A shop manual, not ideal for the amateur.

If you're looking for an automotive repair manual in the spirit of a Chilton's or a Haynes manual, this is not the book for you. This is strictly a shop service manual, which means that it lists work flows, parts numbers, and tool numbers that are useful to experienced mechanics who have ALL the tools. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only repair manual that exists for the Quattro version of 84-87 Audi 4000 S and CS models. If you own one of the models covered in other manuals (non-quattro versions) you may want to buy that in addition to, or instead of this manual. Otherwise, as a shop repair manual, this book gets the job done and is complete.

The only repair manual you should want.

This is the repair manual you want if you are going to be working on the car yourself. It gives details on the repair that help you plan and perform the task. If you don't know how to check your oil or inspect your brakes then a Chilton or Haynes is more your speed. Those manuals can't offer the detail that a Bentley Factory Repair Manual offers. The Bentley Service Manuals are a different story though and fortunately this is not one. The Chilton and Haynes manuals try to lump a bunch of different models into one repair write up. The Bentley Factory Manual is going to cover all different set-ups seperately. I would say if you can generally take things apart and put them back together on your own then you need a Bentley Repair Manual. If you are not that mechanically inclined then maybe a Haynes or Chilton would be more your speed.

I would also recommend that you have this repair manual even if you do not work on cars yourself because it could sure help you out of a jam if you breakdown out of town and Bubba has never even seen an Audi before. Keep it in your car!

I would have given the manual 5 stars but I think there are a few small areas missing and a few quirks to the organisation which were fixed in Bentley's that were written after this one. My background is Automotive Technician and Mechanical Engineer.

It's about the cars, right??

I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

During the past three years a large number of investigations have been under way at the Structural Materials Research Laboratory, Lewis Institute, Chicago, which throw considerable new light on the subject of proportioning concrete. These investigations are being carried out through the cooperation of the Institute and the Portland Cement Association.- These studies have covered an investigation of the inter-relation of the following factors:

1. The consistency (quantity of mixing water).

2. The size and grading of aggregates.

3. The mix (proportion of cement).

Any comprehensive study of proportioning concrete must take into account all of these factors.

During this period about 50,000 tests have been carried out which have a bearing on this subject. These tests have been largely confined to compression tests of concrete and mortars. These investigations have given us a new insight into the factors which underlie the correct proportioning of concrete mixtures and show the limitations of older methods. Certain phases of these investigations are still under way.

The following may be mentioned as among the most important principles which have been established with reference to the design of concrete mixtures. In a brief report of this kind it is impracticable to present more than an outline of the methods of applying the principles to practical problems. In only a few instances are experimental data given on which these conclusions are based.

1. With given concrete materials and conditions of test the quantity of mixing water used determines the strength of the concrete, so long as the mix is of a workable plasticity.

2. The sieve analysis furnishes the only correct basis for proportioning aggregates in concrete mixtures.

3. A simple method of measuring the effective size and grading of an aggregate has been developed. This gives rise to a function known as the "fineness modulus" of the aggregate.

4. The fineness modulus of the aggregate furnishes a rational method for combining materials of different size for concrete mixtures.

5. The sieve analysis curve of the aggregate may be widely different in form without exerting any influence on the concrete strength.

6. Aggregate of equivalent concrete-making qualities may be produced by an infinite number of different gradings of a given material.

7. Aggregates of equivalent concrete-making qualities may be produced materials of widely different size and grading.

8. In general, fine and coarse aggregates of widely different size or grading can be combined in such a manner as to produce similar results in concrete.

9. The aggregate grading which produces the strongest concrete is not that giving the maximum density (lowest voids). A grading coarser than that giving maximum density is necessary for highest concrete strength.

10. The richer the mix, the coarser the grading should be for an aggregate of given maximum size; hence, the greater the discrepancy between maximum density and best grading.

Any one who works in the concrete industry uses the work of Duff Abrams, this is the research which solidified that the water/cement ratio as the dictating factor in concrete's compressive strength. Your room is ready

I'll admit a little bias here, as I'm the editor who originally acquired this book for the Object Lessons series; but I'm not biased in the sense that when I received this manuscript I was completely surprised and delighted by it (I was not familiar with Walsh's writing before working with her on this project). The book is utterly unique, and therefore it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But if you are interested in hotels as strange spaces, human relationships as sites of struggle and negotiation, and/or creative nonfiction—then this book is a definite must read.

What a fun read! It's a reflection on the breakup of the author's marriage, a meditation on the new media economy, and a thought-piece on how we experience hotels. Highly recommended -- alongside the rest of the "Object Lessons" books -- as a terrific gift idea.

Great Resource on Beat Generation

Books in Backbeat Books FAQ series are a little different to review than a more conventionally formatted book. By definition books in the FAQ series are more of a resource guide, like the internet analog of a series of common questions on a subject with a quick fact filled summation of the question at hand, and Rich Weidman’s provides exactly that some succinct information in “The Beat Generation FAQ”.

If you’re a fan of The Beats (such as I am) and their writings you may think you know everything on this literary movement, but Weidman has done his homework and has information that is previously unknown or lesser known, such as the influence of hobo writers such as Jack Black, author of “You Can’t Win” (1936). There are chapters on both the major and minor players in The Beats story, the major personalities such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S, Burroughs, Gregory Corso et al, as well as minor characters such as Herbert Hunke. “The Beat Generation FAQ” delves into the mostly overlooked group in The Beats, the women. Weidman gives them equal time with the men and which were as important to the group as the men, albeit more in ways of supporting the men and their ambitions but these group of women would later write their own books, not only of their time with the men of The Beat Generation but also their own artistic works.

Weidman also explores the process behind Kerouac’s, “On The Road”, which brought up some things I hadn‘t picked up on before. Ginsberg’s, “Howl”, and Burroughs‘, “Naked Lunch”. It also takes a look at the obscenity trial the publication of “Howl” elicited. It also delves into these writers body of work as a whole, if you need a quick overview of their work here it is. Weidman also gets into the reaction to The Beats from their detractors to those they influenced, i.e., Bob Dylan, The Doors, and their influence on other mediums of the day from exploitation movies made promising to expose ‘the inside story of The Beat Generation”, to the present day, which has seen films that are more historically accurate on incidents in The Beats world as well as films made of Kerouac’s “On The Road” and “Big Sur”.

A couple things that are minor shortcomings is that reading straight through and not as a reference source there are some redundancies. The other is that Weidman omits the death of Gerard Kerouac, Jack Kerouac’s older brother who died at age nine and affected Kerouac in his perspective on life and writing.

Overall “The Beat Generation FAQ” is a well written and informative look at The Beat Generation and whether you’re already an aficionado or are just getting into The Beats this is a book you’ll want to read. Rich Weidman is also the author of “The Doors FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Kings of Acid Rock (Faq Series).

This book was first published in the 1920 so it was written by people who had first hand knowledge of Panama before the Americans invested millions to improve sanitation on the isthmus.

These authors also interviewed and consulted people who had first hand or fresh anecdotal information of what Panama was like before America improved sanitation there and eliminated both malaria and yellow fever.

The scourge of Panama had long been malaria and yellow fever. Panama had such a bad reputation that some sea captains refused to take their ships there. Those diseases and very poor sanitation were the major issues that defeated the French attempt to build a canal.

Part of America's success was luck, fortuitous research conducted in Cuba and other places led to more knowledge and breakthroughs that were quickly implemented in Panama. They worked.

The workforce was stabilized as better trained men were now willing to work on the canal project.

The chart and working formulas have for the most part been developed independently by the author. Where the same or similar methods have been previously published, the fact is generally stated in the footnotes, but it has not been found possible to make these references absolutely complete.

The second part of the book is for reference and contains the derivation of the principal formulas used in connection with transmission lines. As many recent articles on transmission lines make use of formulas which are only roughly approximate, or are even incorrect, a reliable collection of formulas, with the method of obtaining them, should be found valuable.

It should not be presumed, because the second part of the book requires the use of the integral calculus, that the working formulas will require a knowledge of higher mathematics. The first five or six chapters are complete in themselves, and are planned for the use of those who have an ordinary acquaintance with alternating-current calculations.

A Wonderful Find

Transmission Line Formulas for Engineering Students. The title just drew me in! I'm glad I did. This book is a treasure trove of transmission line engineering equations and their derivations. Herbert Dwight is the author and the book was first published in 1913! I appreciate old engineering resources like this because they contain original thinking from a time when things were done by hand using a slide rule, log tables, and other references. The book predates the renowned Westinghouse Transmission Reference. It will make a great addition to your library!

Great book, but no English translations for the French parts

I am not the greatest at writing book reviews, so I will just say that Villette is an excellent book, but you shouldn't expect it to be just like Jane Eyre, although there are several parallels. If you liked Jane Eyre you might like this too, especially if you have experienced loneliness, unrequited love, and/or depression. It's less about plot than it is about the secretive narrator's mind. I took a break halfway through because it was very dense and slow going but I'm glad I read it. Mallory Ortberg's Introduction is also excellent and shed new light on the book for me. The cover art is lovely, a violet metallic on that cream pebbly paper, and the pages have deckle edges.
However, large portions of the book are in French with no English translation given. This really bogged me down as a reader because I never learned French and had to rely on the Google Translate app (it uses your smartphone camera to translate text in real time, so useful) and my limited knowledge of French and Italian words/grammar to understand what was going on. I really don't understand why they didn't include the English translations for the French conversations in footnotes. Even endnotes would have been helpful. I was quite disappointed at that. If I had known about the lack of English translations, I wouldn't have bought this edition. I'm not going to return the book since I did like it, but I wanted to warn you.

Beware the quiet ones

Villette is unlike any other 19th-century novel. It is at heart a metafiction, a 19c novel about 19c novels, and it is a satire whose primary target is the male reader (or the female reader who reads like a man) and who brings conventional expectations about novels and the wider world to reading this book. Matthew Arnold hated it; that should tell you something. I suspect Charlotte Bronte was partially inspired by Cervantes' Quixote, a reader driven delusional from reading romances; in fact, the final word of both novels is the same: farewell.

Lucy Snowe, Villette's first person narrator, is beyond "reserved"; one suspects that she not only wishes to melt into the wallpaper but BE the wallpaper; however, circumstances goad her to action. And because the underlying structure of the plot is comic, no matter how improbable Lucy's "happy ideas" are, they come to fruition. Lucy has a sharp eye always on the lookout for "interesting" characters and situations. For example, the Blanche Ingram character that Jane Eyre rails against emerges as the pretty and vacuous Ginevra Fanshawe who attaches herself to Lucy, or is "gummed" to her waist as Lucy puts it. (Lucy places pins strategically to mitigate the annoyance.) And unlike Blanche, Ginevra has remarkable staying power, occupying all three volumes of the novel. But as soon as characters lapse into conventional novelistic resolutions (marriage, death, or other demise) they lose Lucy's interest and drop out of the narrative.

Will you like this book? If you liked Northern Exposure or Boston Legal for its quirky characters . . . maybe. If you don't mind being teased and chided for your expectations, or disappointed in your anticipation . . . perhaps. If you have the patience for Lucy's generally crabbed style awaiting some of the most hilarious and on point descriptions in the English language . . . most probably.

One further caution, if your French is either non-existent or very spotty, you should seek out an edition (like the Oxford World Classics) with notes that translate the frequent French passages. The Kindle HarperCollins-Perennial does not.
