The Decameron, by Giovanni Boccaccio

The Decameron (From the Greek: δέκα - ten & μέρα - day) (Italian: Decameron or Decamerone, subtitled Prince Galehaut (Old Italian: Prencipe Galeotto), is a collection of novellas by the 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–1375). The book is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men sheltering in a secluded villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city. Boccaccio probably conceived the Decameron after the epidemic of 1348, and completed it by 1353. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary value and widespread influence (for example on Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales), it provides a document of life at the time. Written in the vernacular of the Florentine language, it is considered a masterpiece of classical early Italian prose.

Boccaccio's human comedy
By Judge Knott
This fascinating fourteenth-century text is as complex as it is misunderstood. The premise is simple enough: the author creates a fictional set-up where, over ten days, seven female and three male characters who are cooped up in a country estate tell one another a total of 100 stories. The title, "The Decameron," literally means "ten day's work."
But this framing technique of ten narrators is hardly the point. The star of this work are the tales told by these sequestered characters. These 100 stories are chillingly sneaky in how they will mess with your mind. At first the tales will appear shocking, overtly sexual, or even knee-slappingly funny. (Think "Monty Python.") But in fact, like Aesop, the great Italian prose author Boccaccio tucks an ambiguous, gnawing moral into each tale. You will laugh at first, and then the bittersweet truth of each story's lesson will zap you.
The true brillance of "The Decameron" is that it is kaleidoscopic in nature: while all the tales are somewhat similar to one another, each story is truly unique in how it aligns its characters, its structure, its action, and its moral. The basic ingredients are similar in dozens of stories, and yet their outcomes prove to be wholly different. So instead of getting "re-runs," you the reader wind up in a quicksand-like universe where some good-hearted characters are punished, others rewarded, and some scoundrely characters are quashed while other soar.
It is Boccaccio's humorous (yet ultimately grim) portrait of our herky-jerky, you-never-know world, where a person can never be sure of his destiny despite his conduct, that makes this work brilliant. Behind the ribaldry and the chuckles, this late-medieval author proves that our world (sometimes benevolent, sometimes cruel, but always inscrutable) is, indeed, nothing but a human comedy.

Escape to the Fabulous Fourteenth Century
By oh_pete
Giovanni Boccaccio is one of the three supreme literary masters of the Italian Renaissance--sharing those laurels with Dante and Petrarch--and he is also the most accessible. Written in the 1350s, in the wake of the worst part of the Black Plague (which would kill off one-third of Europe's population), THE DECAMERON is a collection of one hundred surprisingly light, hilariously funny and frequently bawdy short stories. In his preface, Boccaccio claims to have intended them to entertain Italian women who spent most of their lives indoors. Seven young Florentine ladies and three young gentlemen sojourn together to a Tuscan villa to escape the contagion-filled city. They pass each of their ten days in the picturesque countryside with long walks, good food and wine, jovial games, and oh yes, telling stories. Each of them is crowned queen or king for a day and gets to choose the order of the telling. This framework combined with the beautifully described rural setting makes the reader, too, feel warm, welcome, and one of the party.
Boccaccio indulges in a popular form of satire against the foul and corrupt members of the fourteenth century clergy--one of the ten actually admits that it's "too easy" to pick on such scoundrels. With humor and the power of shame he attacks both the hypocrisy of the clergy and the hypocrisy toward which the Catholic Church's sexually repressive laws drove people. Here we find a group of nuns fighting over the sexual favors of the convent gardener; there a wily cleric indulges his prurient urges by convincing a foolish woman that he is the Angel Gabriel; still another adulteress cows her angry husband by claiming he is not enough to satisfy her lust--is it fair that she throw the surplus to the dogs? But the prize is taken by the hermit who persuades a young girl that there's only ONE WAY to fight the devil! Quite often one or another of the chaste storytelling party finishes a tale of illicit pleasure on a note of "May we, too, always have our desires fulfilled." THE DECAMERON is not all lust and corruption, of course, there are tales of great bravery and loyalty in the face of high odds. Great sacrifices are made, fortunate coincidences occur, true faith is rewarded.
THE DECAMERON is easy to dip into again and again and feel rewarded every time. It is impossible to read these wonderful stories without thinking that Boccaccio was enjoying himself inordinately as he wrote them. However he may revel in the permissiveness brought on by the terror of the Plague, much more importantly does he praise life and love and passion as precious and worth grabbing. Boccaccio's generation had certainly seen enough of pain and suffering and death, after all--we should begrudge them nothing.
One of the world's finest literary treasures, THE DECAMERON belongs on the shelf of everyone who loves great storytelling.

What a book!
By Ellis Bell
Unlike a lot of the writers who sprung out of the medieval period, the Decameron is extremely readable. 100 stories organized into 10-day chunks makes this book a classic piece of literature... and unlike Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, you don't have to wade through the language to get at the meaning (part of this has to do with the translation of Italian into modern English).

During the Plague of the mid-14th century, ten people (7 women and 3 men) escape the city of Florence to the then-countryside of Fiesole. Each day they elect a king or queen, who dictates the theme of the day's stories. Centering around love, lust, sex, and relationships between people, the stories in the Decameron transcend stereotypes of the middle ages and created a scintillating and fresh approach to the art of storytelling. The Decameron is one of my favorite novels; this is the second time I've read it, and it never ceases to amaze me by the depth of human life represented.

In addition, this is an excellent translation of the original; the translators manage to get at Boccaccio's meaning without destroying his prose.

The Dark Side of Shelley
By Luca Graziuso and Marina Ross
Edward Dowden was an Irish critic and mediocre poet, who was most noted for his critical works on Shakespeare. However what catapulted him to international fame and that which made him a name of currency among readers of the romantics was his biography of Shelley. This is the official biography based on the archives collected at Boscombe Manor by Mary Shelley and her son, Sir Percy Florence Shelley, these are now found at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The impact that this biographical work had on Victorain critics cannot be overestimated. Shelley's character is depicted in a rather depriciatory vein, with repeated invectives, sustained charges of childishness and callous selfishness and, as if it were not enough, his poetry is affected with a bloated sense of utopian idealism, referred to as overdramatic and teeming with empty abstractions. Why was this critic chosen to write a biography of a poet so politically and theologically dissident is a question that has yet to be answered. Shelley is insistently demeaned as odious, frivolous, ridiculous, and irrational. The biographer uses language of a scathing stamp to defame Shelly as he abandons Harriet Westbrook and his daughter Ianthe; while later while recounting the suicide of Mary Shelley's half-sister Fanny Imlay Godwin he is obviously intent on imputing responsibility on the author of Prometheus Unbound, depicting him as insensitive and free of scruples. His relationship to the Godwins is fleshed out in painstaking but all-important details, and that with Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt is scoured with no less scrutiny and maligned intent. His days at OXford, with ensuing expulsion are of particular interest because they set the tone for the entire work. As he befriended Thomas Hogg, as he read omnivorously for up to 16 hours a day, his mind full fancies, he published a seditious tract on Atheism and was expeditiously expelled by the Tory bigs that held official and unofficial sway over the university. His knowledge of the world is characterized as boyish and unexpurgated of a tendency to mark with virility where his effeminacy was most petty. Women had no place in politics those days and his spiritual affimity with the iridescence of mother Earth seemed to be a flaw Dowden would not forgive him.
The condescending tone of Dowden came to haunt Shelley for years before an attempt at rehabilitation surfaced during the early 20th century, yet once again compromised by TS Eliot's rather churlish denigrating description of Shelley's poetry as stuffed with the ideas of adolescence, an empyrian void that TS Eliot found repellent.
However the value of this work goes far beyond the critical aura that it emanated in time, for it contributes a wealth of anecdotes that are referenced to letters and poems themselves, so as to render the reading of these that much more complete and satisfying. It is, and shall forever remain, a particularly fresh historical treasure since it reminds us of the place of interpretation and the ideological imperatives of early scholars, vividly defined in such a promulgation as this. We may never get enough of this biography because we must return to it every time we try to understand Shelley and begin by as skewed a portrait as any poet has suffered.
The language and the theoretical applications employed are refined and keen, however specific to its time and philosophical climate.
A necessary read for any scholar and an exceptional engaging work for fans of Shelley, or more broadly speaking his circle in general.
As another great critic Horace Smith wrote in his obituary for the PAris Monthly Review, "never was there a name associated with more black, poisonous and bitter calumny than his. Shelley had the misfortune to entertain, from his very earliest youth, opinions, both in religion and politics, that were diametrically opposed to established systems."
The Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley is outstanding in its ideological imprint on our ideas on the poet, the man and the political vanguardist, who by some standards was merely a rash dreamy youth who refused to come down from Parnassus as he composed in purity was others found adulterous and infalmmatory.

A Rip-Roaring Adventure of One of Literature's Most Famous Heroes
By Litlovingmama
Although written in 1808, this version of Homer's Odyssey is is surprisingly readable. Yes, the language is "King-James-ish", but the story is so interesting and Lamb's powers of description are so good that you are soon pulled in. He skips over some of the duller details of Homer's epic poem and sticks to Ulysses adventures.

I liked Lamb for daring to make moral judgments, calling the greedy sailors "covetous wretches" and the Cyclops a "cannibal." When Ulysses' men eat oxen reserved for the gods, Lamb describes the feast a "rash and sacrilegious banquet." He details Ulysses' descent into hell and of the horrible punishments being suffered there. And he emphasizes Ulysses' choosing to be faithful to his wife in spite of the repeated advances of Calypso.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

The Speed Merchants: A Journey Through the World of Motor Racing - 1969-1972, by Michael Keyser

The Speed Merchants tells the story of Michael Keyser's racing and film experience, across the U.S. and Europe, from 1969 through 1972. He relives what it was like to watch the great Ferrari 512s and Porsche 917s that dominated the world manufacturer's series in 1970; to follow Mark Donohue and Roger Penske as they shook up the Trans-Am through Canada and the United States; to see McLaren's hold on the Can-Am finally ended. The Speed Merchants details the successes and failures of such drivers as Vic Elford, Brian Redman, Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Stewart; and racing at such tracks as Daytona, Sebring, Indianapolis, the Targa Florio, the Nürburgring, Monaco and Le Mans.

When first published in 1973, The Speed Merchants was hailed among other books on racing as the standard by which other works should be judged. Now, the author has totally revised the book, more than doubling the number of photographs and adding a personal dimension that could only be brought by someone in his unique position as driver, photographer, and filmmaker.

With brilliant full color photography and evocative prose, The Speed Merchants brings to vivid life the sights and sounds of a lost era.

fascinating story
By A Customer
A personal journal of motor racing in the late 60's and early 70's - Michael Keyser writes from the perspective of car owner, driver, and photographer. The contrast of that era with today's racing environment couldn't be more drastic: where today's races are computerized and clinical, the sport back then had a very personal touch ... and was dangerously cavalier. The book is let down only by the average photography.

After 35 years of reading and collecting sports car related titles (160 books and counting, with many long out of print and quite rare), Keyser's "The Speed Merchants," as well as his companion "A French Kiss With Death," remains among the top 10 I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The unique photography is alone worth the price. Unlike countless other sports car racing titles that are churned out with great fanfare (2005 has been a banner year), "The Speed Merchants" features page after page of photos that won't be seen anywhere else; they're alone worth the price of the book. The text is "fresh", not a rehash of some previous article or book by the same author as is more often than not the case in this field of writing. The original edition of "The Speed Merchants" was a milestone in sports car racing literature, but the revised edition is a welcome improvement on an already superb book. The text is clear, consise and tremendously informative- and that is what true followers of the wonderful racing seasons of the late 60s-early 70s are looking for. I've lost count of how many times I've picked this book up for a quick read, never failing to find some small bit of information that I'd missed before. While Keyser is an obviously talented writer and photographer with a sincere passion about the sport, he also brings to his work the added benefit of being a racer himself, and an extremely good one at that. That must certainly explain, at least to a degree, the overall quality of "The Speed Merchants". Here's hoping Keyser will attempt a detailed history of the entire 1970-71 sports car seasons- something long overdue.

THE STORY OF AMERICA'S FIRST MODERN TRUE SPORTS CAR
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (1958): “ For nearly a quarter of a century the American highway was without a domestic automobile which could accurately be labeled a true sports car. The names Stutz, Mercer, Dusenberg, Kissell and a host of others—including some as recent as Cord and Auburn have almost vanished from the American automotive vocabulary. The names and the magic they invoked are almost meaningless to the present generation of Americans.
No native name to replace them appeared until 1952 when the Chevrolet Division of the General Motors Corporation gave birth to the Corvette …”

Compressed Air: Its Production, Uses, and Applications (Classic Reprint), by Gardner D. Hiscox

Excerpt from Compressed Air: Its Production, Uses, and Applications

The progress made in widening the use of compressed air as well as cheapening its production by new inventions and new sources of power and transmission since the issue of the first edition has induced the author to add more matter in which some of the later appliances and methods of use are described.

The growing importance of the use of compressed air in deep mining, tunnel work, and in the industries has made it a standard element for the transmission of power.

The fast extending use of the explosive motor as a source of power for operating portable air compressors has solved a serious problem by localizing the power, the compressor, and the air-drill or riveter in the erection of the sky-scraper frames and in steel-bridge building.

The further improvements in the methods and in the machinery for compressing air appear to be in the refinement of design and construction, rather than in any new ideals. The increasing use of the various compressed-air systems for water supply has been in a great measure due to the economy of the explosive motor as a power for compressing air for all purposes, which has given this form of power a decided preference for small and portable units and is fast extending its usefulness through the increasing power of explosive motor units now being built.

The operation of forging hammers, from the smallest to the largest size, has received a great increase in its usefulness by the substitution of compressed air for the discomforting element of steam.

In the torpedo service compressed air has become a standard element of control in the submarine boats for ventilation, buoyancy, and vertical direction of steerage; it gives life to the adjuncts of marine warfare.

Air compression at high altitudes has been fully discussed in the new edition, and new tables of its conditions and volumes added.

This book is fascinating and easy to read
By Bruce E. Mccall
This is a detailed study of the United States industrial mobilization effort in World War I. The author, Benedict Crowell, was the US Assistant Secretary of War from 1917 to 1920. This book was originally published as “America’s Munitions 1917-1918” (c. 1919, 592 pages). However, this book (which repeats most of the previous chapters) adds another 170 pages and was originally printed in two volumes.

The United States faced an enormous challenge in 1917. America remained neutral throughout the first two and a half years of war because they believed that the British, French and Russians could defeat the Germans without outside help. After officially joining the war, they were shocked to learn that the Allies were really on the edge of defeat. Within less than two years, the US Army, with less than two hundred thousand men, had grown to a fully modern and well equipped army of four million. Not only did America have to mobilize an army from almost nothing, but they also had to mobilize America’s industry. It took about a year before the new factories could start delivering the equipment to the Army. A majority of the contracts would not be finished until early 1919.

This book examines the production of the many different types of supplies, weapons and other equipment needed to make a modern army. It covers the design and production of all kinds of weapons and ammunition, toxic gas and gas mask, air planes and airplane engines, balloons, wagons, motor vehicles a tanks, clothing and shoes, radios and field telephones, medical supplies and a host of other types of equipment. There are also chapters (not found in the previous book) on designing and building naval ordnance and escort ships.

Each chapter is a self-contained story of one type of weapon or equipment. These chapters cover the history of the many details involved in the design and production of the topic. The book names the factories involved and list the numbers of items contracted for, produced by the end of the war and final production numbers. Most of these items never made it to the front lines before the war ended in November 1918. There are over two hundred photographs and charts. There is also an index. This book is fascinating and easy to read.

Benedict Crowell wrote another equally interesting book “The Road to France, the Transportation of Troops and military Supplies 1917-1918” (c. 1921). This book is about the many problems of moving troops and supplies to the training centers, ports of embarkation and then on to France”.

This guy is hilarious! I'm new in the FAA so I got a lot to learn. I hope I have half of this story to tell after my retirement. Thank you for taking the time to share your story!!!

A very entertaining and enlightening read
By Kathleen Long
A great book! An enlightening look at what goes into air traffic control, sometimes humorous, often times frightening. Not sure if knowing what goes on behind the scenes makes a person want to climb into an airplane. Mr. Larson's first hand account of what it takes to do the job is riveting, even to someone who knows nothing about planes or flying. A well written, entertaining read with a message.

I truly love vectoring airplanes, what a rush…
By Mark C Cooke
Where to start, first I loved the book, not an avid reader but couldn't put it down. Now that being said I am a little biased, I worked with David in Miami and am still working as a controller. For the English major purest, you'll be able to critique this book, whatever. For me, English (written) ain’t my strong suit, I had no problems. Now for the book, this book is a documentary, a comedy, a non-fiction glimpse into the field of Air traffic control. It gives a sense of what it takes to do the job, a strong sense of what a controller has to put up with on a daily basis. This book has special meaning to me because I have lived it, and currently still do. It brought back many fond memories from my time in Miami and many emotions from the loss experienced there. I recommend reading for anyone interested in aviation; it gives a look into the requirements of air traffic control, a look into the world of ATC. I recommend for any controller out there, humor and a reflection on our career, I recommend for FAA management (Washington, down), as a glimpse into what YOUR doing wrong, I recommend for congressional members, as a testament of how the WORKFORCE is treated and hopeful that they will FIX it (not holding my breath though)… What can I say, I liked the book, made my own corrections, took notes and placed names from my personal experiences. Too bad Dave punched out in 2005, the imposed work rules of 2006 and the downward spiral of staffing and treatment of the workforce, would have been another book, if he could keep his head from exploding… As mentioned I still do the job, but the facts the Dave brings up on the FAA’s misguided decisions to run this agency, I’m one of the experience that will very soon find the door. I can work another 5.5 years, but can’t take the daily BS of dealing with poor decisions, but man I’ll miss it, I truly love vectoring airplanes, what a rush…

A well-written and very interesting book, which I found hard to put down. Readers with an interest in military aviation, will find this book interesting. The author's description of ETPS test pilot training was both interesting and revealing, as is the type of personality required to be a military test pilot. Enjoyable reading about the author's appreciation and description of various military test flying establishments (e.g. USAF, USN, France). By far the most "un-put-downable" aspect of the book were the stories of flying Cold War generation jets (e.g. Lightning, A-4, T-2, T-38 Canberra, Hunter, Gnat, F-104) and the early versions of the F-15. Stories of travel overseas to other "tp" school made made intriguing reading. Hilarious reading about the lucky last 2 Aussies (I'm a rural Aussie flying instructor) running to catch a rapidly taxiing Andover at an international airshow with the author as co-pilot, making for a departure slot-time. (Mike, I've e-mailed you in the past and if you read this, I reckon there's a TAE book 2)

Mike Brooke is an excellent writer. I have read all his books from his flying training and Canberra days, to his flight instructor days in the Chipmunk and the Canberra. He does not disappoint in this well written and informative narrative about his career as a test pilot, including his training as a test pilot.

Swann's Way, by Marcel Proust

“Swann’s Way “ (Du côté de chez Swann) is the first volume of the work of Marcel Proust in search of lost time (À la recherche du temps perdu). Several publishers refused to publish this book, which eventually will be published at the author's expense, in 1913, by the editor Bernard Grasset. In 1919, the Publisher Gallimard, published a further revised and corrected version from Proust. All the Recherche volumes are characterized by recurring themes, time and memory, so the tale from the author of autobiographical experiences. In the first section that has divided this volume, the Narrator recalls her childhood in the village of Combray; While the second section tells of falling in love of Charles Swann, a kind of alter ego of Marcel, against a young man named Odette; Finally, the third section introduces Gilberte, daughter of Charles Swann and Odette, which, after being only a playmate, becomes the narrator's first love….

Review
Audie Award winner Simon Vance (see Behind the Mike, LJ 11/15/08) elegantly narrates this first volume in Proust s poetic seven-volume work, first published in 1913 and alternately translated as Remembrance of Things Past and In Search of Lost Time. In it, the anonymous narrator s flowing reminiscences about Parisian high society explore and reexplore personalities, relationships, and frustrated ambitions. Those who consider Proust s monumental work to be one of the finest novels of the 20th century will enjoy this title; others may find it intolerably heavy going, particularly on audio. Vance s handling of the sweeping narrative, however, is excellent, recommending this title where there is interest. --Library Journal

One of the great pleasures of middle age
By Zeldock
Fortunately, I was never assigned Proust in school and, prior to picking up Swann's Way, knew of Proust mainly through a Monty Python sketch. I thus came to the book with almost no preconceptions. It was, without exaggerration, one of the best reading experiences I have ever had. Proust is unlike any other novelist, somehow looking at life with both incredible analytical detachment and, at the same time, a neurotic coloring that is all his own. But, to fully appreciate this work, you have to take it at the right time. That time, for me at least, is middle age, when you begin to accept your own neuroses, when your own life consists of 50% memories, and when you can appreciate the relentless dissecting of the immortal "types" who inhabit every society. I have gone on to read the next two novels in Proust's series and now have to force myself not to consume the remainder too hastily. Even if Proust turns you off the first time around, wait ten years and try again.

Duelling Translations
By Michael Gunther
Those of us who love Proust - either from long acquaintance, or from reading him for the very first time - can count ourselves fortunate in now having two very fine English translations to work from: the classic Moncrieff/Kilmartin rendition of the complete novel, and the new Lydia Davis translation of "Swann's Way." I've read and enjoyed both, because each brings something special and valuable to the work.
Davis is a breath of fresh air, being more literal (while still literary!) in that she follows the original French syntax and meaning more closely. I liked her translation, and applaud it. Normally, such a fine translation would be my first choice. However - and I admit this is a very subjective judgement - I was long ago seduced by the sheer beauty of Moncrieff/Kilmartin, and therefore cannot love the Davis translation quite so much. Of all authors, Proust requires us to surrender to the beauty of his language. Davis' translation is, for me, more likeable than loveable.
Really, it's an old (and impossible to resolve!) conflict between the more literal and the more "poetic" type of translation. I've dealt with this myself, in trying to translate Baudelaire, and there's no perfect answer. One thing I'd suggest (if you haven't read MK) is to get the MK translation of Swann's Way, now available in a very inexpensive paperback, along with Davis so that you can get a feel for both ways of appreciating Proust's great and magnificent work.

One of the great masterworks of world literature
By Robert Moore
We apply "classic" and "masterpiece" too liberally, but regardless of how loosely or strictly we deploy the terms, Marcel's Proust's extraordinary novel belongs to the shortest of short lists deserving such description. At the risk of hyperbole (though I do not thing it is hyperbolic), Proust is the one writer of the 20th century who perhaps belongs to the ages more than to his own time, who belongs with Shakespeare and Dante and Homer.
Many are put off Proust by not understanding the structure of his work and his writing strategy. The book, to many, seems to have no point and no plot. The novel actually does have a plot, albeit a simple and not easy to discern one: Will the narrator (usually termed "Marcel") become a writer? Through seven long volumes, we watch Marcel variously resolve to write and then forsake his resolve, we see him even forget for enormous lengths of time his intent to write. Through love affairs, through events with his friends, through reflections on all matter of subjects and experiences of every kind, Marcel finally comes in the final volume to rediscover his vocation and the subject of his work.
This first volume in the series contains many of the most famous episodes in all of Proust. The famous passage in which the Narrator tells of his not being able to fall asleep as a child is found in the first pages. The most famous section in all of Proust, that of his eating as an adult a madeleine that first creates an inexplicable sense of joy and then engenders a plethora of involuntary memories of his childhood, is also found in this volume. The second half is the remarkable story of "Swann in Love," in which family friend Charles Swann falls in love, much to his surprise, with the courtesan Odette.
This first volume glitters for the same reason that subsequent volumes do: Proust's remarkable sentences, in which he heaps phrase upon apt phrase on top of a carefully concealed central idea; Proust's extraordinarily complex, interesting, believable, and brilliant characters (I personally think he handles character better than any other author); and the wonderful passion and sensibility that permeates every page.
I will end with a piece of advice: Proust, more than any writer I know, gives back as much as you point into him. If you expend a great deal of effort in working through his masterpiece, you will be comparably rewarded. If, on the other hand, you pick up SWANN'S WAY casually, expecting a relaxed, entertaining read, you will be profoundly disappointed. But if you approach him with an open mind, a great deal of patience, and a willingness to work your way carefully through each sentence, you just might believe this to be the most remarkable thing you have ever read.
