Excerpt from Fire Prevention and Fire Extinction

The appearance at the beginning of last year, in the Annual Report of the Institution of Civil Engineers for 1861 and 1862, of a short memoir of Mr. Braidwood, suggested the publication of a more extended account of the life of the late head of the London Fire Brigade, combined with his opinions upon the subject of his profession.

These opinions are comprised in a work on "Fire Engines, and the Training of Firemen," published in Edinburgh in 1830; two papers upon cognate subjects read before the Institution of Civil Engineers, two similar papers read before the Society of Arts, and in a variety of reports upon public buildings, warehouses, &c. While regretting the great loss that the public has sustained, in being deprived by Mr. Braidwood's sudden death of a complete record of his long and varied London experience, it has been considered advisable to republish the above materials arranged in a systematic form, omitting only such parts as the Author's more matured experience rendered desirable, but confining the whole to his own words.

Roland Barthes, whose centenary falls in 2015, was a restless, protean thinker. A constant innovator, often as a daring smuggler of ideas from one discipline to another, he first gained an audience with his pithy essays on mass culture and then went on to produce some of the most suggestive and stimulating cultural criticism of the late twentieth century, including Empire of Signs, The Pleasure of the Text, and Camera Lucida. In 1976, this one time structuralist outsider was elected to a chair at France’s preeminent Collège de France, where he chose to style himself as professor of literary semiology until his death in 1980.

The greater part of Barthes’s published writings have been available to a French audience since 2002, but here, translator Chris Turner presents a collection of essays, interviews, prefaces, book reviews, and other journalistic material for the first time in English. Divided into five themed volumes, readers are presented in volume one, ‘A Very Fine Gift’ and Other Writings on Theory, with Barthes’s attempts to frame his lifelong curiosities in theoretical form, from his early musings on the sociology of literature through his high period of structuralism to his later reflections on Derrida.

Essential dictionary for reading or translating Homer

Indispensible Tool for Reading Homer
By Platonistikon
Autenrieth's Homeric Dictionary is an indispensible tool for reading Homer in the original. Because it focuses only on Homeric vocabulary, it is easier to use than standard lexica that include thousands of other words and later, non-Homeric meanings for Homeric words. Illustrations and detailed explanations are supplied for words describing armor and weapons and the like, which is helpful and not offered by most other lexica. Autenrieth is also more convenient than the glossaries found in beginner's texts because it allows the reader to look up words in a separate volume rather than turning to the back of the same book.
The introduction to the text claims that students should be able to read Homer with this dictionary almost twice as fast as they would with a standard lexicon. This may sound somewhat overblown, but in my experience it is true. Anyone reading a considerable amount of Homer would do well to pick up this volume and save themselves some time.
The only unfortunate thing is that this isn't available in hardcover. Why publishers increasingly fail to recognize the value of offering hardbound editions of reference works that are likely to be used often, I just don't understand. Even still, the Homeric Dictionary is worth owning if you plan to spend any serious time with Homer in Greek.

This is good but Cunliffe is the last word.
By Seoigheach
Having used both Autenrieth and Cunliffe, it is easy for me to say that Cunliffe is better. Both books are excellent as far as they go and can be used to interpret the Homeric lexicon. The minor advantages of Autenrieth--and they really are minor--are (1) it is slightly more compact, if space is a premium; (2) it has occasional, schematized illustrations; and (3) by not listing some of the inflected forms it forces you to work harder to reconstruct the dictionary entries. The advantages of Cunliffe are (1) its comprehensiveness in including many of the derived or inflected forms, relieving the relative newcomer of time-consuming recontruction of dictionary forms; and (2) its large, almost overcapacious, citations to many entries: it is sometimes entertaining just to browse the entries. I own both but after I got Cunliffe I never bothered resorting to Autenrieth.

Hence the three stars. This really is worth five stars in terms of accuracy and in providing you with everything you need. But it is overshadowed by its competitor.

Customs in Common: Studies in Traditional Popular Culture, by E. P. Thompson

Customs in Common is the remarkable sequel to E.P. Thompson’s influential, landmark volume of social history, The Making of the English Working Class. The product of years of research and debate, Customs in Common describes the complex culture from which working class institutions emerged in England—a panoply of traditions and customs that the new working class fought to preserve well into Victorian times.

In a text marked by both empathy and erudition, Thompson investigates the gradual disappearance of a range of cultural customs against the backdrop of the great upheavals of the eighteenth century. As villagers were subjected to a legal system increasingly hostile to custom, they tried both to resist and to preserve tradition, becoming, as Thompson explains, “rebellious, but rebellious in defence of custom.” Although some historians have written of riotous peasants of England and Wales as if they were mainly a problem for magistrates and governments, for Thompson it is the rulers, landowners, and governments who were a problem for the people, whose exuberant culture preceded the formation of working-class institutions and consciousness.

Using a wide range of sources, Thompson shows how careful attention to fragmentary evidence helps to decode the fascinating symbolism of shaming rituals including “rough music,” and practices such as the ritual divorce known as “wife sale.” And in examining the vigorous presence of women in food riots from the sixteenth century onwards, he sheds further light on gender relations of the time.

Essential reading for all those intrigued by English history, Customs in Common has a special relevance today, as traditional economies are being replaced by market economies throughout the world. The rich scholarship and depth of insight in Thompson’s work offer many clues to understanding contemporary changes around the globe.

Great social analysis of XVIIIth century England!
By Alejandro Cheirif
E. P. Thompson was one of the founders of social history. He was part of a group of marxist British historians, among them were Raymond Williams and Eric Hobsbawm. Costums in Common offers a great social analysis of XVIIIth century England. His main thesis is that XVIIIth century England saw sort of a tacit agreement of social behavior and stability between the gentry and the poor. They were both allowed to take certain measures to achieve their aims--the gentry did it via the parliament, and the poor via civil desobedience. Most interestingly, however, was the symbolic struggle, or cultural struggle--what E. P. Thompson calls the theatre and counter-theatre. The theatre meant the social attitudes--the gentry had its wigs, its fancy outfits, and its arrogant attitude, and the poor had its popular culture. This was a way to channel power and discontent through cultural manifestations. All in all, E. P. thompson demonstates how all these tacit agreements and symbolic struggles allowed England to go through the XVIIIth century without going through a revolution (unlike the rest of Europe did or would later), although let's not forget that this was the rural poor and the haute bourgoisie and aristocracy, but the real bourgois were barely emerging. For that we'll have to turn to his other (and lenghtier too) book: The Making of the English Working-Class.

Shakespeare and Psychoanalytic Theory (Shakespeare and Theory), by Carolyn Brown

Although psychoanalytic criticism of Shakespeare is a prominent and prolific field of scholarship, the analytic methods and tools, theories, and critics who apply the theories have not been adequately assessed. This book fills that gap. It surveys the psychoanalytic theorists who have had the most impact on studies of Shakespeare, clearly explaining the fundamental developments and concepts of their theories, providing concise definitions of key terminology, describing the inception and evolution of different schools of psychoanalysis, and discussing the relationship of psychoanalytic theory (especially in Shakespeare) to other critical theories. It chronologically surveys the major critics who have applied psychoanalysis to their readings of Shakespeare, clarifying the theories they are enlisting; charting the inception, evolution, and interaction of their approaches; and highlighting new meanings that have resulted from such readings. It assesses the applicability of psychoanalytic theory to Shakespeare studies and the significance and value of the resulting readings.

Excerpt from Cam Design and Manufacture

Cam movements are among the most useful that the machine designer has at his command, for without them many complicated motions could not be laid out and constructed. When cams are laid out by cut-and-try methods (which is often the case), they are noisy in operation, create a vast amount of friction and are short-lived. On the other hand, if the curves are properly laid out, giving all possible time for the rises, the finished cams can be run at high speeds with very little noise or friction. Under these conditions, cams compare favorably in construction cost and maintenance cost with more complicated mechanical movements used for the same purpose.

When it is considered that a practical knowledge of cam design and manufacture is easily acquired, it may seem strange that the majority of technical works on machine design treat this subject lightly; or at least from only a theoretical point of view. While it can not be claimed that any one person knows the whole subject thoroughly, it is certainly possible to explain some of the methods that are in actual use for laying out and cutting cams. The use of the various methods and appliances that are described is not confined to any one locality, by any means, as these methods and appliances have been found in practically every manufacturing center of the country.

In the description of the various methods, the writer has avoided using complicated mathematical formulas as it is well known that very few men actually engaged in machine design and construction thoroughly understand them.

By Hopper
If you want to make your own cams in the back shed, this book is a good starting point. Not so much about cam timings etc for specific engines but the general principals and how to apply them in the workshop if you want to design and make your own cam grinding machine. Not full of obscure math formulas and CNC voodoo but practical DIY with basic hand tools and lathe. Suits any camaholic from model engineers to car racing tuners.

Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

An Eighth Grader reviews A Tale of Two Cities
By A Customer
This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

It is the best of books, it is the worst of books....
By Newton Ooi
I was first introduced to this book when I was 14 years old in my 8th grade English class. I found it utterly overwhelming; in its cast, its plotlines, its settings, its themes and most of all, in the intricate web the various relationships create. I only understood three things about this book. First, the two cities are London and Paris. Second, France was convulsing itself with the French Revolution while England was undergoing changes that would prepare it to enter the Industrial Revolution. Third, English in Dickens' time did not resemble English at the end of the 20th century, but somehow seemed similar to the English used in Hollywood epic movies from the 1950s and 1960s like Spartacus, Ben-hur, the Ten Commandments, Cleopatra, etc...

Years later, I picked up this book and reread it. I considered this a labor, not of love, but of duty. This book is so famous and used so often in English literature classes that I felt I had to read it again for a deeper understanding. What I got from this book a 2nd time around is a profoundly subtle yet accurate sociological and psychological study of what happens to a society and a community that is built on shaky foundations. Specifically, France was an aristocracy where a tiny minority owned all the land. The rest of society was organized into tiers that varied in their opportunities of becoming landowners. Because of this pyramid structure, most of the people hewed to the social order knowing that yes they get crapped on by those above them, but there's always somebody below them to take advantage of.

Eventually this social Ponzi scheme comes to a screeching halt with the French Revolution. Enough people have had enough that they decide to start over. In the process a lot of people get killed and a lot of property changes hands. So woven into this story of a society's collapse are individual tales of woe, revenge, sacrifice, retribution, love and lust. Some are wrongly imprisoned or executed, while others willingly trade places to free those who have been marked for punishment. Families are torn asunder, and friendships are made and betrayed.

Overall, this book is a classic; though not appropriate for anyone not in their mid-teens yet. Its careful depiction of a society warrants its reading for those interested in 18th century Western history. But it should be read with notes and study guides for its depth and complexity can easily lose the interest and focus of many readers.

A Tale of Two Cities
By mp
The more Dickens I read, the more impressed I become at his skill as a writer. No matter the form, be it short, long, or a monolith like some of his best works, Dickens excels at changing his style of characterization and plot to fit whatever mode he writes in. "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of his shorter novels, and he manages to make the most of out of the allotted space. The compression of the narrative sacrifices Dickens's accustomed character development for plot and overall effect, but what we get is still phenomenal.
"A Tale of Two Cities" begins in 1775, with Mr. Lorry, a respectable London banker, meeting Lucie Manette in Paris, where they recover Lucie's father, a doctor, and mentally enfeebled by an unjust and prolonged imprisonment in the Bastille. This assemblage, on their journey back to England, meets Charles Darnay, an immigrant to England from France who makes frequent trips between London and Paris. Upon their return to England, Darnay finds himself on trial for spying for France and in league with American revolutionaries. His attorney, Stryver, and Stryver's obviously intelligent, if morally corrupt and debauched, assistant, Sydney Carton, manage to get Darnay exonerated of the charges against him. Darnay, a self-exiled former French aristocrat, finds himself compelled to return to France in the wake of the French Revolution, drawing all those around him into a dangerous scene.
Dickens portrays the French Revolution simplistically, but powerfully, as a case of downtrodden peasants exacting a harsh revenge against an uncaring aristocratic, even feudal, system. The Defarge's, a wine merchant and his wife, represent the interests of the lower classes, clouded by hatred after generations of misuse. Darnay, affiliated by birth with the French aristocracy, is torn between sympathy for his native country in its suffering, and his desire to be free of his past.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot, much like the works of Sir Walter Scott, wherein the characters themselves assert less agency, finding themselves forced to deal with the tide of epic events. Richard Maxwell's introduction to this newest Penguin edition does a good job outlining the themes of doubling and literary influence that Dickens works with. One specific influence I discerned in reading "A Tale" that Maxwell doesn't metion is Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France," which if nothing else, gives the feeling that the rampant violence of the early revolution and the later Reign of Terror has brought about an irreversible change in human nature. While Dickens remains cautiously optimistic throughout the novel that France can recover, the tone of the novel speaks to the regression of humanity into a more feral, primal state, rather than advertise any real hope for its enlightened progress.
Despite the supposed dichotomy between England and France in the novel, Dickens seems to suggest throughout that there are no real differences, due to the way that human nature is consistently portrayed. With England in between two revolutions, American and French, Lucie's sensitivity early in the novel to hearing the "echoing" footsteps of unseen multitudes indicates a palpable fear that the "idyllic" or "pastoral" England he tries to portray is not exempt from the social discontent of America or France. In this light, stolid English characters like Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and Jarvis Lorry appear to almost overcompensate in their loyalty to British royalty. In a novel that deals with death, religion, mental illness, I could go on and on for a week, but I won't. One of those novels whose famous first and last lines are fixed in the minds of people who've never even read it, "A Tale of Two Cities" demands to be read and admired.

South Toward Home: Travels in Southern Literature, by Margaret Eby

A literary travelogue into the heart of classic Southern literature.

What is it about the South that has inspired so much of America's greatest literature? And why, when we think of Flannery O'Connor or William Faulkner or Harper Lee, do we think of them not just as writers, but as Southern writers? In South Toward Home, Margaret Eby―herself a Southerner―travels through the South in search of answers to these questions, visiting the hometowns and stomping grounds of some of our most beloved authors. From Mississippi (William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright) to Alabama (Harper Lee, Truman Capote) to Georgia (Flannery O'Connor, Harry Crews) and beyond, Eby looks deeply at the places that these authors lived in and wrote about. South Toward Home reveals how these authors took the people and places they knew best and transmuted them into lasting literature.

Side by side with Eby, we meet the man who feeds the peacocks at Andalusia, the Georgia farm where Flannery O'Connor wrote her most powerful stories; we peek into William Faulkner's liquor cabinet to better understand the man who claimed civilization began with distillation and the "postage stamp of native soil" that inspired him; and we go in search of one of New Orleans's iconic hot dog vendors, a job held by Ignatius J. Reilly in John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. From the library that showed Richard Wright that there was a way out to the courtroom at the heart of To Kill a Mockingbird, Eby grapples with a land fraught with history and mythology, for, as Eudora Welty wrote, "One place understood helps us understand all places better."

Combining biographical detail with expert criticism, Eby delivers a rich and evocative tribute to the literary South.

Review
“Well-informed and lively…. This young author is unafraid to hunt big game…. [Eby] demonstrates apt critical insights and offers biographical tidbits from a thorough reading of the authors’ life stories…. This reviewer would happily read a sequel.” (Howell Raines - New York Times Book Review)

“[A] fascinating paean to the people and places that inspired some of the most revered chroniclers of life below the Mason-Dixon line…. Eby lyrically uncovers a bit of the magic that makes a southern writer southern.” (Josh Steele - Entertainment Weekly)

“[An] engaging journey…. Eby offers something you can’t get on tours.” (Anushah Jiwani - Oxford American)

“As Elif Batuman did for Russian literature in The Possessed and Olivia Laing did for alcoholic writers in The Trip to Echo Spring, so Margaret Eby does for Southern writers in South Toward Home.” (Michael Bourne, The Millions)

“A delightful love letter to the South and…an apt reminder that the South is no literary backwater but a world of letters all its own.” (Publishers Weekly)

“An illuminating journey to the homes, towns, and landscapes that nurtured ten Southern writers…. Eby brings a fine sensibility to her readings…and, in polished prose, offers a fresh look at their lives and literary legacies.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A sweetly personal yet embracingly informative book…. Eby entices us to enjoy their work either for the first time or once again.” (Booklist, Starred review)

“Margaret Eby brings an enviable ease and intelligence to this exploration of ten essential Southern writers and the landscapes from which their books were formed. Her travels should offer you either an excellent introduction to these authors or a bracing reminder of their worth, and indeed, turning these pages, I recalled why I first fell in love with those whose books I know well and was persuaded to reinvestigate those whose books I don't.” (Kevin Brockmeier)

Margaret Eby has written for the New York Times, The New Yorker, the Paris Review Daily, Bookforum, Salon, Slate, and the Los Angeles Times. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she now lives in New York City.

Look Southward for some Answers
By Margie Read
What a splendid review of some of the South's best known writers. As has been pointed out "some of us can read; some of us can even write" and the discussion by Eby of some of these Southern writers is of value to those who want to know more about them and their work. The book should be especially valuable to those who teach. Solid evaluations are made and comments that lead to a better understanding of the works of those writers included. Any teacher of American /Southern Literature should have this book in his or her classroom. No one can come up with a reason why Southerners seem better writers than those from other sections of the United States, but Eby comes as close as we have seen to establishing some of the reasons. Highly recommended. .

A great way to evoke the literature of particular southern places and the writers that described them!
By D. Locicero
Full disclosure: I received this as a Goodreads giveaway, but that in no way affects the review which follows.

What is it about southern writers and southern literature that create a unique literary genre? Answering that question is the purpose of South Toward Home: Travels in Southern Literature by Margaret Eby. (And, yes, the title was inspired by Willie Morris' 1967 memoir, North Toward Home.)

Let me begin by saying that both the Introduction and the Coda are well worth reading - don't be tempted to skip over them! Here are two quotes from the introduction to whet your appetite:

First, "Southern writing at its loftiest is a literature of opposition. It is a rebuff, in equal measure, to those who imagine the region as a place of shoeless yokels, and those who mythologize it as one where sweet-faced, big-haired debutantes in hoop skirts dole out petit fours, mind their manners, and maintain deep roots to their family elders."

And from the following page, "What makes a southern writer a southern writer is not just the circumstances of his or her birth, but a fierce attachment to a particular place, and a commitment to exploring its limits in his or her work."

On a journey following several of those notable southern writers through Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and (New Orleans) Lousiana, Eby fleshes out her ideas about the connections between the writers she has chosen to include and special places in their writing lives. As someone with southern roots, I appreciated her careful crafting of the descriptions that draw the reader into her thesis, and I believe she supports it well. There really do appear to be tangible connections between particular places and these writers' affinities for them. What a well-written and enjoyable book!

My recommendation: Go ahead; read this book -- and delve into the southern soul.

What defines a Southern writer? -- approached through ten Southern authors and visits to their hometowns
By R. M. Peterson
Margaret Eby addresses a matter that has occupied many other literary critics: what defines a Southern writer? Eby's thesis is that "what makes a Southern writer a Southern writer is not just the circumstances of his or her birth but a fierce attachment to a particular place, and a commitment to exploring its limits in his or her work." She illustrates that thesis through traveling to the hometowns of ten famous writers from the Deep South. SOUTH TOWARD HOME adopts a singular and useful approach to the question of what defines a Southern writer, and in Eby's hands it turns out to be an engaging and informative book on the literature of the South.

The ten writers around whom Eby organizes her book are Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Harry Crews, Harper Lee and Truman Capote, John Kennedy Toole, and Barry Hannah and Larry Brown. Visiting their homes takes her to Jackson and Oxford in Mississippi, Milledgeville and Bacon County in Georgia, Monroeville in Alabama, and New Orleans.

The reader learns a lot about Eby's authors, in a relaxed, non-pedantic fashion. I already knew a fair amount about Faulkner and O'Connor, but even with them I gained a richer understanding. I found Eby's discussions of Welty and Toole especially informative. (I finished the book with a resolve to read more of Welty's novels soon, and perhaps re-read "Confederacy of the Dunces", about which I was less than enthusiastic the first time around.)

Eby's prose is ideal for a book of this sort. It is smooth and flowing, never calling attention to itself.

Ultimately, I doubt that SOUTH TOWARD HOME will end the musings about what it is that defines a Southern writer -- though I am certain that Eby, who comes across as even-keeled, is not so presumptuous or arrogant to pretend that her book is the be-all and end-all. (I tend to think that the matter is related to the overwhelming influence of Faulkner on matters literary, and he just happened to hail from the South.) In the course of the book, Eby does offer reflections from other writers on the subject, two of which from Eudora Welty are worth repeating:

* "'Regional,' I think, is a careless term, as well as a condescending one, because what it does is fail to differentiate between the localized raw material of life and its outcome as art. 'Regional' is an outsider's term; it has no meaning for the insider who is doing the writing, because as far as he knows he is simply writing about life."

* "[Southern writers] do not need reminding of what our subject is. It is humankind, and we are all part of it. When we write about people, black or white, in the South or anywhere, if our stories are worth the reading, we are writing about everybody."

Great stories of the guys vs gals and a wonderful throw in on a college students response to a candidate college! My only complaint would be that the tape was too short only about an hour of entertainment, but a great hour!!!And if you need a good mechanic in Boston this tape has the perfect guy for you - really!!

This book should be given out along with driver's licenses
By A Customer
I wish I had this book ten years ago. The best $10 you can spend on your car. You should have this book if you have a new car, if you only drive your parents' car, if you have never owned a car and are about to buy one, or like me, if your car has been trouble-free and is now starting to act up. It's useful, it makes complete sense, and is very funny too. I plowed through it in about two hours. And if you think you don't know anything about cars, wait until you read what some other people have done...

Stick with the Car Advice!
By John P Bernat
I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

This book distills this expertise into important, relevant items you need to know. Buy it and keep it in the car - you'll be glad!

Airspace Closure and Civil Aviation: A Strategic Resource for Airline Managers, by Steven D. Jaffe

The impact to airlines from airspace closure can be as benign as a two minute extension on an arrival pattern, or as catastrophic as a shoot down from a surface-to-air missile, as the tragic loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over the Ukraine in July 2014 demonstrates. Airspace constraints come in a variety of forms, both man-made and physical, but all result in operational inefficiencies that erode the economic vitality of an airline. Understanding the root causes of these airspace restrictions, developing strategies for mitigating their impact, and anticipating future airspace closures, are critical for the efficient and safe operation of any airline. This book uniquely examines the technological, geographic, regulatory, and political aspects of airspace closure, with a focus on how airlines continue to adapt to overcome these challenges, providing readers with a framework for identifying issues and solutions in a systematic manner. Filled with historical references and contemporary anecdotes, this book serves both as a practical guide and strategic resource for airline managers navigating their 21st century. organizations around some of the lingering 20th century obstacles.

Review
'In the wake of the shootdown of MH 17 in 2014, anyone involved in commercial aviation planning and operations should read this important book as a foundation for understanding the causes and consequences of airspace closure. The book does a remarkable job in tying together an enormously diverse set of topics - regulatory, technical, political, commercial, security, geographic - in an eminently readable fashion. The fascinating real-world vignettes that introduce each chapter are themselves worth the price of admission for anyone with an interest in international relations, economic geography, or aviation history.'
