Save you money....see the free British video that this is parodying

Have I heard right!!!! Barber and Rylance providing a genuine biography of Willilam Shakespeare and giving him credit for the plays with his name on them? This is incredible since Barber thinks Marlowe wrote the plays....Kit Marlowe and terrific playwright who died in 1593, so could not have written the Canon...and Rylance, a douber, who appeared in "Anonymous" and who obviously thinks Oxford wrote the plays, yes that Oxford who died in 1604, before some of the greatest tragedies and the 3 romances and Henry VIII came out.

You'd be better off watching the British serious that this book is parodying. Fifty, I think, experts provide expert opinion on various aspects of Shakespeare's life. They don't have an ax to grind like these two buffoons.

About the Author
Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. However, Poe is best known for his works of the macabre, including such infamous titles as The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lenore, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Part of the American Romantic Movement, Poe was one of the first writers to make his living exclusively through his writing, working for literary journals and becoming known as a literary critic. Full of flaws

The data in this book is filled with errors, from dates to biographies. It has too many flaws to be considered a good reference source. A few examples; Ailsby states that Richard Glücks, the infamous inspector of the concentration camps made some sort of spectacular escape, in true life, Glücks killed himself in British captivity. Ailsby also states that Herbert Kappler (the head of the Gestapo in Rome) escaped from his prison cell in the -80s and has not been seen after that. And again Ailsby has got it all wrong. Kappler escaped in -77 and died of cancer in -78 in Germany.
It seems that Ailsby's primary source on the Knight's Cross winners was Jost Schneider's "Their Honour Was Loyalty" that is clear from the way he copies Schneider's text.
So my advice is that keep away from this rotten apple.

It's rather surprising that some reviewers say it's too pedantic or picky to point out the flat-out errors, misinformation, omissions, unattributed borrowings, and lack of citations in this propagandistic, sophomoric twaddle. One can get a far superior summary even on wikipedia of the individuals included by the author, including their actual careers, what they were charged with by the special-interest groups, and what their involvement was, if any. And placing some of the most able Waffen SS military commanders in the same list as the homeland security SS is arguable to start with. If a reader is interested in the topic, learn the actual facts concerning who invented, drew up hit lists in advance, staffed, 'investigated', gathered reams of provably false 'eye witness' testimony, fake 'evidence' and forced or faked 'confessions' in their so-called post-war war crimes prosecutions. And most of the information the author provides is from the charges brought, and has long since been proved false.

About the Author

RAINER MARIA RILKE (1875–1926) is considered one of the German language’s greatest twentieth-century poets. Among other works, he wrote Letters to a Young Poet, The Sonnets to Orpheus, and the novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. Editions of Rilke’s Letters on God and Letters to a Young Woman, The Book of Hours: Prayers to a Lowly God, Duino Elegies, and New Poems are published by Northwestern University Press.

JAMES D. REID is an associate professor of philosophy at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. He has written on the philosophical legacies of Kant, Fichte, Dilthey, and Heidegger, among others. He coedited Thoreau’s Importance for Philosophy (2012).

Fabulous

This review is for Part One of the book (chapters 1-3). Dr. Reid has written a wonderful book on poetry, philosophy, and the philosophy of poetry. For anyone interested in any of those three subjects, this book should be on your bookshelf. To me, chapter two alone is worth owning this book! Dr. Reid's argument that objective truth begins when we care about things, is brilliant; after all, we only seek the truth about certain things because we care about those things (and we don't seek the truth of things we don't care about).

I believe that it is important to note that Dr. Reid's writing style is academic. I mention this because I recently read a review of another book (by a different author on a different subject) where one of the "criticisms" was that the book was written is a pedantic style which was not readily digestible for the "average" reader. Unless your IQ is remarkably high (and not that you think you are smarter than average; everyone thinks that), this is not a "page-turner" that you will be getting through in a matter of a few hours. This is a scholarly book on a scholarly topic and requires work by the reader. If this is a criticism then we as human beings are doomed. There are times where the book gets weighty; there are times where Dr. Reid makes reference to things readers will probably not be familiar with; there are times when you will have to set the book down and think about what was just said. It's a philosophy book; it is supposed to do those things. Any criticism that the book is difficult to read is more a criticism of the reader than the author. [I'm off my soapbox.]

I have not commented on Part Two because I do not speak or read German so I cannot in good conscience say anything about the quality of the translation. The poetry itself is moving and beautiful, but I cannot say whether that is the work of the poet or the translator. I will say that if you are a fan of poetry then Part Two is well worth owning the book as well.

A wonderful book on a topic that is often overlooked. I highly recommend it!

Terrific, Informative Read

I recently finished reading Reid's book, Being Here is Glorious. It is written beautifully, poetically.
His essays offer many terrific insights, and include a wonderful accounting of the longstanding philosophical bias against poetry, paying special attention to Plato's writings.
Reid has also made me see how some of my own philosophical writing is "poetical."
Having never read Rilke, I was completely taken in by his poetry, and I can't help but believe that Reid's translation contributed greatly to this experience.
While Reid’s book is poetical, I don’t mean to sell his scholarship short. His work is philosophically rigorous, offering an extensive set of references and engagements with the secondary literature on Rilke, Plato, and others, in the endnotes.
The book would be a welcome addition to courses in Aesthetics, but it should also appeal to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry, and the meaning of being human.
This is a really fabulous book.

The Culinary Window

The title is attractive.

The credentials of the author are compelling.

So I read the book, Short Stories by Jesus--the enigmatic parables of a controversial rabbi, as an early morning and late night meditation during the seasons of light this year: Christmas and Hanukkah, 2014.

I have been a practicing and observant Christian for 67 years. The stories of Jesus' parables are so intimately familiar to me because they were the tales that fueled my learning to read in the 1940's before I ever went to school. To say I have read and heard each of Amy-Jill Levin's selections of Jesus' short stories 67 times would be an understatement. I thought I had them down cold.

As I ploddingly chewed on each morsel this winter I tasted the truths in each mouthful through a whole new culinary window. Some I resisted because of the unfamiliar flavorings. Some were reminiscent of my favorite meals from childhood. Some were bitter in my mouth with what seemed like foreign spices or odd proportions.

I suspended judgment and bit-by-bit began digesting Dr. Levine's theological feast. Every bite, those redolent of great meals throughout my life and those bitter in my mouth because of the changed viewpoints they evoked, became sweet as honey and thoroughly, spiritually nourishing in my belly.

I am slow in posting this review for 3 reasons:

1. I am still caught up in a glorious reevaluation and deepened appreciation of the foundations of Christianity and its life in my life.
2. Levine's wonderful bibliography and references have led to other books to read which supplement her themes, and for now I just can't stop!
3. The book, literarily very well written, is not a quick-and-easy read. It is challenging before it becomes deeply satisfying.

This is not a book just for Christians and/or Jews. This is a book for anyone who wrestles with the common human search for the meaning of life and the role that religion or lack of religion plays in that wrestling match.

It has been a long time since a book took me on a journey through time and space and belief like this one has taken me: so absorbing, so challenging, so provocative. If a reader's mind has not become hardened by time and habit, but has remained curious, confident, and open to new insights to inform old and familiar thoughts, there are not enough stars to rate a book presented with the style and skill of this contemporary author and this contemporary subject.

Amy-Jill Levine puts nine stories of Jesus back into their original context. She challenges many modern interpretations of those stories and includes more than 400 notes, many with multiple references (never, incidentally, of Wikipedia) to explain her views. She deplores anti-Jewish interpretations, she does not disparage Jesus, nor Christianity. Anyone with more than a cursory interest in what the Bible says should carefully read this book.

Open-minded Approach to Thought-Provoking Parables

This author provides many insights if you're open to different interpretations based on contextual knowledge of the period. My favorite is the parable of "The Pearl." I had my own favorite interpretation, but I enjoyed seeing how many different folks have seen this entirely differently. This is the point of good parables, more than one meaning can be pulled forth. If you approach the Bible as having fixed singular meanings, this book is not for you.

I admit I was challenged by a very scholarly approach, dissecting the parable carefully. I often just wanted to get to the summary--tell me what it really means! But this misses the power of a good story. Sometimes to appreciate the full meaning, you need to turn it over, look at it from different angles, feel it slowly and try on these different meanings. This may not be the approach many take to the Bible, as we often want to believe there's one firm meaning there that all can see. What this author does successfully is show us that Jesus was like many thoughtful leaders--they didn't provide answers as much as they provoked us to search ourselves for how their story fits our circumstances.

May you all find your "pearl."

After many years of experience in railway construction, operation and administration, the author has published a series of works on those subjects, principally in relation to the successive stages of regulation of the railway system of the United States by means of legislation, both State and national. These works are largely the outcome of the author's own personal knowledge, experience and research, and reference is herein made to them, in some cases, where the same matters have been discussed at greater length in the former volumes.

It is the aim of the present work to describe the progressive development of efficiency in the operation of the railway system of the United States, as compared with similar progress in other countries. It has been prepared at the suggestion of many persons who have inquired for authoritative works on the subject, that would be of value especially to students in technical schools and to junior railroad employees, as well as of interest to the general reader. With this two-fold object in view, there have been added, in appendices, very complete tables of statistics and much strictly technical information, drawn from official sources. Reference to authorities and explanations of terms have been given in footnotes.

The work is devoted to operation, as distinguished from administration. It deals with facts, and not with opinions ; therefore, it does not discuss matters of finance, or rates or labor questions.

The author desires to acknowledge the valued assistance of railroad officials and friends in bringing the information down to the present year, and for much that is included in the chapter on the use of railroads in war-time. In the revision of technical matter, preparation of index and addenda, correction of proofs and general supervision of the work through the press, he has had the aid of Charles A. Hammond, C. E.

The subject of "Aircraft in Warfare," with which Mr. Lanchester deals, is, and for some time will be, highly controversial. In each of its three aspects, the scientific, the military, and the material or manufacturing, it is still in the stage of experiment and speculation. The results obtained cannot always be made available for the information of the general public, and those which are available have usually been set forth in terms so technical, either in a scientific or a military sense, as to be somewhat difficult for the general reader to understand. Very little trustworthy information, therefore, has been disseminated, and the uninstructed public, hungry for information on a novel and alluring subject, of which the national importance is evident, has fallen an easy prey to the imposter. Any plausible rogue, gifted with sufficient assurance, and aided by a ready pen or supple tongue, has been able to pose as an "aeronautical expert," and to find some kind of following.

Lanchester's battle model

Personally I was interested only in a particular part of this book, namely Lanchester's battle model. It goes like this. There is a battle between two armies, one with A soldiers and one with B soldiers. Each army has a constant efficiency coefficient (determined by weaponry, training, etc.): a side A soldier takes out a enemies per unit time while a side B soldier takes out b enemies per unit time. The battle is then described by the differential equations dA/dt=-bB and dB/dt=-aA. Dividing the first by the second gives aAda = bBdb, which we integrate to get aA^2-bB^2=constant. (Lanchester avoids mentioning integration and uses a direct infinitesimal argument.) The sign of this constant determines the outcome of the battle, since if, for example, there are side A troops still standing when B reaches zero then the constant must be positive (indeed we see that the number of side A troops surviving the battle can be calculated by setting B=0 and solving for A). Also, the fact that the strength of an army is proportional to the square of its size has an important strategical implication: never divide your forces. For example, assuming equal efficiency a=b=1, an army of 5000 could handle an army of 7000 split into two, 5000^2=4000^2+3000^2, but if the 5000 army faced the full 7000 army at once it would be destroyed after having killed only about 2100 enemies, 7000^2-5000^2=4900^2.

Revolutionary for its time

This historical book (1917) documents revolutionary insight for its time into how to make effective use of aircraft in warfare. Although hardware capabilities and operational tactics have changed over the years, many observations about the strategic importance of aircraft are still valid today. The "Lanchester Equations" for battlefield attrition are based on a model that damage between opposing forces occurs primarily along lines of contact rather than in depth, which was representative of warfare when the book was written. Modeling combat using differential equations continues to be an aspect for theater level simulations in modern warfare. The analysis in the book represents a considerable improvement over the prevailing views at the time concerning the limited importance of aircraft in warfare.

Thhe Origin of Lanchester Equations

This is a reprint of the 1916 book by the inventor of the Lanchester equations. Here Lanchester advances his N-Square Law, which has become what we now refer to as Lanchester Equations. The interest of the book is its historical value, as better presentations are to be found elsewhere. There are other interesting portions of the book beyond the mathematics, such as "aeroplane versus dirigible." The book's value is as a historical record of both the advent of military aviation and military operations research.
