About the Author
Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was born in Yorkshire. She was the third of six children and the oldest of the three well-known novelist and poet Brontë sisters. Brontë published several novels; however Jane Eyre remains her most famous literary work.

American novelist Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) is most famous for the novel Little Women, a semi-autobiographical tale, set in Alcott’s childhood home of Concord, Massachusetts. Throughout her lifetime, Alcott published more than 30 books and collections of stories.

Jane Austen (1775–1817) is one of the most celebrated authors of the English language. Her fiction is known for its witty satires on English society. Austen wrote anonymously during her life and wasn't widely recognized as a great English writer until after her death in 1817.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was an English playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden (published in 1911), A Little Princess (published in 1905), and Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885–86). She was born in Cheetham, England and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian author best known for her series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, which was an immediate success. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 500 short stories and poems. She was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Amazingly beautiful gift set

I absolutely love the Word Cloud Classics by Canterbury Classics. Although all of these books are no longer under copyright, and are free digitally in whatever e-book format you prefer, the Word Cloud Classics have obviously been designed with thought and care. This set contains eight books, half of which are written by Jane Austen, of course, and is well worth the price (especially if it's still steeply discounted like it was when I purchased it). The books are housed in a thick, lavender cardboard box and protected by a sturdy plastic covering. Every book has the burnished leather cover, covered in important quotes and motifs from the particular book with a longer quote on the back cover, and each has its own distinctive, colorful flyleaf. What's cool is you also get a bookmark with the titles burnished on one side and every flyleaf pattern on the other.

The one complaint I have is that while the plastic covering is great as a dustcover, it does require you to slip all of the books out to get at one. However, this is a minor inconvenience, and I wholeheartedly recommend this set. You won't find any cheap, photocopies from Word Cloud Classics!

I purchased these for my 12 year old Granddaughter as she "loves" to read and wanted these to keep. They are lovely and she was so appreciative They are beautifully presented yet not over done. Definitely a keepsake. I would recommend them for anyone's library and as a gift for those who appreciate fine things.

I waited over 30 years for a second look

This book was written before the age of thinking that invention could be accompished on paper alone. Hands on experimentation was the order of the day. Real understanding was the result. The world we live in today is a direct result of those who marched to the beat of Alfred Morgans' drummer. Of course, if he published this book today, he would be shot (in California, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusits) for suggesting that "boys" actually go beyond safe video representation of physical science, and try to really build working devices. "Time out" parenting is not compaible with this book.
On the other hand, I first read this book in the late 60's, and built a few of the projects therein. My parents didn't quite understand, but they tolerated my enthusiasm, and my understanding of our world was better off for it. Get this book. Even if you are a boy that happens to be over 50, you will enjoy many hours of adventure and new understanding of things that have been with you from your beginning. I am thrilled to find a reprint after so many years.

I'm an engineer today probably because of this book which I borrowed several times from the library when I was 10 or so.
I never had the equipment to try any of the experiments but they inspired me nonetheless.

I received this book in exchange for a review. This summary and analysis of Daivd Lagercrantz's "The Girl in the Spider's Web" was a great read. This book summarizes what the original book is about, lists and analyzes the book's characters and relationships, and analyzes the book's themes. I found the discussion on artificial intelligence to be particularly interesting. Will there someday be a world where machines are more intelligent than humans? It is possible that ophthalmic changes have been present since the first days of spaceflight, but had been attributed to other causes; this approach to the issue as well as other hypotheses are all presented in full to give a broad foundation of the existing knowledge on the topic. The changes have occurred at various times during a mission with varying degrees of visual degradation. Some cases resolved on return to Earth, but several crewmembers have not regained pre-flight visual acuity, indicating the damage may be permanent. One explanation of the syndrome has been attributed to hyperopic shift due to aging, but onboard analysis techniques, including visual acuity assessments, retinal imagery, and ultrasound examination of the eye, has led to the acceptance of a wider syndrome. In addition to vision changes, studies have reported flattening of the globe, swelling of the optic disc (papilledema), choroidal folds in the retina, swelling of the optic nerve sheath, and visual field defects. It is widely hypothesized that this spectrum of symptoms may be explained by an elevation of intracranial pressure (ICP). Establishing the provenance of this medical problem, monitoring its occurrence and resolving the symptoms for future long term space missions is a key challenge for space medicine. About the Author

Erik Seedhouse is a Norwegian-Canadian suborbital astronaut whose life-long ambition is to work in space. After completing a degree in Sports Science the author joined the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment. During his time in the ‘Para’s’, Erik spent six months in Belize, where he was trained in the art of jungle warfare. Later, he spent several months learning the intricacies of desert warfare in Cyprus. He made 30+ jumps from a C130, performed 200+ helicopter abseils and fired more anti-tank weapons than he cares to remember!

Upon returning to the comparatively mundane world of academia, the author embarked upon a Master’s in Medical Science, supporting his studies by winning prize money in 100 kilometer running races. After placing third in the World 100km Championships in 1992, the author turned to ultra-distance triathlon, winning the World Endurance Triathlon Championships in 1995 and 1996. For good measure, he won the World Double Ironman Championships and the Decatriathlon, an event requiring competitors to swim 38km, cycle 1800km, and run 422km. Non-stop!

Returning to academia, Erik pursued his Ph.D. at the German Space Agency’s Institute for Space Medicine. While studying he won Ultraman Hawai’i and the European Ultraman Championships and completed Race Across America. As the world’s leading ultra-distance triathlete Erik was featured in dozens of magazines and television interviews. In 1997, GQ magazine nominated him as the ‘Fittest Man in the World’.

In 1999, Erik retired from triathlon. In 2005 he worked as an astronaut training consultant for Bigelow Aerospace and wrote ‘Tourists in Space’. He is a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and a member of the Space Medical Association. In 2009, he was one of the final 30 candidates in the Canadian Space Agency’s Astronaut Recruitment Campaign. Erik works as a spaceflight instructor for the American

Astronautics Institute, professional speaker, triathlon coach, author, and Editor-in-Chief for the Handbook of Life Support Systems for Spacecraft. Between 2008 and 2013 he served as director of Canada’s manned centrifuge operations.

In addition to being a suborbital astronaut, triathlete, centrifuge operator, pilot and author, Erik is an avid mountaineer and is pursuing his goal of climbing the Seven Summits. This brief is his eighteenth book. When not writing, he spends as much time as possible in Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i and at his real home in Sandefjord, Norway. Erik and his wife, Doina, are owned by three rambunctious cats – Jasper, Mini-Mach and Lava.

Very readable text on what is one of the most perplexing problems faced by space agencies around the world.

Excellent book, well written summary & analysis of Bum Rap by Paul Levine

I was asked by the author to write my honest review. I haven't read the original book by Paul Levine, but this summary gave me a very good overview of the book. This book shows how to make every kind of pot, pan, still, kettle, teakettle or brewry gadget that you would want to make out of copper. Big and small. Household and industrial.

Although, dealing exclusively with copper, most of the techniques shown can be applied to other common sheet metals.

This book doesn't deal with raising from the whole, as in silversmithing, but with piecing something together, and using dovetail joints along with soldering to make a whole.

Lots of woodcut illustrations and concise text. There is some obscure and obsolete terminology; such as 'spelter'. Do you know what that is?

Spinning, dies, power presses and such are not delt with in this book. Neither are the common sheet metal gadgets and tools, such as slip rolls, brakes, shears, roll crimps, and such. Hand hammering, stakes, charcoal firepots; that is what you will find in here. This is like blacksmithing for copper.

If you are interested in working with copper sheet, or brass,I have not seen another book out there as good as this one. Especially if you want to make utilitarian objects. The book is packed with information.

If you are interested in artistic copper forming you will still find the basic techniques in here as to how to work the copper. But there isn't much in the way of artistic design, like how to make a copper rooster weather vane.

Deserves much consideration

This book I believe deserves much praise. The Astragal Press have here reprinted a book written in 1893 which highlights skills that in my part of the world have essentially disappeared. With the technological progress that has sweep across the western world since this book was written you would I suspect have to travel to India, Iran or maybe Eygpt to see this sort of hand skill in use today.
In the authors day copper was the metal of choice for making the Glue Pots and Tea kettles, the Stock Pots, Frying Pans, Tallow Coppers and Brewing Coppers to name just a small aray of items listed in this book. Today the vast bulk of these would be manufactured from either Stainless Steel or may Aluminium.
So the author desribes with words and some outstanding drawings how these items could have been constructed during this period. Pattern Development of some of the items is also covered. The universal subjects of Soldering and Brazing do get good coverage as does the subject of Tinning a copper to be used for cooking purposes. He has included formula for working out some of the blanks required to start from and some good descriptions of the hand tools and stakes etc. to form the work with and on.
A previous reviewer has said that this book is mainly a historical text and of little practical worth today. This is valid only up to a point. It is my belief that this book does have a practical worth and anyone who is looking at this book will be looking precisely for what this book delivers on. That is that this book is about crafting and the art of working metal. The skill to plastically deform a metal to a desired shape is very well covered here and I think that there is a movement, even if a small one, to relearn some of the skills lost in the last few decades with the march of technology. I work in a sheetmetal fabrication shop and no one has these skills anymore and some will say "so what!". But when a job comes in with compounding curved surfaces it is to books from this generation that we must return.
The book itself has been well manufactured though I would have perferred a hard cover. Both the Table of Contents and the Index are clear and concise.
I therefore give this book 5 stars and believe that if you want to do some serious metal working in your job or at home as a hobby then this book will serve you very well.

Not a DIY guide

This is a fascinating insight into the climate in which coppersmiths worked in the 19th Century, and the techniques they used. It is of limited utility in the 21st Century for somebody wanting tips on repairing domestic copperware.

As collectors of old kitchenware, we have found the book useful in helping to assess the age and quality of pieces we come across by better understanding makers' techniques.

In short, a fascinating addition to the bookshelf, but not a DIY guide.

SAM CITRON was a movie editor, before he turned to comic book art. He was one of the artists drawing 'Superman', starting in issue 34 of 23 July 1943. Citron additionally drew the 'Lois Lane' feature in 1945-46 and left 'Superman' in 1946. He went on to draw 'Big Town' and other crime comics for National/DC. Citron furthermore did 'V-Agents' for Fox Comics and 'Lash Larue' for Fawcett. Citron was mainly illustrating for romance titles issued by Timely/Atlas, Quality, St. John and Ziff-Davis throughout the 1950s. He illustrated Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe' for the legendary Classics Illustrated series by Gilberton Publishing. In the 1960s, he contributed to Warren's horror magazines Eerie and Creepy, as well as Western Publishing's 'The Twilight Zone' and 'Believe it or Not'.

Excerpt from Rules and Practice for Adjusting Watches

In the early days of horology the apprentice was taught the art of making a complete watch.

Production was slow, very few duplicate watches were constructed, and it was necessary that extra material be made individually by hand in the same way that the original part was produced. As time passed the value of the repairer was indicated by his ability to make new parts and to replace them so that the watch would again be in running condition. This was the prevailing situation for many years and the repairer was judged according to his skill in making and finishing the various parts.

A similar method of judging ability is still in force among some employers, although the development of the industry into machine and specialized work has made many changes in regard to the most important duties of the repairer.

It is no longer necessary for him to know how to make a complete watch and only on occasional instances is it necessary for him to make a part. Genuine material for modern watches is supplied by the manufacturer at less expense than it can be produced by the individual and in this particular branch of the work the repairers requirements have been very considerably curtailed.

A more exacting and a higher standard of timekeeping has developed, however, and in this field the requirements of the watchmaker have increased to the extent that it is no longer sufficient to merely restore a good watch to running condition. It must keep time. This development has grown gradually and surely and the past twenty-five years may be assumed as the period of greatest advance.

It has been made possible by scientific and practical refinements which permit the adjustment of watches so that they will keep time within closely defined allowances under varying conditions.
