Elmore Leonard: Four Novels of the 1980s: City Primeval / LaBrava / Glitz / Freaky Deaky (Library of America), by Elmore Leonard

The definitive edition of America’s modern master of crime fiction continues with four classic novels widely considered his best, presented in one volume for the first time with behind-the-scenes accounts of their genesis by editor Gregg Sutter, Leonard’s longtime researcher, and rare archival material: a must for any fan.  It was during the 1980s that Elmore Leonard came into his own as the most popular and critically acclaimed crime writer in America. The four novels collected here show him at the top of his form, each in its own distinct way: City Primeval is a modern-day Western pitched on the border between law and lawlessness, with Detroit as the frontier; LaBrava, set in Miami, orchestrates a complex scheme involving a long-forgotten film noir actress and an ex-Secret Service man turned photographer; Glitz plunges into the seedy world of Atlantic City casinos and into the twisted mind of the unforgettable Teddy Magyk, one of Leonard’s most indelible bad guys; and Freaky Deaky sets in motion a tumultuous ’60s flashback, laced with harsh and outlandish comic touches, as a pair of morally dubious veterans of Ann Arbor revolutionary politics try out some new scams.

A very pleasant surprise
By scooterlover
As a life-long Detroiter (yes, I live RIGHT IN THE CITY AND LIKE IT) I was reluctant to try one of Leonard's books, considering the way Detroit is universally trashed by people who DON'T live here. But I bought this 4-volume set, read the first novel in it (City Primeval) and I absolutely loved it. Before reading it I did some reading about Leonard, and I read that somebody compared Leonard to Flaubert. I thought to myself "Give me a break!" But like Flaubert, Leonard doesn't put any ideas into your head, he doesn't even tell you what the characters' attitudes or feelings are. Instead he lets you "hear" them talk and he lets you watch what they do and that's all you need to know about them. Leonard doesn't even tell you what other characters think or feel about them. You know by their reactions to what is said and done. Just like Flaubert, in fact!

Somebody else compared Leonard to Dickens. I don't think so! Dickens is incredibly wordy. Leonard is the opposite. No wasted words in Leonard.

This is not a who-dunnit, by the way, as there's no doubt about who the criminal is. I wouldn't even call it a "thriller," as it's never thrilling or exciting. Just a very interesting read. And of course fun for me since I know all the places that serve as settings; in fact I know people who live in the building where the murderer hangs out with his girlfriend.

Leonard's writing style is terse and to the point; short sentences and no pretense. No pretentious vocabulary and no "wow, look at me, look at how smart I am" attitude emanating from him. If you form an opinion about the author while reading this novel it has to be an affirmative one. You think: "This man is smart. He's not a silly show off--he doesn't need that."

I have to say this, though: If I went to the cottage for a week and wanted to take along half a dozen light-fiction novels, I'd take only one by Leonard--the others would have to be something like Agatha Christie so I'd have a reason to smile now and then. Leonard is strong stuff, like strongly seasoned food--you need something bland before and after it.

(Nine months later): I wrote the above review in October 2015 after reading just one of the four novels in the volume ("City Primeval"). It's now July 2016 and in the meantime I've read the remaining three. I enjoyed all of them very much. I found two of them a little confusing--I had difficulty hooking names with characters and keeping track of action when it switched from one group of characters to another, so I actually re-read two of the novels immediately after reading them for the first time. Obviously I was extremely interested or I wouldn't have done that. My favorite is the final one, "Freaky Deaky" in which Leonard makes it pretty clear that he was never taken in by the phoniness of the hippy generation with their "love" messages and their "anti war" messages while the vast majority just stayed stoned and were admired for it.

A Grand Master at the top of his game
By Jeffrey Tedford
Leonard's novels are among the finest of the genre, bar none, including Hasmmet & Chandler, Ross McDonald. The plotting is intricate and holds me in suspense until the end. City Primeval reminds me of classic Western tales brought up to date. The dialogue is sharp, witty, often hilarious.

Elmore Leonard is a master of dialogue: witty, curvaceous chatter that drives the narrative. We can all thank LOA for putting and keeping this valuable American resource in print.
