  • The play Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.

Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play.

Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera. During the English Restoration, it was revived and heavily revised by William Davenant. David Garrick's 18th-century version also modified several scenes, removing material then considered indecent, and Georg Benda's operatic adaptation omitted much of the action and added a happy ending. Performances in the 19th century, including Charlotte Cushman's, restored the original text, and focused on greater realism. John Gielgud's 1935 version kept very close to Shakespeare's text, and used Elizabethan costumes and staging to enhance the drama. In the 20th and into the 21st century, the play has been adapted in versions as diverse as George Cukor's comparatively faithful 1936 production, Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 version, Baz Luhrmann's 1996 MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet and the 2013 non-Shakespearian adaptation by Carlo Carlei.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Skillfully read by Claire Higgins, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will hold listeners spellbound as they become involved in the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues and in Romeo and Juliet's plight of love. Higgins' reading is very natural, and her voice is exceedingly pleasant to listen to. The cassette includes a plot summary, an introduction to Shakespeare by Leon Garfield, as well as supplementary information about Shakespeare and his writings by Dr. Rex Gibson, all read by Simon Russell Beale. This additional information is very worthwhile and will increase the listener's understanding of Shakespeare and why he continues to be important in literature. Peter Hutchins arranged the period background music. The technical qualities are excellent, and the teaching objectives are met. This program is appropriate for individual or group listening, and the additional information will provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A superior acquisition for both public and school libraries with audio collections.

    From Library Journal
This production of Romeo and Juliet featuring Kenneth Branagh and Sir John Gielgud is a superb contribution to the field of classics on cassette. The stunning performance by the Renaissance Theatre Company captures all the color and emotion of Shakespeare's eloquent tragedy of young love. With Samantha Bond as Juliet, Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, and Judi Dench as Nurse, the play, which is set in 16th-century Verona, contains some of the most passionate dialog ever written. An excellent musical score by Patrick Doyle accompanies the actors, as well as a full array of authentic sound effects. The pounding of hooves, the chiming of church bells, and the clashing of angry swords enrich this outstanding listening experience. A 24-page booklet complete with sketches and photos of the actors, a synopsis of the play, and background information is included in the package. Highly recommended for most libraries.

    Review
"We can more easily decide between Shakespear and any other author, than between him and himself. Shall we quote any more passages to shew his genius or the beauty of Romeo and Juliet? At that rate, we might quote the whole."

    Great for Students
    By LC
I am a student who had to read this book and I couldn't understand most of the stuff Shakespeare was writing. We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever
    By Newbia
This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).
Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.
There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.
Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.
I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

    Great Kindle Version
    By MsEnglishTeacher
I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

Excerpt from Rough and Tumble Engineering: A Book of Instructions for Operators of Farm and Traction Engines

In placing this book before the public the author wishes it understood that it is not his intention to produce a scientific work on engineering. Such a book would be valuable only to engineers of large stationary engines. In a nice engine room nice theories and scientific calculations arc practical. This book is intended for engineers of farm and traction engines, "rough and tumble engineers," who have everything in their favor today, and tomorrow are in mud holes, who with the same engine do eight horse work one clay and sixteen horse work the next day. Reader, the author has had all these experiences and you will have them, but don't get discouraged. You can get through them to your entire satisfaction.

Don't conclude that all you need to do is to read this book. It will not make an engineer of you. But read it carefully, use good judgment and common sense, do as it tells you. and my word for it. in one month, you, for all practical purposes, will be a better engineer than four-fifths of the so-called engineers today, who think what they don't know would not Dalce much of a book.

    Rough and Tumble Engineering
    By D. Hull
The author discusses how to OPERATE a steam engine. He does NOT discuss how to design one, nor how to build one. The book appears to have been written circa 1910.

    A quick summary
    By Patti
No one had left a review, so I thought I would quickly say a few words.

I only read the preface and introduction. The book is about engineering in the sense of trains; it was wrote for the common-man, as a sort of introduction/summary of the topic.

Hopefully, that will give a bit of color to what is to be expected, should you download it.

    Great resource
If you would like to know how to operate one of these magnificent machines or what it was like to operate them for a living this is a wonderful book.

It is also a look into how people worked and thought 100 years ago. It is not a how to build one or buy one.

Studies in Early Victorian Literature (Classic Reprint), by Frederic Harrison

Excerpt from Studies in Early Victorian Literature

That which in England is conveniently described as the Victorian Age of literature has a character of its own, at once brilliant, diverse, and complex. It is an age peculiarly difficult to label in a phrase; but its copious and versatile gifts will make it memorable in the history of modern civilisation. The Victorian Age, it is true, has no Shakespeare or Milton, no Bacon or Hume, no Fielding or Scott, - no supreme master in poetry, philosophy, or romance, whose work is incorporated with the thought of the world, who is destined to form epochs and to endure for centuries. Its genius is more scientific than literary, more historical than dramatic, greater in discovery than in abstract thought.

In lyric poetry and in romance our age has names second only to the greatest; its researches into nature and history are at least equal to those of any previous epoch; and if it has not many great philosophers, it has developed the latest, most arduous, most important of all the sciences. This is the age of Sociology; its central achievement has been the revelation of social laws.

Resisting Paradise: Tourism, Diaspora, and Sexuality in Caribbean Culture (Caribbean Studies Series), by Angelique V. Nixon

Winner of the Caribbean Studies Association’s 2016 Barbara T. Christian Award

Tourists flock to the Caribbean for its beaches and spread more than just blankets and dollars. Indeed tourism has overly affected the culture there. Resisting Paradise explores the import of both tourism and diaspora in shaping Caribbean identity. It examines Caribbean writers and others who confront the region’s overdependence on the tourist industry and the many ways that tourism continues the legacy of colonialism.

Angelique V. Nixon interrogates the relationship between culture and sex within the production of “paradise” and investigates the ways in which Caribbean writers, artists, and activists respond to and powerfully resist this production. Forms of resistance include critiquing exploitation, challenging dominant historical narratives, exposing tourism’s influence on cultural and sexual identity in the Caribbean and its diaspora, and offering alternative models of tourism and travel.

Resisting Paradise places emphasis on the Caribbean people and its diasporic subjects as travelers and as cultural workers contributing to alternate and defiant understandings of tourism in the region. Through a unique multidisciplinary approach to comparative literary analysis, interviews, and participant observation, Nixon analyzes the ways Caribbean cultural producers are taking control of representation. While focused mainly on the Anglophone Caribbean, the study covers a range of territories including Antigua, the Bahamas, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, as well as Trinidad and Tobago, to deliver a potent critique.

    Review

“Whether rooted resident, mobile diaspora, or open-eyed tourist, we all have something to learn from Resisting Paradise, Angelique Nixon’s empirically elegant and fiercely honest inquiry into the discursive, sexual, and material effects of tropical paradise. She teaches us how Caribbean cultural producers have created alternative ways of resisting and rerouting the damaging cultural, ecological and spiritual effects of tourism.”

―Mimi Sheller, author of Consuming the Caribbean: From Arawaks to Zombies; Tourism Mobilities: Places to Play, Places in Play; Citizenship from Below: Erotic Agency and Caribbean Freedom; and Aluminum Dreams: The Making of Light Modernity

“A deeply insightful reading of the ways Caribbean cultural workers from inside and outside the region negotiate the complexities of tourism and critique controlling cultural myths about the Caribbean as paradise. But as importantly, Nixon takes us beyond tourism’s double-bind and shows how writers and artists offer counter-narratives to exploitative tourism and neocolonialism that are grounded in resistance culture, shared histories, and diasporic connections. Resisting Paradise is an inspiring study, full of hope and love for the Caribbean, offering us new ways of thinking about ethical tourism and Caribbean freedom.”

―Kamala Kempadoo, professor, Department of Social Science, York University and author of Sexing the Caribbean: Gender, Race, and Sexual Labor

An Inland Voyage (Stanfords Travel Classics), by Robert Louis Stevenson

An Inland Voyage is an account of a canoeing trip through Belgium and northern France undertaken in 1876, when the author was 36 years old. Stevenson and his companion, Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson each had a kayak style wooden canoe, with a deck and rigged with a sail. Starting in Belgium, then travelling down river in France from Mauberge (near Mons) to Pontoise on the outskirts of Paris, the book paints a charming picture of western Europe in a more innocent age.

Robert Louis Stevenson was not only a gifted writer, he was also an indefatigable traveller. His thirst for adventure was formed by his boyhood visits to remote Scottish lighthouses, and he spent most of his life fleeing the rigours of cold climes and social orthodoxy. Along the way he travelled through France, Belgium, America, and the South Pacific.

    Timeless writing.
    By John B. Case
Besides Treasure Island and perhaps The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde, who has really read much of Stevenson? And even though the characters from these novels are embedded in our culture, I doubt that these stories are that broadly read anymore. Stevenson's writing is superb. I have been enjoying reading his lesser known tales contained in this book. The leather-bound volume will hold up well, and looks good in my bookcase.

Great book for a beginning library
    By madbookster
I was looking for a birthday gift for my daughter, While she has a great beginning library of many of the great American and European classics, she did no have anything by Robert Louis Stevenson and thus the decision to buy this particular book.

The book is well made and as it is in leather, she loved it. Also, my daughter likes hard covr books of those authors she reads and I got the book so that one day if she does have her own home and library in it, this book will be amongs other great authors whose words are timeless and whose stories continue to inspire wonder, amazement, thought, reflection and a sense of accomplishment.

I would recommend this book to any person who is beginning a lifetime library or those who just want to curl up with some very good stories by one of the worlds great authors.

    Entertaining and Still Fresh Travelogue
    By C. Ebeling
As a young man, Robert Louis Stevenson (RLS) needed to get out from under his parents' control and set about funding his freedom by writing travelogues, the big three being TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY, THE SILVERADO SQUATTERS and AN INLAND VOYAGE.

AN INLAND VOYAGE was undertaken with a friend of the leisure class, a voyage mostly conducted on the Oise River, from Belgium through France, in 1876 when RLS was 26 years old. Each man had a canoe rigged with a sail, and in the wit that infuses the entire narrative, RLS refers to his companion and himself by the names of their boats, the "Cigarette" and the "Arethusa," respectively. His is a lucid, chatty travelogue filled with insights on the rural culture they encountered and various adventures and misadventures along the way. The humor is often at his own expense.

There have been many editions of this work since it was first published. Mine, a delightful UK travel guide that includes contemporary directions for following RLS's itinerary, also adds an additional adventure on foot that was not in the first edition, in which he is thought to be a beggar and tossed in jail by officious police whose uniforms sound perfect for an over the top Gilbert and Sullivan production. My copy also includes later prefaces by RLS's wife and stepson, who met him on this journey. I hope this edition includes those extras as well.

I gave this 4 stars, though it is obvious I found it highly enjoyable. I nicked it by one because TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY is even better and shows this up a little. I highly recommend both.

Gothic Riffs: Secularizing the Uncanny in the European Imaginary, 1780–1820, by DIANE HOEVELER

Gothic Riffs: Secularizing the Uncanny in the European Imaginary, 1780–1820 by Diane Long Hoeveler provides the first comprehensive study of what are called “collateral gothic” genres—operas, ballads, chapbooks, dramas, and melodramas—that emerged out of the gothic novel tradition founded by Horace Walpole, Matthew Lewis, and Ann Radcliffe. The role of religion and its more popular manifestations, superstition and magic, in the daily lives of Western Europeans were effectively undercut by the forces of secularization that were gaining momentum on every front, particularly by 1800. It is clear, however, that the lower class and the emerging bourgeoisie were loath to discard their traditional beliefs. We can see their search for a sense of transcendent order and spiritual meaning in the continuing popularity of gothic performances that demonstrate that there was more than a residue of a religious calendar still operating in the public performative realm. Because this bourgeois culture could not turn away from God, it chose to be haunted, in its literature and drama, by God’s uncanny avatars: priests, corrupt monks, incestuous fathers and uncles. The gothic aesthetic emerged during this period as an ideologically contradictory and complex discourse system; a secularizing of the uncanny; a way of alternately valorizing and at the same time slandering the realms of the supernatural, the sacred, the maternal, and the primitive.

    Review
“In Gothic Riffs, Diane Long Hoeveler inverts the traditional interpretation of the rise of the Gothic. Hers is a new, and significant, argument. She shows, with great effectiveness and originality, the ubiquity of Gothic in popular and high art forms alike, from opera, to ballads, to chapbooks, as trans-European phenomena. I know of no modern work that aims to bring all of these different fields together in one impressively extensive book.” —Robert Miles, professor and chair, Department of English, the University of Victoria

“Diane Long Hoeveler's Gothic Riffs is genuinely innovative, informative, and insightful within the fields of both Gothic and Romantic literary studies. Indeed, this book should come to occupy a special niche of its own in the proliferating explosion of scholarship on the many kinds of Gothic that has continued to grow since the 1980s.” —Jerrold E. Hogle, University Distinguished Professor, The University of Arizona

Excerpt from Kokoro: Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life

Yesterday a telegram from Fukuoka announced that a desperate criminal captured there would be brought for trial to Kumamoto to-day, on the train due at noon. A Kumamoto policeman had gone to Fukuoka to take the prisoner in charge.

Four years ago a strong thief entered some house by night in the Street of the Wrestlers, terrified and bound the inmates, and carried away a number of valuable things. Tracked skillfully by the police, he was captured within twenty-four hours, - even before he could dispose of his plunder.

    The Heart of Things
    By Zack Davisson
"Kokoro" is a difficult word to translate from Japanese to English. Heart, Spirit, Way of Being...it is all of these things. Rather than attempt a direct translation, Lafcadio Hearn offers a selection of stories focusing on Japanese inner life, so that by the end you will understand kokoro.
The stories follow Hearn's particular interests of Japanese folklore and the vanishing culture of which he found himself a part in post-Meji Japan. Each story is a slice of life focusing on Japanese character, morals and feelings. This is what the Japanese people care about, what they think is important, what is inside.
The selected tales are non-judgmental and non-orientalist. This is no attempt to explain or highlight the "strange" Japanese, but merely a record and an illumination, in the best sense of the term.
    The collected stories:
    "At a Railway Station"
    "The Genius of Japanese Civilization"
    "A Street Singer"
    "From a Traveling Diary"
"The Nun of the Temple of Amida"
    "After the War"
    "Haru"
    "A Glimpse of Tendencies"
    "By Force of Karma"
    "A Conservative"
"In the Twilight of the Gods"
    "The Idea of Pre-Exsistance"
    "In Cholera Time"
    "Some Thoughts about Ancestor Worship"
    "Kimiko"

A Fluent Translation of Unspoken Worldviews
    By Crazy Fox
Not to be confused with Natsume Soseki's novel by the same title, Lafcadio Hearn's "Kokoro" is a magnificent collection of essays, vignettes, memoirs, and meditations on Japan in the 1890's. Very much a product of the mid-Meiji period, these masterfully-written little literary pieces are nonetheless timeless. Each piece is quite different from the rest, and yet almost all of them manage to start from everyday incidents or obvious observations and gradually spiral inwards to some deeply moving and startling insight into Japanese attitudes, values, and worldviews; more than once this seemingly methodless method allows Hearn to share with the reader certain common opinions and normal spiritual orientations held by average Japanese folks--the kinds of things usually taken for granted and so unarticulated, hence least amenable to documentation and scholarship (especially of the time, but even today). And Hearn does all this with an unpretentious erudition and an understated and balanced sympathy for his subject that, along with his literary flair for wonderfully clear and flowing prose, places his writings here in a category far above the rest. With him we can find none of the unintentional strains of condescension and orientalism so typical of folklore and religious anthropology, for while he's looking with the surprised gaze of the outsider with one eye, his other eye is that of the insider feeling very much at home where he is. The resulting view is visionary--but in subdued and shadowy tones.

Appendix on an Appendix: in addition to the fifteen excellent essays forming the main body of "Kokoro", there's an extensive appendix featuring Hearn's translations of three popular folk ballads: "The Ballad of Shuntoku-Maru", "The Ballad of Oguri Hangwan" and "The Ballad of O-Shichi, the Daughter of the Yaoya". These are fascinating on a number of levels. They provide a tantalizingly fleeting glimpse of plebian drama, remarkable in its very lack of remarkableness. There's a certain sociological angle, as the versions of these oral ballads collected and translated by Hearn are those recited by mountain outcastes in the area of today's Shimane Prefecture. Religiously the first two ballads are key in understanding popular attitudes concerning pilgrimage in Japan--the first demonstrating a creepy (almost voodoo) edge in Kannon faith at Kiyomizudera Temple, the second delightfully exaggerating the rejuvenating benefits of Kumano and its sacred hot springs. Meanwhile, the third ballad is a straightforwardly melodramatic retelling of a true story better known to us today in a more refined and literary version as found in the novelist Saikaku's "Five Women Who Loved Love" of 1686.
