Robert Boyers is professor of English at Skidmore College and founder and editor of the quarterly Salmagundi. He is also director of The New York State Summer Writers Institute. His many books include The Dictator's Dictation: The Politics of Novels and Novelists and a volume of short stories entitled Excitable Women, Damaged Men. His essays have appeared in Harper's, the New Republic, the Nation, Granta, the Yale Review, and many other magazines.

A pleasant and thoughtful book

Robert Boyers' comes across as so pleasant and engaging throughout that it would be hard not to enjoy these twelve essays. Each essay is a small meditation on a large topic, examples including Beauty, Fidelity or Modernism. Boyers illustrates each of these with anecdotes from his own life and, more prominently, with excerpts from literature and musings from other great thinkers.

The most immediate impression of Boyers is of someone extremely well-read. At times the book gives the impression of an autumn stroll through campus with a thoughtful and kind professor. He is ruminating on some of life's big questions and inviting you to consider these questions yourself. Boyers clearly has thought deeply about the relationships between people and what we may owe one another. Reading this book was a reminder that there are great intellects in the world that are not necessarily sharp or condescending. Highly recommended.

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: Thanks to celebrated works like The Liar’s Club, Lit, and Cherry, many would argue that Mary Karr put memoirs on the map. She has a thing or two to say about that in The Art of Memoir, a distillation of over 30 years of writing and teaching the form. While it certainly should be required reading for anyone wanting to become the next Cheryl Strayed (whom Karr mentored), it has much on offer for those of us who have no intentions of laying ourselves bare on the page. By examining her favorite memoirs in her signature smart, irreverent style--and with contagious affection--Karr explains why they resonate with us: Memoirs are a means to make sense of a life; they reveal the sometimes skewed ways in which we see ourselves, and how those perceptions betray our frailties, and our strengths. If you’re wondering if Karr touches on charlatan “memoirists” like infamous Oprah punching bag, James Frey, she does. But only to point out the important distinctions between the malleability of memory, and simply making stuff up. Also, why are we so gullible in believing those fictions? Perfect, like a personal visit with an admired professional

This is far more than a wonderful book about writing memoir. It's like an intimate conversation with an admired professional whose passion is reading and whose vocation is studying how people understand their own lives and choose to reveal them. It is a feast for anyone who loves books (and definitely not just for writers and writing students).

Fans of Mary Karr's three memoirs will find fascinating information about what she left out and why. They will recognize her unique and compelling voice on every page and proceed through the book eager to read what comes next.

She analyzes in helpful detail the authors and works she most admires, often adding fascinating anecdotes about them. She examines some of the high-profile failures as well. Karr shares background stories about her own writing, including the physical toll it has taken.

What I most want to tell you is this. I read this book in one sitting, and when I finish this review I'm going to reread it. Then I'm going to reread Nabokov's "Speak, Memory." I will read anything Mary Karr wants to write.

A must read for anyone writing a memoir

I bought Mary Karr's "Liars Club" three years ago when I first began writing my memoir. I loved her writing style and was both inspired and intimidated. I just finished this book and it does such a great job breaking down key components to the craft using examples from Karr's own work as well as works by other authors from classic to contemporary. If you are writing a memoir or thinking about writing one I strongly suggest picking this up. You will learn about the importance of voice and how to find yours and stay true to it. The art of showing, not telling (which is where I need the most help). How to use/select specific details to make scenes feel more carnal and truer to the reader. And get advice on things like how to handle writing about family and topics that may be sensitive to them. You can really tell that the author is a teacher–some chapters feel like they could actually have been taken from a lesson plan–but that's what makes this book so much better than some of the others I've read about writing memoirs that were penned by agents or other industry professional types. This book isn't just a list of general tips/advice. Mary Karr is a true master of the craft and digs deeper, providing examples to give the reader a better understanding. It's almost like sitting in on one of her classes. Which after reading this book, I'd really like to do. I wish this book had come out three years ago before I started writing but now I am using what I learned to revise and edit the manuscript I have. The only negative for me was one or two of the chapters focused too much on a particular author who's style and voice didn't resonate with my taste (Nabokov for example) so I glossed over those pages. But everybody's taste in books are different. That said, in my humble opinion, this is the best book written on the craft of memoir that I have read to date.

I have to say she has spoiled me for beautiful memoirs. She is a master of the craft ...

I have been an avid reader of Mary Karr's work for almost twenty years so I was very excited when this book was published. I have to say she has spoiled me for beautiful memoirs. She is a master of the craft and this book is a present she has wrapped up and given to her readers – and to all readers who love memoir.

The Art of Memoir is also a treasure trove of invaluable information for any writer, but as a reader, I felt like I'd just crashed the private party of every memoirist's secret place. AOM made me feel privy to insider secrets and my appreciation of the genre went even deeper. She delves into her favorite memorists' efforts and explains what she thought worked and what didn’t work and why. She speaks to writers and tells them to keep their focus on their readers and to try to craft beautiful, carnal pictures/events so that readers might want to re-read their memoir (to Karr, therein lies the beauty of great memoir: re-reading). I appreciate any author who takes care to deliver to his/her readers a beautiful reading experience and clearly, Karr does.

Karr even puts her own writing under the microscope and examines her life/life’s work full throttle and you get a front row seat to see how her writer-mind ferrets out her own truth and how she arrives at said truth with such beauty on the page (revise, revise, revise!). She speaks about her own fear of failure when she is writing, which gives readers a glimpse into the writing process we readers think just magically appears on the page.

If you are already a reader of Karr’s works, know that AOM is like getting a "Behind the Scenes" at the end of your favorite movie. For me, she answered twenty plus years’ worth of questions I had about her three memoirs and it was, truly, magical. If you’ve ever wished you could attend one of her classes at Syracuse, you now have it in your hands! If this is your first Karr read, you have some catching up to do. Lucky you! (She also writes spectacular poetry!)

If this book has any of the humor Dr. Buckner possesses, this book is a must read on that reason alone.

Worth the read.

I enjoyed this book but found that the author was very much in love with the Admiral, to the (slight) detriment of the book. A lot of time was spent trying to prove that Admiral Collingwood was the brains behind Admiral Nelson.

That said, it is a great read for the fan of the time period. Not sure how the die-hard historian would find it (I consider myself to be a slightly more than casual student of this time period).

Great intro back into the industry

Great book! After 4 years of being absent from the auto industry I decided to get back into it, and this book helped me get prepared for the pros and cons of dealership life. I came to realize, after reading this book, that if you are not afraid of asking questions, other technicians will respect you for doing a great job, regardless if you did it in double the book time. Also, the tool bill section was very accurate. I spent $1,000 the first 2 weeks I started my new job. As a new tech, there were tools I did not have yet and I had to borrow from other techs and they were never bothered by it, so when I made my first purchase I made a mental note of which tools I should buy, but at the same time which tools does nobody in the shop have. Within the first two days of my purchase I had 2 other techs ask to borrow my left handed drill bit and extractoe set, which I had no problem with, since they had let me use their tools at the beginning. So it was a give and take circumstance which I was okay with. I could tell when managememt felt a bit more comfortable with handing me more difficult tasks which was great. This book is a great introduction to the auto industry and I highly recommend it.

The lack of a hook describing in popular language the materialistic side of naval history is, I think, generally admitted. Historians as a rule have devoted small space to consideration of material; in particular, the story of the revolutionary changes in naval material which took place during the nineteenth century has never been placed before the public in convenient form. In the attempt to supply such a description I have taken the liberty, as an engineer, of treating of naval material as a whole; tracing, as well as my technical knowledge permits, the progress of all the three principal elements - ship, gun, engine - and their interdependence. The result, faulty and incomplete as it is, may nevertheless he of considerable service, it is hoped, in clarifying the work of the historians and bridging the gap which divides the classic histories from our modern text-books.

I have considered our modern navy to begin with the "Admiral" class of battleship, about the year 1880.

we never stop laughung

Car Talk with the Tappett Brothers keeps us laughing each time we listen to this CD and the other CDs I gave my husband for Christmas. We look forward to going somewhere, anywhere just to listen to the two characters!!!!
