Excerpt from Irish Books and Irish People

My publisher must take at least some of the responsibility for reviving these essays. All bear the marks of the period at which they were written; and some of them deal with the beginnings of movements which have since grown to much greater strength, and in growing have developed new characteristics at the expense of what was originally more prominent. Other pages, again, take no account of facts which today must be present to the mind of every Irish reader, and so are, perhaps significantly, out of date. Nobody for instance, could now complain that Irish humour is lacking in seriousness. Synge disposed of that criticism - and, indeed, the Abbey Theatre in its tone as a whole may be accused of neglecting Ireland's gift for simple fun. Yet Lady Gregory made the most of it in her
"Spreading the News," and Mr. Yeats in his "Pot of Broth." - How beautifully W. G. Fay interpreted an Irish laughter which had no bitterness in it.

But the strong intellectual movement which has swept over Ireland has been both embittering and embittered. These last five and twenty years have been the most formative in the country's history of any since Ireland became the composite nation that she now is, or, perhaps, has yet to become.

The Igor Tale: An Annotated Bibliography of 20th Century Non-Soviet Scholarship on the Slovo O Polku Igoreve (Routledge Revivals), by Henr

The great Slavic medieval epic, The Igor Tale, recounts the story of a Russian prince who leads his men into battle against the Mongols. In 1935, Soviet scholar P.N. Berkov began to compile a bibliography of Western European translations of the poem, later followed by several Soviet Union biographies compiling the works on the epic that had appeared in the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. Here, Cooper attempts to remedy the shortcomings of previous scholar work: to seriously survey the large body of non-Soviet scholarship on the poem particularly Western contributions to Igor scholarship. Originally published in 1978, Cooper traces foreign scholarship and translations from 1900-1976 from a wide variety of Western and some Eastern nations including the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Japan and many other countries. This title is a valuable resource for students of Literature and Slavic Studies.

A Tale of Two Cities: Unabridged edition (Immortal Classics), by Charles Dickens

A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period. It follows the lives of several characters through these events. With sales of over 200 million copies, A Tale of Two Cities is the biggest selling novel in history.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

Review
''Beginning and ending with some of English literature's most famous lines, Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities thrives on tension and conflict, all set against a bloody backdrop of the French Revolution . . . . Through the senses, Dickens transports us deeper and deeper into another era with each turn of the page. Smell the acidity of red wine as it spills on the streets and ominously stains the faces, hands, and feet of peasants who lap it up in desperation; feel the competing emotions of heartache and hope as one of Lucie's suitors stands trial; hear the cries of the raging mob and the clangs of their weapons as they storm the Bastille; see the glint of the guillotine as it falls swiftly to its victim below. The novel's sense of urgency and intimacy will draw you in and propel you through one of the most tumultuous times in history.'' --Oprah's Book Club

''What can be said about a book which provides us with the single finest opening line in English literature, outside of Genesis 1:1 in the KJV? Dickens was, without any doubt whatsoever, the finest writer of historical literature / romance fiction of the nineteenth century.'' --AllReaders.com

An Eighth Grader reviews A Tale of Two Cities
By A Customer
This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

It is the best of books, it is the worst of books....
By Newton Ooi
I was first introduced to this book when I was 14 years old in my 8th grade English class. I found it utterly overwhelming; in its cast, its plotlines, its settings, its themes and most of all, in the intricate web the various relationships create. I only understood three things about this book. First, the two cities are London and Paris. Second, France was convulsing itself with the French Revolution while England was undergoing changes that would prepare it to enter the Industrial Revolution. Third, English in Dickens' time did not resemble English at the end of the 20th century, but somehow seemed similar to the English used in Hollywood epic movies from the 1950s and 1960s like Spartacus, Ben-hur, the Ten Commandments, Cleopatra, etc...

Years later, I picked up this book and reread it. I considered this a labor, not of love, but of duty. This book is so famous and used so often in English literature classes that I felt I had to read it again for a deeper understanding. What I got from this book a 2nd time around is a profoundly subtle yet accurate sociological and psychological study of what happens to a society and a community that is built on shaky foundations. Specifically, France was an aristocracy where a tiny minority owned all the land. The rest of society was organized into tiers that varied in their opportunities of becoming landowners. Because of this pyramid structure, most of the people hewed to the social order knowing that yes they get crapped on by those above them, but there's always somebody below them to take advantage of.

Eventually this social Ponzi scheme comes to a screeching halt with the French Revolution. Enough people have had enough that they decide to start over. In the process a lot of people get killed and a lot of property changes hands. So woven into this story of a society's collapse are individual tales of woe, revenge, sacrifice, retribution, love and lust. Some are wrongly imprisoned or executed, while others willingly trade places to free those who have been marked for punishment. Families are torn asunder, and friendships are made and betrayed.

Overall, this book is a classic; though not appropriate for anyone not in their mid-teens yet. Its careful depiction of a society warrants its reading for those interested in 18th century Western history. But it should be read with notes and study guides for its depth and complexity can easily lose the interest and focus of many readers.

A Tale of Two Cities
By mp
The more Dickens I read, the more impressed I become at his skill as a writer. No matter the form, be it short, long, or a monolith like some of his best works, Dickens excels at changing his style of characterization and plot to fit whatever mode he writes in. "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of his shorter novels, and he manages to make the most of out of the allotted space. The compression of the narrative sacrifices Dickens's accustomed character development for plot and overall effect, but what we get is still phenomenal.
"A Tale of Two Cities" begins in 1775, with Mr. Lorry, a respectable London banker, meeting Lucie Manette in Paris, where they recover Lucie's father, a doctor, and mentally enfeebled by an unjust and prolonged imprisonment in the Bastille. This assemblage, on their journey back to England, meets Charles Darnay, an immigrant to England from France who makes frequent trips between London and Paris. Upon their return to England, Darnay finds himself on trial for spying for France and in league with American revolutionaries. His attorney, Stryver, and Stryver's obviously intelligent, if morally corrupt and debauched, assistant, Sydney Carton, manage to get Darnay exonerated of the charges against him. Darnay, a self-exiled former French aristocrat, finds himself compelled to return to France in the wake of the French Revolution, drawing all those around him into a dangerous scene.
Dickens portrays the French Revolution simplistically, but powerfully, as a case of downtrodden peasants exacting a harsh revenge against an uncaring aristocratic, even feudal, system. The Defarge's, a wine merchant and his wife, represent the interests of the lower classes, clouded by hatred after generations of misuse. Darnay, affiliated by birth with the French aristocracy, is torn between sympathy for his native country in its suffering, and his desire to be free of his past.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot, much like the works of Sir Walter Scott, wherein the characters themselves assert less agency, finding themselves forced to deal with the tide of epic events. Richard Maxwell's introduction to this newest Penguin edition does a good job outlining the themes of doubling and literary influence that Dickens works with. One specific influence I discerned in reading "A Tale" that Maxwell doesn't metion is Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France," which if nothing else, gives the feeling that the rampant violence of the early revolution and the later Reign of Terror has brought about an irreversible change in human nature. While Dickens remains cautiously optimistic throughout the novel that France can recover, the tone of the novel speaks to the regression of humanity into a more feral, primal state, rather than advertise any real hope for its enlightened progress.
Despite the supposed dichotomy between England and France in the novel, Dickens seems to suggest throughout that there are no real differences, due to the way that human nature is consistently portrayed. With England in between two revolutions, American and French, Lucie's sensitivity early in the novel to hearing the "echoing" footsteps of unseen multitudes indicates a palpable fear that the "idyllic" or "pastoral" England he tries to portray is not exempt from the social discontent of America or France. In this light, stolid English characters like Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and Jarvis Lorry appear to almost overcompensate in their loyalty to British royalty. In a novel that deals with death, religion, mental illness, I could go on and on for a week, but I won't. One of those novels whose famous first and last lines are fixed in the minds of people who've never even read it, "A Tale of Two Cities" demands to be read and admired.

A sweet read!
By Karen C Groves
This was a sweet story concerning Darcy's letter to Elizabeth at Rosings. The twist is that she wrote him back, and the story is about the reactions of both.

I would have liked it to have been extended a bit as it seemed a tad rushed toward the end. Needed a bit more editing. And, please note, I have seen many Regency authors use the word angst, however, first usage was circa 1942.

All in all, though, it was a nice, enjoyable read. I look forward to Ms. Grace's future writings.

A refreshing cup of sweet tea?...while reading...letters?
By S. L. Majczan
Yes, it is a very short excerpt/variation on that insulting proposal of marriage to Elizabeth and the reaction on both parts while Darcy is visiting his aunt in Kent. I read it in about an hour while lingering over my breakfast.

We all know of Darcy's long letter in which he defends himself against the charges laid at his door by Elizabeth in that totally unexpected refusal of his proposal. Propriety has already been ignored when she accepts a letter from a man to whom she is not engaged. But then Elizabeth meets Col. Fitzwilliam, and in discussing Georgiana (or is he?) when he uses a suggestion with a double meaning that a letter might serve the purpose of uplifting a certain depressed soul.

Now Elizabeth has something to consider, but if she is to act on it then how does she get a letter into his hands? He is due to leave Rosings. She doesn't find him walking the grove. But then Charlotte announces a dinner party. Read carefully as there are hidden meanings in much of the communication. Yes, we always want more but this was a sweet little sip of possible communication between our favorite two. Enjoy!

A sweet little morsel....
By Erika L Hoemke
....though leaving me with a giant desire to know more!!!! Ugh the bane of the short story!!! They can be a respite from the long, all consuming novels, bringing glimpses of stories for just a taste!!! Though I have to say Four Days in April is a delightful torture to read, it leaves me with wanting to read more of how ODC sketches each other's characters better and forms an attachment. Miss Grace is such a delight and has such a way with words in which to swirl her stories to life. I look forward to reading more of her spellbinding stories of ODC!!! I wholeheartedly recommend this short story to all JAFFers!!

Excerpt from Modern American Methods of Copper Smelting

The collection of papers which forms this book was mostly prepared in moments stolen from more active professional duties, and must subsequently lack the uniformity and completeness which is compatible only with ample leisure and freedom from other more pressing cares.

It has been my intention to confine myself principally to facts gleaned from my own experience, and only to touch upon theoretical questions when essential for the understanding of practical facts.

As the items of cost, both of construction and of subsequent operation, are amongst the most important of all the practical questions that face the originators of new smelting enterprises, and as these are virtually unattainable to the general public, I have gone into these figures in considerable detail, not calculating expenses as they appear on paper, and when everything is running smoothly, but giving the actual results of building on a large scale, and of smelting many thousand tons of ores under varying circumstances, and in all of the ordinary kinds of furnaces.

Owing to the magnitude of the subject, I found it impossible to touch upon the so-called "Wet Methods" without increasing the size and consequent cost of this volume to an extent that might probably peril its circulation.

The author desires to acknowledge the valuable assistance of Mr. J. E. Mills, in connection with the geology of the Butte mining district, and to credit Mr. H. M. Howe and Mr. A. F. Wendt with the use he has made of their papers on "Copper Smelting" and on "The Pyrites Deposits of the Alleghanies."

But, above all, he has to thank Mr. James Douglas for a thorough and minute revision and criticism of his manuscript just before publication.

A pretty good piece of industrial history.
By Pete Roche
It's my fault that I didn't look at the copyright date. This is an early Twentieth Century book on what was "modern" in the copper smelting industry in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. It has little to do with modern copper smelting. It's an interesting piece of history, but that's all.
In the book's defense, there do not seem to be any decent textbooks on today's copper smelting methods -- at least none sold by Amazon.

Tiny Surrealism: Salvador DalĂ and the Aesthetics of the Small, by Roger Rothman

Though one of the most popular artists of the twentieth century, Salvador Dalí is typically seen as peripheral to the dominant practices of modernist painting. Roger Rothman’s Tiny Surrealism argues that this marginal position is itself a coherent response to modernism. It demonstrates how Dalí’s practice was organized around the logic of the inconsequential by focusing on Dalí’s identification with things that are literally tiny (ants, sewing needles, breadcrumbs, blackheads, etc.) as well as those that are metaphorically small (the trivial, the weak, the superficial, and the anachronistic). In addition to addressing the imagery of Dalí’s paintings, Tiny Surrealism demonstrates that the logic of the small was a fundamental factor in Dalí’s adherence to the techniques of miniaturist illusionism. Long derided as antimodernist and kitsch, Rothman demonstrates that Dalí’s style was itself a strategy of the small aimed at subverting the dominant values of modern painting.

Tiny Surrealism does not only examine Dalí’s pictorial work; it also probes the artist’s many public pronouncements and private correspondences. By attending to the peculiarities of Dalí’s technique and examining overlooked aspects of his writings, Tiny Surrealism is the first study to detail his deliberate subversion of modernist orthodoxies.

Review
“Written in a lucid and readable style appropriate even for the novice student of surrealism, Tiny Surrealism excavates a different side to Dalí: that of the empathetic, stunningly perspicacious, and vulnerable man, who is always favoring the underdog. . . . Tiny Surrealism has great potential to serve as an introduction to Dalí’s complex oeuvre.”—Abigail Susik, Modernism/Modernity (Abigail Susik Modernism/Modernity 2015-03-05)

"Tiny Surrealism is a solid, nuanced piece of scholarly inquiry. . . . Rothman offers a fresher perspective and a richer vocabulary to rethink Dalí's place in the surrealist universe. Tiny Surrealism successfully rescues Dalí from such unfair critical isolation and sheds overdue light on the intricacies of such a multidimensional artist."—Pablo Baler, Hispania (Pablo Baler)

"Undergraduates and general audiences will find distinct new approaches to the well-known but inadequately analyzed artist Dalí. Rothman's book opens pathways to insert Dalí into the scholarly discourses surrounding modern art."—Choice (Choice)

“Rothman’s book is a creative, readable, and invigorating reevaluation of the early career of Salvador Dalí, one of the most recognizable figures in twentieth century art and intellectual history, yet also one of the most vexing and misunderstood. . . . Rothman’s discussions of Dalí’s texts and paintings are consistently enlightening and provocative, and the book promises to make a substantive impact in the fields of modernism and surrealism.”—Jonathan Eburne, author of Surrealism and the Art of Crime (Jonathan Eburne)

“The strength of this study—in fact, its undeniable contribution to our knowledge of Dalí—lies in its very detailed and comprehensive exposition—indeed the close and quite perceptive analysis of the ‘little things,’ as they emerge in Dalí’s early works. . . . Tiny Surrealism is a valuable contribution to a more comprehensive understanding of Dalí’s art and aesthetics.”—Haim Finkelstein, author of Salvador Dalí's Art and Writing, 1927–1942 (Haim Finkelstein)

Harvey details the first major clash between conservationists and developers after World War II, the successful fight to prevent the building of Echo Park Dam. The dam on the Green River was intended to create a recreational lake in northwest Colorado and generate hydroelectric power, but would have flooded picturesque Echo Park Valley and threatened Dinosaur National Monument, straddling the Utah-Colorado border near Wyoming.

A milestone for the wilderness movement
By George Alderson
Thankfully, the days are long gone when anyone could seriously propose to build huge dams in a national park or a wilderness area, but as recently as 40 years ago this actually happened -- twice! In this book Professor Mark Harvey tells the story of the US Bureau of Reclamation's proposal in 1949 to build Echo Park Dam in the magnificent canyons of Dinosaur National Monument (Utah), and how concerned citizens got organized and persuaded the US Congress to say No. (There was a repeat ten years later with proposed dams in the Grand Canyon.)

Professor Harvey analyzes the diverse political forces that clashed in this first big campaign of the wilderness movement. He traces how citizens' groups unaccustomed to controversy got their act together and seized the attention of the national public, at a time when few people had even heard of the wilderness idea. He shows how eloquent citizen leaders such as Howard Zahniser and David Brower collaborated, and how a few courageous legislators took up the cause on Capitol Hill.

There were many legislative battles like this one in the years that followed, but this was the first big one, and Mark Harvey tells the story well.

Echo Park and Dinosaur National Monument
By Arthur Digbee
This appeared at about the same time as Cosco's _Echo Park: Struggle for Conservation_, and covers much of the same ground. The differences flow mostly from length - - Cosco's book is half as long as this one.

With more space, Harvey can cover events with much greater richness. For example, he places the controversy in a larger context and spends more time talking about non-environmental opposition to the dam. Those opponents include not only California (covered in Cosco) but small-government conservatives, even in the West; the Army Corps of Engineers; Midwestern states worried about the effects on farm surpluses; and some divided states such as New Mexico.

Harvey also spends more time talking about the members of the conservationist coalition, instead of telling the story from David Brower's perspective. His early chapters also ground the story of the monument more fully, explaining how and why Ickes enlarged the monument instead of simply describing the events.

Some of the extra detail is more than we really need, and there's a little backtracking and repetition. Still, the narrative is well-written and moves along nicely. It can't be easy to write a book that makes water policy interesting, but Harvey has succeeded here. It's a shame that this book is not for sale in the park alongside Cosco's (which is). The choice depends on the level of detail you want.

An 19th Century Materpiece!
By William Slater III
Sidney Lanier was perhaps the greatest poet produced by the South during the the 19th Century. His descriptions of the nature and the Georgian Marshes of Glen, as in "the slant yellow beam of the sun doth seem like a lane from Heaven that leads to a dream..." and "belief overmasters doubt and I know that I know..." are words that feed the soul with the timeless nector of wisdom and humanity. I treasure this book and any student of the American South and/or of American Poetry will find Mr. Lanier's style of alliteration and assonance, together with his wonderful imagery to be a feast for the soul in solitude.

The poems of Sidney Lanier
By Joanna
I love this book of poems of Sidney Lanier. Our state of Georgia is honored to have had such a great poet. I especially like the "Marshes of Glynn". St Simons Island in Glynn County is my favorite vacation spot.

One of the great Southern poets
By Charles van Buren
I was taught in more than one class in more than one school, that the three great Southern poets are, in order, Edgar Allan Poe, Sidney Lanier, and Henry Timrod. I have not read or heard anything in the past 50 years to change my opinion. In fact, one of my favorite books is Lanier's retelling of the King Arthur stories. Unlike my experience with Henry Timrod, I discovered Lanier on my own by simply browsing through the stacks in our high school library. Lanier's poetry is excellent. Well it is unless you consider Richard Brautigan to be great literature, in which case I think we speak different languages. I for one have never sampled illegal drugs or regularly over indulged in alcohol.
