The entire book has been completely rewritten and enlarged. Much new illustrative material has been added. The number of chapters has been increased from ten to sixteen. Complete chapters are now given on "Chassis and Running Gear," "Clutches and Transmissions," Rear Axles and Differentials," while entirely new chapters on "Principles of Electricity and Magnetism," "The Automobile Storage Battery," and "Wheels, Rims and Tires," have been added.

No attempt has been made to cover all makes and models of cars and apparatus, but the purpose of offering instruction on the fundamental principles of automobile design, construction, and operation has been adhered to as far as possible.

Mr. Earl L. Consoliver, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has acted as co-author, taking the place of Mr. George W. Hobbs.

"As life nears its end with me, I find myself meditating more and more upon the mystery of its nature and origin, yet without the least hope that I can find out the ways of the Eternal in this or in any other world. In these studies I fancy I am about as far from mastering the mystery as the ant which I saw this morning industriously exploring a small section of the garden walk is from getting a clear idea of the geography of the North American Continent. But the ant was occupied and was apparently happy, and she must have learned something about a small fraction of that part of the earth's surface.'' ''My imagination and ingrained humanism are appealed to by the facts and methods of natural history. I find something akin to poetry and religion (using the latter word in its non-mythological sense, as indicating the sum of mystery and reverence we feel in the presence of the great facts of life an death) in the shows of day and night, and in my excursions to fields and woods. The love of nature is a different thing from the love of science, though the two may go together. To the rigid man of science this is frank mysticism; but without a sense of the unknown and unknowable, life is flat and barren. Without the emotion of the beautiful, the sublime, the mysterious, there is no art, no religion, and no literature. How to get from the clod underfoot to the brain and consciousness of man without invoking something outside of, and superior to, natural laws, is the question. For my own part I content myself with the thought of some unknown and doubtless unknowable tendency or power in the elements themselves - a kind of universal mind pervading living matter and the reason of its living, through which the whole drama of evolution is brought about."

Thought provoking

This is a little hard to read, but it will make you think about life and it's many mysteries. Though I'm not sure I agree with all of his thoughts. However, if we had to agree with everything we read, we would probably never learn anything new or never read anything.

The Breath of Life

I am a great devotee of John Burroughs, one of the early naturalist writers. Most of his book concern his observations as he traveled around New England. Things were very different in the late nineteenth century. This book is very different. In this he attempts to.explain the difference between the living and non-living. ( not living and dead). It is not easy to read and understand on the first reading. Some of his ideas look a little strange after over 100 years, but are very worth reading and digesting.them.

And I am doing it still. For authors (and their vicissitudes) are many and persistent, and new ways of regarding them open unceasingly, like new dawns.

About the Author
Otto Heller was born in 1863 in the province of Saxony, Germany. After initial aspirations to be an actor, Heller attended the University of Prague, followed by the universities of Munich, Vienna, and Berlin. He came to the United States in 1883 as a tutor and secured the post of instructor in Greek at LaSalle College in Philadelphia in 1887. After receiving his doctor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1890, he taught briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a professor of German language and literature at Washington University in 1892. In 1914, Heller was made professor of modern European literature in addition to his original professorship, and in 1923 he became the first dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, a post he held until he became dean emeritus in 1937. Heller was married to Jean S. Blair Heller. He was an active and well respected critic of literature as well as being a writer himself. His publications include “Henrik Ibsen, Play and Problems,” “Studies in Modern Literature,” “Prophets of Dissent,” and many others. Otto Heller died July 29, 1941.

This is a first class introduction to the thought of Maeterlinck, Strindberg, Nietzsche and Tolstoy. They were indeed prophets of dissent. I would recommend this book.

Affordable Paperback

I never forgot this book after I lost my original copy in a move. It wasn't until this new paperback edition came out that I could justify buying another copy. The cover is new, but the material inside remains the same. The images and text are of very good quality. Allan Girdler is a great storyteller! I highly recommend this book.

Allen Girdler covers it all in this book. It has a lot of technical information as well as the history and background of flattrack racing. Lots of black and white photos. This is a must have if you are a fan of Harley Davidson racing and flattrack racing in general.

Good Historical Overview

A good historical overview of Harley Davidson in competition. If you want more technical detail, you would be advised to read Girdler's book dedicated to the XR 750. The black and white images are poor quality - but the book is priced accordingly. In all, an informative book.

This is exactly what I was looking for. This book gives instructions for making a wide variety of beautiful doors. It covers several types of doors, and gives a number of examples of each type. It illustrates each door with a photograph and a scale drawing. Step-by-step instructions are not always given, but there is enough detail that a non-expert can understand how to build the door. The instructions and illustrations are clear. There are some nice color photographs, too. It also covers door hardware and how to hang a door.

Great book, but here's a big heads up

If you want to get inspired, and learn the secrets of doormaking, this is a wonderful book. But here's either a warning or a tip, depending on how you care to look at things. This book is exactly the same, I mean exactly the same as John Birchard's "Doormaking Patterns & Ideas", which you can currently buy used for less than $1. How did I find this out? By unknowingly buying both books and discoverying, to my disappointment, that they are the same book, by the same publisher, with all the same text and pictures, but a different cover and title. Save yourself some money and buy the cheap one. Don't buy both!

Good book on Doors

Finding a book about design and construction of doors is hard. Hunting around I found few books...and even fewer of those were even in print.

This book provides the basics of door design and construction. It's not a reference guide but it does provide a great deal of data on the different types of doors and how to build them. It's NOT a step-by-step guide or a book for dummies but it does provide a wealth of information.

While it is true that there have been many good books published regarding the subject of valves and valve gears, it is, however, a regrettable fact that there is not a book on the market today treating the modem types from a strictly practical standpoint.

In attempting to supply this deficiency, we have assumed no knowledge on the part of the reader regarding the subject, and, as a result, have devoted considerable space to elementary, or fundamental principles, so as to enable the apprentice or student to travel the road from early to modem practice with ease. Naturally, some of this information cannot be expected to be of much interest to the experienced man, but the author believes that a statement of the general principles, so compact in form and simple in arrangement that all herein contained can be thoroughly mastered, and become a part of the mental stock of the reader, will be interesting and profitable. In fact, the work is presented with no journalistic pretensions, but special care has been take to use plain, common sense language, so that it may be understood by anyone who can read the English language.

The name of this review is called "Haddocks' Eyes"

I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).
My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.
Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.
This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

The Looking Glass Shows Hidden Humor

I always enjoyed the twisted logic and unique sence of humor that I found in Lewis Carroll's Alice tales, the only problem I encountered was that some of the jokes required information that was no longer common knoledge. For example: when Alice continually misquoted the old English nursery rhymes I found myself wondering what the actual versions were, information that every child in Victorian England could have easily told me but that has since been lost to obscurity. After reading through this book I found the answers to all my original questions as well as many that I never considered asking. At first I thought that the commentary would strip the original work of its character and reduce it to a lifeless shadow. I found that the commentary did exactly the opposite, in a surreal way it made the book even more entertaining to read. The incredible detail of the commentary and the wide range of topics covered made the comments themselves seem part of the insane illogic that pervades the realms of wonderland and looking glass house. This does not mean that the coments themselves are insane or illogical, on the contrary they are all intresting and many offer new insights into the books, what makes the commentary so entertaining is how the story of "exactly 7 and one half" Alice is juxtaposed with comments on how the structure of the plot relates to physic and Robert Oppenheimer. Altogether I found the Annotated Alice to be a wonderful read and a gorgeous book which I recomend to anyone who enjoyed the original tales.

Master of Nonsense

The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.
Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.
Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.
This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.
On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

To-day, too, there is a great demand in the profession for books on practical subjects, as it is only in this manner that the young man is able to profit from the experience of his older brother.

It is a singular fact that nearly every man feels that he is competent to carry on a job of earth or rock excavation, yet there is nothing more difficult than to do such work economically. Man since prehistoric times has been digging into mother earth, yet there is always something to learn regarding excavation work. The last word will never be said on the subject. In this treatise only one class of excavation is touched upon, namely, dredging.

If one needs an excuse for offering to the profession this book, it is found in the vast importance of dredging in our commercial life. Not only are there millions upon millions of dollars invested in dredging plants and outfits, but it has only been possible to construct and use vessels of great tonnage, owing to the wonderful achievements of the dredge designers and the engineers and contractors engaged in operating such machines.

Then, too, great canals are constructed with the aid of dredges, large areas of swamp lands are reclaimed for the use of man with such machines, and precious metals are recovered from streams or river bottoms with their aid.

This treatise is written with a view of presenting the subject in a concise and logical manner, so that it may be found useful both to the man of experience and to the beginner or student. Should it so prove the author will feel that his labor has not been in vain.

Some references are of nothing more than historic interest; however, at the time of going to press, no engine is known to the author to which reference has not been made.

The widely distributed sources of such information are usually inaccessible to the average engineer owing to their international derivation, being in many cases unknown; and when known, extremely cumbersome for reference purposes. The majority of airplane engines have been described in various aeronautical works and periodicals, but often as a basis for a discussion on design. This has been purposely avoided in this work since the subject will be very thoroughly treated in subsequent volumes.

Much repetition of experiment on identical types or details occurs through lack of knowledge in regard to the efforts of other workers on similar lines, and results in a waste of inventive skill which might otherwise be turned to more constructive ends. This work will be justified if it in any way should direct engine development along useful lines, and assist in avoiding methods that have long since proved unsound.

The author cannot, of course, be held responsible in all cases for the reliability of the sources of the information used, and it is inevitable that some types, particularly those experimented with more or less privately, have been left unmentioned.

A very interesting book!

This is a very good reprint of a book from 1921. It is well illustrated and contains information on many aircraft engines I have never read about anywhere else. I'm happy this title has been reprinted, as an original edition would be expensive. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in vintage aviation.
