Bob tells how, through Apollo's lunar landing, NASA clearly met both President Kennedy's goal to overcome the Soviets' leadership image and James Webb's goal to use Apollo as a major part of his program to demonstrate U.S. technological preeminence.
Apparent throughout this report is the outstanding competence and capability of the NASA organization in its Centers and Headquarters. The Agency's leadership was clearly committed to providing the budget and other requirements to achieve the clearly defined program goals. The major progress in establishing the mission flight system elements and facility infrastructure was started under NASA's first administrator, Keith Glennan, well before the Apollo mission was defined. This report shows the major new capabilities that were required in this still-new organization to achieve this objective--operational Field Centers; entirely new facility capabilities; the technology development and equipment base; the organizational strengths, including the integrated management systems; and overall in-house competence in all of the necessary areas even while the Agency relied heavily on significant outside contractor and university capabilities to implement many of the required functions. Ultimate responsibility always remained within the NASA organization. The lunar landing was an outstanding achievement that met all its goals.

A very sad story

The copy I have is a pre-release copy, which as I understand it has no strings attached. I haven’t finished this book but want to say a little about it now. More later, … perhaps.

Ezra Pound: Poet: Volume III: The Tragic Years 1939-1972 by A. David Moody is a biography about a part of the life of Ezra Pound; it shows the part of his life during World War two and a little after. His life was, as I understand it, filled with time spent with people who changed some of the art of writing; Pound too seems to have contributed to the change.

I like the book; it reminded me of the people who lived during part of my lifetime; and I remember hearing about Ezra Pound although I don’t remember hearing his work read. Also biographies are one of my favorite kinds of books; and this seems to me to be a good one. His work seems sad; his biography tragic, in my thinking.

Ezra Pound’s wartime broadcasts from Italy are a problem; they apparently caused him problems too. But it seems that this sort of problem ought not be ignored or hidden; our history as human beings is often sad or even evil but that is part of the whole of our being. Whether or not Pound’s broadcasts were misguided or sinful or evil I don’t know but the story is, I think, important to tell and the author tells it well in my opinion. So, I recommend this book highly; it is very interesting reading.

Mary Barton is the first novel by English author Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1848. The story is set in the English city of Manchester between 1839 and 1842, and deals with the difficulties faced by the Victorian lower class. It is subtitled 'A Tale of Manchester Life'.The novel begins in Manchester, where we are introduced to the Bartons and the Wilsons, two working-class families. John Barton is a questioner of the distribution of wealth and the relations between rich and poor. Soon his wife dies—he blames it on her grief over the disappearance of her sister Esther. Having already lost his son Tom at a young age, Barton is left to raise his daughter, Mary, alone and now falls into depression and begins to involve himself in the Chartist, trade-union movement.

Mary takes up work at a dressmaker's (her father having objected to her working in a factory) and becomes subject to the affections of hard-working Jem Wilson and Harry Carson, son of a wealthy mill owner. She fondly hopes, by marrying Carson, to secure a comfortable life for herself and her father, but immediately after refusing Jem's offer of marriage she realises that she truly loves him. She therefore decides to evade Carson, planning to show her feelings to Jem in the course of time. Jem believes her decision to be final, though this does not change his feelings for her.

Meanwhile, Esther, a "street-walker," returns to warn John Barton that he must save Mary from becoming like her. He simply pushes her away, however, and she's sent to jail for a month on the charge of vagrancy. Upon her release she talks to Jem with the same purpose. He promises that he will protect Mary and confronts Carson, eventually entering into a fight with him, which is witnessed by a policeman passing by.

During the trial, Jem learns of Mary's great love for him. Will arrives in court to testify, and Jem is found 'not guilty'. Mary has fallen ill during the trial and is nursed by Mr Sturgis, an old sailor, and his wife. When she finally returns to Manchester she has to face her father, who is crushed by his remorse. He summons John Carson, Harry's father, to confess to him that he is the murderer. Carson is still set on justice, but after turning to the Bible he forgives Barton, who dies soon afterwards in Carson's arms. Not long after this Esther comes back to Mary's home, where she, too, soon dies.

Jem decides to leave England, where, his reputation damaged, it would be difficult for him to find a new job. The novel ends with the wedded Mary and Jem, their little child, and Mrs Wilson living happily in Canada. News comes that Margaret has regained her sight and that she and Will, soon to be married, will visit.

A passionate, powerful tale of poverty and injustice

This is possibly the most devastating, yet uplifting novels I've ever read. The book explores the lives of the working class poor in Manchester, England, during the 1840s, a period of strife and hunger. The pretty, young, naive Mary Barton persues a romance with handsome, dashing Harry Carson, son the mill owner, while spurning the attentions of her childhood friend, Jem Wilson, who loves her passionately. Mary's intentions, however, are less than noble; while certainly attracted to Harry, she wishes to improve the lot of herself and her father, John, who, disconsolate over the loss of his wife and only son and the attendant poverty after the loss of his job, has slipped into a daze of opium and seeks vengeance against the Carsons for putting him into this position. This eventually leads to tragedy and redemption. Gaskell writes as if her life depended on it; she describes the horrible conditions of the Manchester poor with searing vision, and makes the influence of radicalism completely understandable, even if she doesn't always agree with it. The delineation of character is quite remarkable; one's heart beats faster as Mary realises who it is she really loves and particularly when she is forced to protect, against incredible odds, both of the men that truly love her. Admittedly, the second half of the book, detailing the murder and subsequent trial, is quite melodramatic, but it's grippingly told. A magnificent work that should be required reading.

A Truthful Depiction of the 19th Century Working Class Life

Actually I read this book in three days' time (it can be even faster if I don't have to go to school). Anyway, Mrs. Gaskell's depiction of the working class people in Manchester during the 19th century was so vivid that you can just *see* and *feel* how the rich and the poor's lives were like back then by turning the pages. I believe no one who had read this book will not to some extent feel pity for the tragic hero, John Barton, in the story. But aside from this formal social theme being presented in the novel, there is also a very strong sense of religious/moral theme in it (espeically near the end of the story), as well as some drama and romance in it. Definitely worth a read, especially to those who are interested in Victorian Literature.

The reviewer above must not know much about Victorian Condition of England novels. Mary Barton is one of the premier novels of this genre detailing the lives of ordinary working class poor in Manchester during the height of the industrial revolution. Mrs. Gaskell lived in Manchester and writes about what she saw with a keen eye and understanding of the workers' plight. If you're looking for bodice-ripping buy something else. If you want a picture of life in England circa 1840 that isn't Dickens, try Mary Barton.

About the Author
John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. He attended Harrow and trained as a barrister at New College, Oxford. Although called to the bar in 1890, rather than practise law, Galsworthy travelled extensively and began to write.

It was as a playwright Galsworthy had his first success. His playslike his most famous work, the series of novels comprising The Forsyte Sagadealt primarily with class and the social issues of the day, and he was especially harsh on the class from which he himself came.

A book with rare and unique information

This little book is about 100 years old, but it is a rare gem that you won't find easily. It's a truly wonderful craftsman's manual on how to make victorian-style concrete pottery---the kind that you would see in a beautiful victorian garden or mansion. Although very old, it's filled with photo demonstrations and diagrams of exactly what to do. It shows beautifully crafted planters with ornate relief work and the craftsman's techniques of making it. The book is a how-to book. I have never seen another book like this. I am surprised that it has not been republished, because there are a lot of people out there who have an interest in making things at home for their own garden, and garden ornaments and potter are becoming more and more popular. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

New Insights and the Old Magic

If you're into academic writing on Harry Potter, you're not likely to find a stronger or more enjoyable collection. It includes a wide variety of essays, ranging from thick and scholarly to warm-hearted and fun. Highlights:

-a revised and updated version of Kathryn McDaniel's "The Elfin Mystique," which is a feminist take on house-elves that I had personally been meaning to track down and read for years
-beautiful character essays on Lupin and the Weasley twins
-Hayley and Michael Burson's nostalgic "Surviving the Potter-pocalypse," for those of us who miss our daily dose of fandom a little too much
-intriguing thought pieces on Kendra Dumbledore and Native American heritage, Dumbledore's Army and the White Rose Society, and John Locke and the Order of the Phoenix
-and a variety of keen insights throughout, more than I can mention.

To be fair, I'm right square in the middle of the target audience, and yes, I mean nerd (disclosure: I wrote for the first one [which is also worth a read, in my opinion ;)], and in internet terms I know several of these writers.) But for all the academic reading I've done on the subject of Harry Potter, I found this collection had an impressive amount of new things to say to me. When you're reading along about family ties and you catch your breath because you never saw the force of Arabella Figg's love for Harry before, well--for me, that was a trace of the old magic. Now I want to revisit several of these essays and then read the entire Potter series again ...

Brings issues explored by Rowling right into modern and historical context

This collection of essays is great for anyone who loves J.K. Rowling's fantastic achievement. It really highlights how scholars such as historians and political scientists use their insight and techniques to reveal dimensions of our own society by delving into Rowling's complex and deep portrayal of characters through their epic struggle. The numerous authors of the individual chapters have a variety of topics, viewpoints, and writing styles, but it all holds together very well. I especially like the update on the house elves cast in the light of The Real Housewives as well as the work on the White Rose Society. It's really cool how these articles explore the power of the powerless and relate them to real world issues that are historical as well as current. Some of the extras, such as the video extras and webinairs are simple, but such good discussions, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat and listening more than once.

Big Ideas about Potter In Accessible Language = Pleasure to Read

I have a decent sized collection of Harry Potter books. Almost all of them that are not Bloomsbury or Scholastic copies of the seven books are guides to how to best understand JKR's schoolboy stories. A fair number of these are anthologies of academic essays written for other scholars and egghead fans.

The best of the lot so far have been the two gathered by Travis Prinzi: Hogshead Conversations and Harry Potter For Nerds 1. Prinzi, unlike the usual editor of such collections, prefers big ideas and bold arguments written in language and paragraphs aimed at clarity and access rather than in the usual professorial class jargon. The combination of courage and plain speech is my strong preference.

Harry Potter For Nerds 2, edited by Kathryn McDaniel and Prinzi this time, has the virtues of its predecessor and the added value of being up to date, even topical. The chapters on the twins, Quidditch, ghosts, Squibs, and House-elves were wonderfully out there and well argued; the second section's pieces on veracity and work in Harry Potter and its discussions of historical background (Native America, White Rose Society) and genre expanded my thinking on Rowling's characters and stories.

That's all I ask from an essay collection like this. I'm also happy when the physical book itself is attractive and formatted so that it is a pleasure to read, which this one is. I look forward already to 'For Nerds 3.'

Kept Me Glued to my Kindle

This was my first Max Brand book, and I had no idea what to expect or even what the book was about when I picked it up. I'm so glad I did! Way of the Lawless is a Western which kept me up way past my bedtime - it's so riveting I had a hard time finding a good stopping place. The characters are well developed, even the minor ones. The story is well-written and moves along at a fast clip. The ending - well, I usually have a book completely figured out halfway through, but the ending caught me completely off guard. Adventure, (clean) romance, humor, personal reflection, this book has it all. I can't wait to read more of Max Brand's books.

With an ending that only Max could write!

Frederick Schiller Faust wrote under 19 different pen names, the most popular being Max Brand. He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed.
This is one of his best novels, violet, yet powerful with an ending that only Max could write. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.

Max Brand wrote variety into his books. Characters are different, have different points of view, different actions and ways of expressing themselves -- but all of them captivate the reader, and this book does the same. I love the guy and wish he had lived to be 100. Anything that has his name on it is well worth reading. pay attention and you will learn lots about the wild, wild West!

A heavyweight champion past its prime

Knight's is indeed the professional standard omnibus for seamanship. It is an excellent comprehensive text for any mariner. That said, it is desperately in need of updating. The electronic navigation section lists systems no longer in use (Omega, LORAN), and treats GPS as a "future" system (although the editors do prophetically write that GPS receivers will drop in price until they are affordable by the average mariner).
Additionally,there are a disconcerting number of typographical errors present. I can only hope the editors are progressing on a 19th Edition.

Excellent! Best single text book for Master's Exam.

Best overview of professional seamanship. This book goes leagues beyond novice publications such as "Chapmans" and "Annapolis". The book begins with simple principles and builds the basic vocabulary as it progresses. It's easy to understand with good photos and illustrations. Great study text for the masters exam. Electronics section obviously outdated.

Essential Reference

This book is in the pilothouse of every ship in the US Navy. 'Nuff said.
I find it useful as a basic reference, for vocabulary, and for filling the gaps that Bowditch leaves.
The chapters are well laid out, the information is well indexed, and topics proceed logically. The illustrations are clear and useful.
