, for the desperately ill and the terminally bored. Oliver and Mabel Brand, a rising young couple, are the golden ones -- Oliver becomes a major political figure, but Mabel chooses the cool despairing end of legal euthanasia. Father Percy Franklin is one of the last Catholic priests in a world hostile to freedom, church, university, and history. Eventually elected the last Pope, he is restricted to the dusty forgotten village of Nazareth. Julian Felsenburgh is a charismatic American adventurer who means to and does become Lord of the World, anti-Christ. Details are less important than the very modern mood. Believing in progress as the only good, people are swept into any movement that promises it. The past is ruthlessly exterminated. The quest for one world government that begins with Esperanto ends with one world dictatorship.

Things Rushing to Their End

"A Century before Left Behind there was Lord of the World," reads the cover blurb in the striking Wildside Press edition. But while both books deal with end times, that's where the similarities end. In Benson's vision, Catholics are the last remaining Christians. The Left Behind books, named for a line in Larry Norman's song, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready," on the other hand, follow the idea of the rapture popularized in Hal Lindsey's bestselling book, The Late Great Planet Earth.

I ordered this book from Amazon after reading Gwen Watkins' essay in Charles Williams: A Celebration (also available from Amazon) comparing Benson and Williams as writers. Williams being my favorite author, I was very excited to come upon a similarly gifted novelist. Benson wrote Lord of the World in 1907; it takes place in a future about a century later (around now). That's also around the time that Chesterton wrote his novels. Both he and Benson write so colorfully that it's sometimes hard to know what's going on. Whether people were more imaginative then or that was the style at the turn of the century I don't know. But having read GKC helps one read Benson, and vice versa.

Williams is often held to be obscure for his descriptions of supernatural and occultic ritual. Benson's obscurity lies in his pre-Vatican II Catholic vocabulary and bits of the Latin Mass, which will not be familiar to many readers. That aside, this is an absolutely gripping story. Having once started, I couldn't put the book down. Uncannily, in this 1907 novel, Benson prophesied a dark future that became reality, first in Germany and then in the USSR. Writing in the then new genre of science fiction, he envisioned a technologically advanced world nevertheless rushing headlong to destruction. It's amazing how contemporary he sounds as he looks forward in time to our present and his future.

beautifully rendered, and never prolix

This is perhaps the most erudite collection of essays about poetry I've encountered in recent years. It is assiduous, graceful, beautifully rendered, and never prolix; even so, Bond never enervates the essays through oversimplifications and generalizations. Indeed, this is one of the books I consider truly special, as it did more than elucidate the paradoxical limits/universal possibilities of logos, it helped me understand my own work and inspired me to complicate it, to mature.

I have all of the previous Car Talk cds, ...

I have all of the previous Car Talk cds, and they just about all have repeats from other cds. There was only one track on all of the cds in this collection that I had previously heard (an exchange with Daniel Pinkwater), so this was a real treat, and of course, very entertaining!

Tom and Ray are funny.

For those of you who may not know, Car Talk is a call-in radio program where listeners can get tips and advice on a wide variety of automotive repairs, if they're lucky. The hosts of the show are Tom and Ray Magliozzi who spend a good deal of their time wise-cracking about the callers and themselves. They really do know a lot about cars, however, and can often provide some helpful hints or suggestions. Car Talk originated on WBUR in Boston in 1977, and was picked up by NPR ten years later. NPR reports that it is now broadcast on more than 350 radio stations reaching more than 4 million listeners.

As I listen to these programs, I'm always amazed at the automotive knowledge of Tom and Ray. People call in from all over the country and no matter what kind of car or what kind of problem the caller has, Tom and Ray always seem to know exactly what to do. Now, I suppose it's possible that the calls are pre-screened and Tom and Ray can bone up ahead of time, but they sure sound convincing to me. Anyway, that's not really why I listen. Tom and Ray are just plain funny.

Hey listen, Car Talk is a genuinely funny show. And it's not full of the vulgarity that so much of our modern comedy has sunk to. Car Talk airs on NPR so you know it's suitable for the whole family. Check your local listings for air times, and in the meantime, pick up this collection, or one of the many others, from HighBridge Audio.
