Crossing the Deadly Ground: United States Army Tactics, 1865-1899, by Perry D. Jamieson

Weapons improved rapidly after the Civil War, raising difficult questions about the battle tactics employed by the United States Army. The most fundamental problem was the dominance of the tactical defensive, when defenders protected by fieldworks could deliver deadly fire from rifles and artillery against attackers advancing in close-ordered lines. The vulnerability of these offensive forces as they crossed the so-called "deadly ground" in front of defensive positions was even greater with the improvement of armaments after the Civil War.

Review
"No other study approaches this subject so expertly."--Journal of Southern History

"Jamieson fills a gap in the tactical history of the U.S. Army from the end of the Civil War through the Spanish-American War. He unfolds how an army spread out on frontier posts, [and] largely preoccupied with warfare against the native peoples, Reconstruction, and daily routine, nevertheless made progress toward a system of tactics to take it into the twentieth century."--Civil War History

"An excellent history of the period, one frequently neglected in the literature of the military history field."--Academic Library Book Review

US Army enter the world of modern combat
By A Customer
Jamieson, et al. have done a very good job of trying to come to grips with the one of the hottest topics in military histroy - the way that armies in the late 19th Century attempted to cope with technological innovation and newer, more destructive weapons. Additionally they cover that most peculiarly American of all military campaigns, the Indian Wars, with an intelligence and incisiveness that I have not seen anywhere else - forget about the glorious charges of the Saturday matinee! My only gripe with this book is that it relies too heavily on letting the factual material speak for itself. A greater degree on analysis would have made the book longer, but it would have made it better too. Overall, it is a welcome addition to the growing literature on the revolution in military affairs which was taking place at the time, and it serves as a reminder at our own 'fin de siecle', about the continuing need for new ideas in military tactics.

ESSENTIAL FOR THE MILITARY HISTORIAN
By John M. Lane
This is a review of CROSSING THE DEADLY GROUND: UNITED STATES ARMY TACTICS 1865-1899 by Perry D. Jamieson. The author is a historian with the U.S. Air Force History Program at Bolling Air Force Base in the District of Columbia. My copy was published by the University of Alabama Press in 1994.

Jamieson writes well and knows how to interpret such rare original sources as military manuals. He includes information about cavalry as well as infantry and artillery.

I live near the Custer Battlefield in southeastern Montana and have found his book useful in understanding some aspects of Custer's famous Last Stand. Custer's second in command, Major Reno, for example, was subjected to harsh criticism for dismounting his small force and fighting on foot.

Jamieson notes, however, that this was standard operating procedure and that the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors who defeated Custer also typically dismounted when they fired. The fact that none of Custer's command carried a saber is a further indication of how rare mounted charges were. For the Plains Indians, the lance was the preferred weapon for mounted combat, not the firearm.

There's a good reason for this. A man on horseback can't hit anything with a firearm unless the muzzle is practically touching the target.

Reno also faced the prospect of having to charge through a prairie dog town and a defilade which had been formed when the Little Bighorn River changed course. It was filling up with warriors as Reno charged.

I've found this book to be invaluable as a reference tool and recommend it to anyone interested in military history especially during the second half of the 19th century. This book seems to be overlooked by historians and it's widely available at bargain prices. It's well worth having as an investment in addition to the information it presents. When supplies get tighter, it's sure to go up in price.

Get a copy while you can. You'll be glad you did.
