I found this book very informative especially for me as i am a novice regarding this history. First of all this was written by an englishman who painted a very balanced write-up. he presents the facts that the waffen ss morphed into a formidable military unit vs a bunch of murderers that most of us grew up on to believe by hollywood(you can guess the rest). second, this was written in 2003 & it is interesting to read another book written in 2011 called Surrender invites death. Surrender somewhat rips off chris bishop`s book but slants it the facts to reflect the WINNER`s PR All in all, i enjoyed this book for representing a unbiased view. This may not be popular but that`s the point. history books are written by winners but we should not ignore the losers`point of view or side of the story. Chris bishop corrects this. --By NiQ

Not impressed

Just got this, a 2003 edition by the way--it's a superficial glance at some Waffen units and some of their Western Front engagements, along with book jacket hype confusing the entire organization with Waffen combat units. My copy has muddy, poor-resolution b&w photos along with long outdated, stale information and repeats of standard errors. Better studies out there.

This is a good book!

This book is a good book as far as accounts of the SS go. The book is written so that non combatants can understand the realities behind war for the very young soldiers of the Hitler Jugend while engaging the american army in Europe.

Economics of industrialization by a contemporary observer

Written in 1832, this book is a contemporary observer's account of how machinery and manufacturing helped create unprecedented prosperity during the Industrial Revolution in England. The book is basically a text on economics as applied to manufacturing. It was intended for a lay audience, particularly ambitious factory workers. Much of the information that's cited in the book came from the author's direct observations in factories in Britain and on the Continent.

The first third of the book examines in detail the machines themselves, as examples of how machines increased productivity in various ways: by quickly making many copies of some object, by applying super-human forces to materials, by working faster than humans can, etc. This section will interest mainly historians of technology, although there are some curious tidbits; e.g., caterpillars that can be tricked into making lace (p. 94).

The author then considers factory management, which includes the importance of the division of labor, of minimizing waste, of good labor relations, etc.

The book closes with a discussion of the role of government in the economy; e.g., the effects of taxes, protectionist legislation, patents, setting standards, etc.

The author, Charles Babbage (1792-1871), designed the world's first true programable computer. His ideas were a century ahead of his time; e.g., he speculates about hydrofoils (p. 41), seismographs (p. 75), the use of computers in generating tables of mathematical data (p. 162), the centralized distribution of motive power (p. 228), and the possibility of extraterrestrial life (p. 301).

He repeatedly argues that labor's and management's interests are not inherently opposed. Thus, he argues against both unions and cartels (Ch. 30, 31). In Ch. 26 - citing the example of some mines in Cornwall - he urges profit-sharing in order to motivate workers to help raise the productivity of their companys.

The book has some shortcomings: The prose is dull, pedantic. There's no table of contents nor index. The editing is sloppy: there are too many typos, and in several places, spaces between words are missing; e.g., "...beclearlyperceived, byimagingasociety, inwhichoccupation[s]..." (p. 260). Chapter 32 is titled "23".

However, the book will interest historians who seek a contemporary's account of the Industrial Revolution as it surged around him.

undervalued and cogent

a brilliant and undervalued work. the concepts of cost and efficiency are so well illustrated. this book's thesis: a modest structural change=a vast change in output. it would have been nice if babbage had identified the converse these, that a slight diminution in output=serious structural defect. which aptly describes this nosediving farce of a country, what with its wonderful lib-scum great society ('get votes, to hell with tomorrow') politics. this country is doomed.
another corollary of babbage's thesis (or rather, a corollary of the converse): the police state, the endless wars--these are concomitants of left wing scum spending. hipsters should read this. but they won't, 'cuz they're hipsters
not that right wingers in this country are much better. (but they're not really right wingers. but i digest.)

Pearl Zane Grey (1872 – 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his bestselling book. In addition to the success of his printed works, they later had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. As of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on his novels and short stories.

A rousing high adventure

Zane Grey pulled out all the stops on this tale of chasing wild mustangs, buffalo hunts, cougar hunts, and wild musk-ox. Follow the tale of a rag-tag band of plainsmen led by Col. Jones. A feisty, tough old man who will stop at nothing so he can rope (yes I said rope) a wild cougar and bring it back home. They are a breed of men whose resilience and spirit are the stuff of pioneers and mountain men. The kind of indomitable spirit that won the west, and is the subject of much of America's folklore. Along the way they endure seventy degree below zero blizzards, desert dust storms, starving Indians, and a harsh, yet pristine wilderness of incredible beauty. Zane Grey s depiction of panoramic landscapes such as the Grand Canyon is picturesque. One can almost smell the forest's and sense the loneliness of the wilderness. A great read that was hard to put down. Now for my next task which won't be easy. Picking out the next Zane Grey novel to get lost in.

Mountain Lions in Arizona, c.1908

This book is an outstanding true account of a trip made by Zane Grey and a plainsman, Buffalo Jones - one of the last. Jones was a famous sportsmen in North America at the turn of the 20th century and Grey a famous author of adventure stories. Unlike many of Grey's fictional novels of the old west, this is an account of a trip made to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon about 1908, for the purpose of tracking and capturing mountain lions. In those days, the North Rim was famous for the number and size of cougars - one mentioned in the book was 10' long, tip of tail to nape of neck, and weighed 300 pounds. The story is riveting with many details of the Arizona high desert and Grand Canyon areas of that era and gives a wonderful account of the Ponderosa Pine forest now known as the Kaibab National Forest. The details given about the behavior of the mountain lion are well worth finding a copy of this classic work. Grey includes a chapter (XV) entitled "Jones on Cougars", in which he relates the wisdom of this plainsman on the species - gained through a long life in the wilderness including a sojourn as a game warden in the Yellowstone National Park, where he captured numerous cougars alive and killed seventy-two. Although modern views of the mountain lion seem to consider this animal more like an oversized, undomesticated sort of house cat, after reading this book you will definitely treat them with appropriate dignity and caution.

Buffalo Bill, Watch Out

When Zane Grey met Buffalo Jones in New York City in 1908 Zane Grey instinctively knew he had met someone special. And the two men remained friends until Jones' death many years later. This book recounts only a small portion of the plainsman's life, but what is provided relates to us the life of an adventurer, an empire builder, and a conservationalist. Included are stories of the man's trying to rope lions in the Grand Canyon and to his attempt to preserve the last of the buffalo from extinction, after once having slaughtered them to provide meat for the railroad workers. When this book was first published it did not receive very good reviews, but has since been praised for Zane Grey's prose and narrative skills. Furthermore, the people Zane Grey met on this trip with Jones led directly to his creation of such great novels as Heritage of the Desert and Riders of the Purple Sage and set the stage for his entire career. Without this trip and the writing of this book there might not have been a Zane Grey as we know him today. It all began here.

great summary of Kacheloefen, if only all the text were there

In all fairness, I have not tried to work this issue out with Amazon yet, but I ordered the kindle version of this book and for some reason, the last word and a half of each line is cut off. I tried to adjust view settings, margins, font sizes on my reader, but nothing worked. From the information that is legible, however, the book is a valuable summary of the history, function and materiality of kacheloefen, a subject on which information is otherwise difficult to find. Accompanying diagrams are a bit underwhelming, but they convey the information successfully nonetheless.

I recommend buying an actual copy as opposed to the kindle version, which I would have done, but I have a presentation due on the material next week, and the lead time is several weeks for a paper version.

Four-time Formula One Drivers' Champion Alain Prost is one of the best racing drivers of all time.
Having discovered karting at the age of 14 during a family holiday, Prost progressed through motorsport's junior ranks, winning the French and European Formula Three championships, before joining the McLaren Formula One team in 1980 at the age of 24. In his six seasons with McLaren, Alain Prost won 30 races and three driving titles and in 1985 he became the first French World Champion. In 1986 he became the first back-to-back champion since Jack Brabham 26 years earlier. In 1987, his 28th Grand Prix victory beat Jackie Stewart's 14-year-old record.

one of the best drivers in Formula 1

A really well written book about, I think, one of the best drivers in Formula 1.
It seemed to deal with his life in a very measured and correct way. There has been so much controversy about This man but I felt the book dealt with it in the best way possible as you heard from the other drivers, the managers and perhaps most importantly, the mechanics. All was positive.
I would highly recommend this book and also the amazing photography.

A small dissapointment...

Beware: this is a coffee table book (as one can see by the square format of the book). I knew that.

I knew the photos would be the strong point (and they are indee good - not spectacular, but good). But I did not think that the text would be so weak. Instead of a text completely written by seasoned journalist Maurice Hamilton, all we have are excerpts from interviews,

About the Author
Arthur Waley was a distinguished authority on Chinese and Japanese language and literature. He translated many poems and novels from these languages. He was honoured many times for his work by the Chinese and received the Queen's medal for poetry in 1953. His work includes Chinese Poems, Japanese Poetry, The Tale of Genji and Monkey, the translation of a sixteenth-century Chinese novel, which was turned into a major BBC television series.

Fine collection superseded

Arthur Waley is the most famous Sinologist this century, the man (other than Ezra Pound) who has done most in bringing Chinese poetry to the fore of Western public. Hence, no matter what, Waley's historical importance cannot be overestimated. And he is a competent all-round translator too, as this fine anthology demonstrates, one who has an uncanny ear of transforming Chinese rhythms and rhymes into naturalized English metrics.
Yet in the final analysis, most of Waley's work has been superseded by finer translations from Hinton and Watson. His English now strikes one with a certain archness (if still deceptively simple) which gives a somewhat falsified idea of the Chinese; in Li Po and Tu Fu, for example, his reproduction of their tone is uneven, seldom showing their difference in temperament or use of diction (incidentally, in Chinese one _can_ see the subtle differences in how either works). At times he "stretches out" Tu's metrics, making him less than succinct, or slurs over his use of an image.
Yet in his favorite poet Po Chu-I Waley does very well. Here is when his obvious talent in phrasing tastefully does the poet justice. Elsewhere, even if Waley can be faulted here and there, he is still very close lexically to the original.
To conclude, Waley's anthology is still worth getting, especially if you enjoy his translations. But supplementing it with either Watson's or Hinton's texts would probably give you a better idea of some poets.

A Sampler of Ancient Chinese Poetry

Kenneth Rexroth cited this book of translations in his "One Hundred Poems from the Chinese" as among a handful that are outstanding sources for those interested in Chinese poetry. I love the directness of the old Chinese poets, particularly their simplicity and accessibility -- at least as they have been translated today by people such as Rexroth. Those same qualities can be found in Waley's translations, where they have a seductively "commonplace" feel that both belies and accentuates their delicacy.
What I hadn't been prepared for, however, were Waley's introductory essays which were, like the poetry he translated, direct and unpretentious and , so, wonderfully informative.
Waley was one of the very first Westerners to undertake translations of ancient Chinese poetry, so, quite apart from the beauty of his work, he also holds an important position historically. This particular volume was first published in 1919.

Refreshing the roots of the mind.

Waley, who was one of the great Sinologists of the twentieth century, translated a wide variety of Eastern works but is perhaps best known for his translations of Chinese poetry. His '170 Chinese Poems,' a book which contains, among other riches, the marvelous poems of T'ao Ch'ien, Po Chu-I, and Wang Wei, has been reissued many times. And although we have seen other very fine translations of Chinese poetry from writers as diverse as A. C. Graham, Kenneth Rexroth, and Gary Snyder, none of them have had the impact of Waley. Chinese poetry, for many, is and always will mean Arthur Waley. His influence has been enormous.
I would attribute his success to two things. In the first place, there is the very special quality of his English, a quality impossible to describe. In the second place, Waley was a master at evoking an atmosphere, a feeling tone, that strikes one as authentically Chinese. So good was he at this that one sometimes gets the feeling, as one does when reading the poems of that other remarkable and far greater genius, the poet Emily Dickinson, a woman whose mind also had a very Chinese cast, that they must have been Chinese souls who had somehow strayed and ended up reincarnating in Western bodies.
My remark about Emily Dickinson's 'Chinese-ness' may raise some eyebrows. Perhaps it takes a certain amount of exposure to Eastern culture, particularly to Buddhist thought, to see this quality in her, but I find it everywhere. I find it, for example, in lines such as these, slightly adjusted since they should be set out as poetry :
"I cross till I am weary / A Mountain - in my mind - / More Mountains - then a Sea - / More Seas - And then / A Desert find -" (J550).
It is into this strange dreamscape in which a solitary figure moves through a vast, enigmatic, obstacle-filled, wearying land that, a few lines later, "Asiatic Rains" arrive to work their effect.
Perhaps it might not be too fanciful to suggest that the rains from the East which bring relief, and even understanding, to Emily Dickinson's persona in poem J550 can be equated with Waley's poems, poems which drifted through the Chinese sky of his mind to bring something needful to the "Desert" of the modern Western sensibility. Perhaps this was the real reason for his great success - he brought something that was missing from the mechanized and arid Western spirit, something that we all inwardly yearn for that has been lost in the West but that the Eastern tradition can provide in abundance.
I don't know, but whatever the case, Waley's Chinese poems do have a truly magical effect on all readers. Once you have been exposed to them you can never forget them.
The particular beauty of Waley's style, a style which despite its age still strikes one as modern, can be seen in a poem such as Po Chu-I's 'Passing T'ien-men Street in Ch'ang-an and Seeing a Distant View of Chung-nan Mountain,' a poem which has always been one of my favorites. It reads:
"The snow has gone from Chung-nan; spring is almost come. / Lovely in the distance its blue colours, against the brown of the streets. / A thousand coaches, ten thousand horsemen pass down the Nine Roads; / Turns his head and looks at the mountains, - not one man!"
Here is the infinitely precious color and marvel of a Nature that is blazing with life and beauty and consciousness, sadly set over against a busy-ness that is also ours, an obsession and total involvement exclusively with people and their multifarious doings that blinds us - a mindset that leads us to overlook the universe, to pass it by like Po Chu-I's horsemen without even noticing it.
Waley's Chinese poems captivate us. They are a gentle rain which trickles down to bathe and refresh the roots of our mind. I envy those who are coming to them for the first time.

HYSTERICAL

These CD's are clips from many of the past shows. Some are so funny, I had tears running down my face! It is a mix of radio call in's, newsy items, and just the wonderful banter of "Click and Clack". It is such a pleasure to listen to such quick-witted replies.

Hilarious -- even if you aren't a car person!

Even if you aren't a car person (and I am not! Know nothing about them!), you will love Car Talk. The Tappet brothers are so funny as they respond to calls about cars which always lead to hilarious conversations about relationships and life in general. This is an excellent program! It is smart, warm and so funny! No wonder it was on NPR for so many years! You will laugh out loud!

My husband and I love to listen to these guys when we go on road trips, they are so funny. This was really good. We're sorry Tommy is gone, but hope they will take previous shows and put them on CD to listen to.

There is no subject upon which the American public should be better informed, and none, perhaps, in which it should feel greater pride, than in that of the foremost invention of the age, the Electric Telegraph; f6r aside from the fact that three of the best systems in use are American inventions, and that to our countrymen is due the credit of producing the first successful recording electric telegraph, it is more generally used in this country than in any other, and probably more than in all others combined, for the common convenience of mankind.

In Europe, with the exception of Great Britain, the use of the telegraph is almost wholly under the control of the governments, and its use restricted by the high rates of tolls to the wealthier classes, while in this country it is alike open to all, and telegraphic despatches are "household words" among the poorer as well as the wealthier citizens.

Good historical reference of very early telegraph.

This is a "must have" book if you have any interest in early land-line telegraph. George B. Prescott wrote this book in the early 1860's, so there aren't any photographs - there are several beautiful hand drawings included (as one would expect from a book from this period.) This book, plus American Telegraphy & Encyclopedia of the Telegraph (W.M.Maver) for me are the definitive references for this facet of American telegraph history, prior to the Spark Gap Era...

A well written history of the electric telegraph....

This is an extensively researched, well written, and comprehensive story of the electric telegraph. Given that there are a handful of people in the world who would enjoy a seemingly boring subject as this, I applaud Mr. Prescott's dedication to this work. My career as a telecommunications technician now makes more sense thanks to this work. In fact, this work illustrates the foundation upon which all of our modern communications is built upon. My only minor wish (and the reason for withholding the fifth star) is that there were more diagrams, tables, and illustrations to serve as examples to more laypeople. For those few of us who care about such matters, I salute you Mr. Prescott. Well done, sir.

About the Author
Walter Benjamin was a German-Jewish Marxist literary critic, essayist, translator, and philosopher. He was at times associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory and is the author of Illuminations, The Arcades Project, and The Origin of German Tragic Drama.

Esther Leslie is a lecturer in English and Humanities at Birkbeck College, London. She is the author of Walter Benjamin: Overpowering Conformism and sits on the editorial boards of Historical Materialism, Radical Philosophy and Revolutionary History.

A Book of Books

It's always wonderful to look into a book or magazine that consists largely of photographs of pages from other books, partly because nothing photographs better,and partly because you are seeing the page in something both like and unlike its native habitat, like an animal in the better kind of zoo.

Because the texts are presented this way, as photographs of autographs (notebooks, postcards, trial drafts of essays, collected photographs with notations), the distance between reader and author is inescapable. Often, when we see a famous text (sometimes,e.g when it's newly translated into contemporary language), we will remark on how contemporary the story feels, how the writer, long dead, feels like someone you know or could know. But with pages like these, the patina of time is present, and so is all of the strangeness of the writer, as much as is left. There's nothing like a trip to the archives to get your bearings relative to a writer; to locate him/her in time, and to feel the presence of time, both as the writer felt it in gathering these scraps together, and as you feel it now.

My favorite image from Benjamin's writing is the Angel of History, who is pinned in the air, blown back and upright by a wind from Paradise (from the Beginning), while all the garbage of every passing moment piles up at her feet. Something like a librarian. Being the angel of history makes movement difficult if not impossible, even when you have to leave Germany to save your life. You can read about that, but it's wonderful to have a chance to see pages from those books. If you're a Benjamin completionist, you will need to buy this book, but even if all you've read are the essays in Arendt's little collection, you will enjoy the added sense of the presence and loss of their author, just the same.

If you are a devoted fan of Walter Benjamin, then it is essential. On the other hand, if you are like me---who has never read Mr. Benjamin's works ---then it won't be such a useful purchase.

Without a flowing textual narrative, this book provides detailed examples of the scraps and notes kept by Mr. Benjamin, who was a compulsive hoarder of all mundane things tied to his highly intellectual pursuits during most of the first half of the last century

Imagination Required

This book is best used by someone who has the ability to mentally conceptualize the various mechanical concepts contained therein. Although there are a very wide variety of devices illustrated, most of them leave their specific operation up to the imagination of the reader because of the minimal descriptions offered. Having said that, this book is not meant to be a specific design aid, but rather a means to introduce the reader to the overall concept of the devices covered. And that it does quite well, although there is a possibility that most people who buy this book may very well feel that there is something lacking. I, myself, do not regret buying this book.
