Model Making: Including Workshop Practice, Design and Construction of Models, a Practical Treatise for the Amateur and Professional Mechani

Have a knack for building things, an interest in constructing models, or enjoy tinkering with machines? Then the practical guide Model Making, Including Workshop Practice, Design and Construction of Models: A Practical Treatise for the Amateur and Professional Mechanic should be a part of your book collection. Raymond Yates was the editor of Everyday Engineering Magazine, a perfect position from which to give advice and instruction.

This guide is for people who like to build and engineer everything from models, cranes, guns, boats, trains, engines and a host of other things that require model-making. As Yates points out on the very first page, model-making is really "model engineering - engineering in miniature." That's why the book is equally useful for hobbyists and professionals and anyone with skill sets in between.

The first chapter describes everything you would need to set up a perfect workshop, from lighting and heating to the essential pieces of equipment. Subsequent early chapters are devoted to specific skills - such as lathe work, drilling, soldering, working with steel, abrasives, pattern-making and electroplating. The drawings accompanying this section really amplify the instructions, as Yates shows the reader what a good lathe looks like compared to a damaged one, for example.
The next chapters deal with different engines, including a side-crank steam engine, and twin and single-cylinder engines. Mechanics and aspiring mechanics will really enjoy the drawings and explanation of how these machines work. Model trains enthusiasts will get a lot of information from these chapters as well.
The book then covers flash steam plants and their uses in model airplanes, followed by steam turbines and boilers, submarines, cranes, hoists, gyroscopes, tanks and guns. These chapters contain everything a hobbyist would want to know to create accurate and working model trains, related machines and general scenes. Yates explains that each model works if it is made precisely to the specifications outlined in the book.

There are 300 drawings and photographs of the models and machines in the text. The book's strength is explaining how to do certain tasks and how to make certain things in specific, easy to understand terms with accompanying photos and drawings. For example, the drawing of a properly completed model boiler both teaches the reader how a real boiler works and how a properly constructed model should look after it is complete.

Model Making, Including Workshop Practice, Design and Construction of Models: A Practical Treatise for the Amateur and Professional Mechanic is a must-read if you enjoy model-making, engineering, mechanical instruments, design and for general interest.

A wake up call.
By travel light and smiling
Years ago, we contemplated different projects than we do today. This book will show you how to build a gasoline engine.
We don't think about doing that anymore. We don't think about buying machine tools for use in the home, although you can still do so. One of my biggest problems with modern life is that over-specialization has clearly reduced our capacity to act capably with hands AND mind. That limits us in very unfortunate ways.

You may never do any of the projects in this book, but they will tell you what your grandfather and great grandfather did for fun.
Although not that old, I did many of these things in the 50's and 60's as part of my routine life. I hope some of you use the opportunity to learn something about yourself.

GREAT WAY TO DECIDE IF I WANT TO READ A BOOK!
    By Anee
This review wanted me to run out and buy the book.
Right from the beginning this summary grabbed my attention. I am a Canadian and grew up with men who hunted, and being set in B.C. the scene was very clear.
I loved how the main and secondary characters were listed for me, it was like a play. Then chapter by chapter the plot builds for me but does not give it all away. I really like having a summary and analysis, it really let's me know if I want to spend my time reading the book.
Can't wait for the next book to come out.

    A Very Exciting Page-Turner
    By Jim Sasser
I read the Kindle version. It put me off at first with the Eugene character. When I went back to it, it became a page turner. I could not wait to get back to it. The characters are very believable. The BC setting (I live in WA) was perfect. The descriptions of places and event were very real. I will be reading more of Loreth's books, if my heart can stand it.

The Poet and the Vampyre: The Curse of Byron and the Birth of Literature's Greatest Monsters, by Andrew McConnell Stott

Love affairs, literary rivalries, and the supernatural collide in an inspired journey to Lake Geneva, where Byron, the Shelleys, and John Polidori come together to create literature’s greatest monsters

In the spring of 1816, Lord Byron was the greatest poet of his generation and the most famous man in Britain, but his personal life was about to erupt. Fleeing his celebrity, notoriety, and debts, he sought refuge in Europe, taking his young doctor with him. As an inexperienced medic with literary aspirations of his own, Doctor John Polidori could not believe his luck.

That summer another literary star also arrived in Geneva. With Percy Bysshe Shelley came his lover, Mary, and her step-sister, Claire Clairmont. For the next three months, this party of young bohemians shared their lives, charged with sexual and artistic tensions. It was a period of extraordinary creativity: Mary Shelley started writing Frankenstein, the gothic masterpiece of Romantic fiction; Byron completed ChildeHarold’s Pilgrimage, his epic poem; and Polidori would begin The Vampyre, the first great vampire novel.

It was also a time of remarkable drama and emotional turmoil. For Byron and the Shelleys, their stay by the lake would serve to immortalize them in the annals of literary history. But for Claire and Polidori, the Swiss sojourn would scar them forever. 16 pages of color and B&W photographs

    Review
“An excellent work of critical biography. Stott’s book reads with crispness and frequent deadpan, offering the pleasures of fiction without relying on unseemly liberties in the scholarship.” (Pacific Standard)

“Engaging reading, dotted with amusing literary anecdotes and keen observations. Stott’s ruminations about fame, portrayed here as a candle around which the writers circle like moths and burn themselves, are illuminating.” (The Dallas Morning News)

“The Poet and the Vampyre reads a little like a period noir, full of atmospheric carriage rides, aggrieved letters, and deep personal miseries.” (The Boston Globe)

“Fascinating. Stott’s book draws a hypnotic picture of celebrity. In revealing the humanity of these 19th-century icons, without ever needing to draw explicit parallels with today’s popular artists, the book makes a valuable contribution to an understanding of art and its costs.” (Los Angeles Review of Books)

“A lusty, lively literary history packed from intimate details and personal anecdotes from a rich array of sources.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

“McConnell Stott is as thorough and sympathetic a biographer as the young doctor could want. Fluidly and evocatively presented.” (Open Letters Monthly)

“Fascinating reading even two centuries later.” (Booklist)

“Impressive. As Stott reveals in this engrossing history, lust, greed and the unquenchable thirst for fame were forces of evil that imbued the age of Romanticism with grief.” (Kirkus (starred review))

“A thrilling tale about the pursuit of love, sex, and fame. Provides a dual portrait of the Romantic spirit during its most intense period of creativity―and uncovers the emotional devastation that was left in its wake.” (Amanda Foreman, New York Times bestselling author of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire)

“Hard to put down.” (Providence Journal)

“A learned, constantly entertaining and deliciously gossipy account of the erotic and personal entanglements that led up to, and away from, the most famous wet evening in Romantic literature. This excellent book offers an enthralling, if ultimately tragic, soap opera and lots of fascinating information.” (Michael Dirda - The Washington Post)

“A rip-roaring book about Lord Byron and his coterie. Extremely well researched (with 86 pages of notes) and beautifully written, Stott’s book is a delight and a must-read for anyone interested in Lord Byron or vampires.” (The Sun News Miami)

“Fluid, informative and stylish, offering uncommon insight.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“The book successfully draws attention to two figures―Polidori and Clairmont―who have been overshadowed by their more illustrious companions.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Brilliant. As a portrait of London life in all its mutinous and anarchic variety this book would be hard to beat.” (The Spectator, on 'The Pantomime Life of Joseph Grimaldi')

“Andrew McConnell Stott widens Byron’s spotlight to include two people whose lives he radically altered in the short time he knew them. Entertaining and engaging.” (Pittsburg Post-Gazette)

“A fast-paced rumbustious biography. Stott evokes both the dizzying excitement and the harshness of theatrical life.” (The Observer, on 'The Pantomime Life of Joseph Grimaldi')

Old Tale Well Told (but misleading subtitle)
    By Charlus
Clearly the title of this book was created by the publisher: use the words vampire, curse, monster, et al. to sell it. And for that reason, it may have set up inappropriate expectations that lead to the negative reviews you read here. In fact, the book has little to do with any of this. The Washington Post reviewer said the book would more accurately be called "The Doctor and the Sister-In-Law" and I would agree.

What it is in reality, is a group history of the intertwined lives of Byron, Shelley and their circle centered around a summer of cohabitation in 1816, both the before and after. It is a fascinating story of tragedy, betrayal, disappointment, suicides and deaths, all involving supremely talented and/or interesting (though not particularly likable) people. As a prior reviewer mentions, it is very well-researched with one fourth of the text relegated to documentation. But it reads like a novel, criss-crossing between the various players of this tragic tale.

The creation of the novel Frankenstein has a few page references and Polidori's The Vampyre takes up a bit of one chapter, but essentially both works are minor events in the melodramatic and yes, Romantic, lives of the subjects of this extremely readable biographical history: placing the events involving Byron, Shelley, Mary Shelley, John Polidori and Claire Clairmont in relation to each other as well as the events affecting Europe at that time.

THE POET & THE VAMPYRE: Pointless & Vapid
    By Richard Masloski
When I came across this book in my local bookstore, I was thrilled! I have always been fascinated by the Summer of 1816 that gave birth to FRANKENSTEIN (and THE VAMPYRE). The opening scene betwixt Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley in the classic THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN gripped me as a child and still hasn't let go, all these years later. So seeing the book - and especially at this imminent Halloween-time of year - with its captivating title - THE POET AND THE VAMPYRE - I drew excitedly closer to the volume on the New Releases bookstore table. I then read with a further thrill its thrilling and promissory subtitle: The Curse of Byron and the Birth of Literature's Greatest Monsters. All this then alchemically mixed with the truly Gothic cover image of a fog-enshrouded precipice that subliminally suggested Frankenstein's phallic laboratory in the Universal films wherein were birthed the Monster and his mistake-of-a-mate, well, with all this going for it just by looking at the cover, this looked to be the book I had always hoped for - a deep, penetrating, poetic look at, well, all the things promised via title, subtitle and haunted, haunting cover.

Alas, I am sorry to say that I haven't been this disappointed in a book in quite some time. The book itself, writ by Professor of English Andrew McConnell Stott, is in NO way commensurate with its cover! I will even go so far as to say that the disparity between book and cover is clear evidence of the all-too-prevalent ruse known as 'false advertising.'

As a prior reviewer noted, way too much of the tedious text is filled with all sorts of minutiae hardly germane to the promised purpose of the book. This would not matter so much as the Devil is, after all, in the details. But the details I was hoping for are just not there! What is peculiar and perverse about Stott's book is that it seems to willfully, wantonly evade the book's seemingly avowed purpose - and that is taking its readers into the sanctum sanctorum to witness the actual 'Birth of Literature's Greatest Monsters.' The actual title itself is even problematic: nothing is really revealed about the dynamic between the Poet - Byron, I assume - and the Vampyre - Dr. Polidori's novella which had its genesis one summer night at the Villa Diodati, along with Mary Shelley's macabre masterwork. Perhaps Stott's recitation of the intertwining stories of Byron and his brooding bunch is meant to somehow say that Byron, himself, was the Vampyre in all of this. It isn't really made clear - nor is 'The Curse of Byron' adequately addressed or even defined. One could say that practically everyone was cursed in those Gothic, Romantic Days - even so much as to willingly allow the notion of a Curse to ever take hold and flourish in the first place. Why pick on poor Byron!

Hoping the door to the delivery rooms of both Frankenstein's Monster and Dracula's Vampyre forebear would be wide open to us herein, we are permitted just a peak in followed by a fast-shutting door in our faces instead. There is no sense conveyed within these pages whatsoever of the conception, birth and nursing by Mary Shelley of her Great Monster. Nor is there any genuine genealogical examination of how Polidori's Vampyre led to the other of Literature's Greatest Monster - and that would be Count Dracula. Is there any insight as to why Mary wrote what she did, or how her husband Percy truly assisted her - or the possibility of his having actually ghost-written the book, is this looked at at all? What did Byron think of the autographed copy he'd received? How did Mary's account of the novel's genesis change over the years as evidenced in her varying introductions to the book? This is the minutiae that ultimately matters! Fine, it is interesting to read about how the Simplon Pass came to be - but more so serve us stuff central to the book's title and subtitle and at least attempt to paint pictures in words to match the spooky, spectacular cover image. What is herein is a tale told many times before and in some very better ways. Even the illustrations within seem to purposefully diverge from what the cover and book title seemingly promise. I was left, after reading through this dry, academic recitation of people and places, wondering, in all honestly, why the book was even written in the first place.

If only the contents were truly wed to the cover!

    Bryron slept here...and here...and here...and...
    By Hennessey Gal
Thrilling? Inspired? Please. Did the reviewers actually READ this book?

Andrew McConnell Stott is a reader. He must have read every jot of writing in the copious letters, journals, and other literaria produced by the Fulsome Five in this narrative. He insists on taking us through every village, and down every twisting path and pigtrail Byron and his physician, John Polidori traverse traveling to Geneva where they join Percy Shelley, his mistress Mary and her step-sister Claire Clairmont, engage in literary and sexual dalliances and then travel on. An on. A little less tramping would make the book much more palatable.

I've had the theory that Lord Byron was the author of Frankenstein, considering the sleeping-around that was going on during that Geneva adventure when Percy Byshe Shelley and Mary, Claire Godwin, Lord Byron, and John Polidori engaged in the spook-tale competition that resulted in the creation of both Frankenstein and the Vampyre, but this book lays that suspicion to rest. Mary was the only one of the five to continue her work over a period of time long after the group had gone apart. Unfortunately, that is the pivotal event upon which the story hangs, but it comes and goes with a yawn before the book is half over and then they are all off tramping across Europe again, seeing the sights and paying the price for their liaisons.

The book is informative and would be a refreshing read for an underclass English Lit major adept at skipping all the scenery. It could have been a really interesting and unique travel book, if that had been the emphasis, with juicy anecdotes sprinkled throughout. It could have been a much tighter psychological exploration, had the interminable journeys been more carefully chosen for inclusion. But it takes on the character of Polidori as it progresses, harem-scarem through the narrative, a little full of itself, and totally ineffectual, even as it informs.

I've read heavy scholarly tomes in less time and with less effort, but still feel I've gained much insight into the writers and their times. The book is not a waste, but the reader must be determined to stay with it to gain benefit.

    The man needed an editor.

Aerial Interdiction: Air Power and the Land Battle in Three American Wars, by Eduard Mark

This analytical work by Dr. Eduard Mark of the Center for Air Force History examines the practice of air interdiction in three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the war in Southeast Asia. It considers eleven important interdiction campaigns, all of them American or Anglo-American, for only the United States and Great Britain had the resources to conduct interdiction campaigns on a large scale in World War II. Dr. Mark proposes what he considers to be a realistic objective for interdiction: preventing men, equipment, and supplies from reaching the combat area when the enemy needs them and in the quantity he requires. As Mark notes, there has been little intensive scholarship on the subject of interdiction especially when contrasted with the work done on strategic bombardment. In the wake of the Persian Gulf War, the reader will no doubt be impressed by the comparatively low performance of weapons in these pre-Gulf war campaigns. DESERT STORM showed that recent advances in technology had enabled interdiction to reach new levels of effectiveness, especially in night operations. Yet, as the reader soon discovers, interdiction in the pre-Gulf campaigns sometimes profoundly influenced military operations. As is often the case in military history, the effects were often serendipitous-not as planned or anticipated, but present nevertheless. By the middle of the Second World War, aircraft were already demonstrating that they could have a devastating impact upon a military force’s ability to wage war. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, for example, complained bitterly during the North African and Normandy campaigns about air power that, in his memorable words, “pinned my army to the ground” and otherwise denied his forces both supplies and the ability to freely maneuver. The aircraft and weapons that caused the German commander such problems were, by today’s standards, primitive. The accuracy of bombing was calculated in terms of circles with radii of hundreds or even thousands of feet. Bridges took dozens, sometimes hundreds, of sorties to destroy, meaning that a simultaneous taking-down of an enemy’s transportation network was impossible. A single target also required strike packages of hundreds of airplanes. Target “revisiting” because of poor bombing accuracy meant that aircraft loss rates were often alarmingly high. Yet, even with all of these limitations, air attack still had the ability to hinder, limit, and eventually help defeat a robust, well-trained and well-equipped opponent. It is important that this be recognized, just as it is important that we recognize that modern air war, as shown in the Gulf conflict, is very different and more effective, not only from that of 1941-1945, but from the more recent Vietnam era as well. The challenges posed by aerial interdiction from the dust of the Western Desert to the triple canopy of Southeast Asia gave but a hint of how devastating an attacker the airplane would prove in the Gulf War of 1991. There, advanced strike aircraft-some of them stealthy as well-dropped precision munitions with shattering effect against the Iraqi military machine. As shocking as it might seem, revolutionary advances in precision navigation and weapons technology had largely reduced the previous experiences of interdiction to historical anecdote, not historical prediction. Today, in the era of Global Reach-Global Power, the lessons of aerial interdiction through Vietnam are instructive, for no other reason than this: they reveal how far modern airpower has come. This book, by tracing air interdiction from the Western Front through Vietnam, and by examining both its failures and successes, fills an important gap in the history of air power and enables us to appreciate to an even greater degree the profound significance that air power possesses now and for the future.

Excellent Study of Interdiction in WW II, Korea, and Vietnam
    By David W. Bobb
Author Eduard Mark has done a superb job of recounting the strengths and weaknesses of aerial interdiction efforts in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Starting with the Allied invasion of North Africa, Mark examines how the three-tiered system of Allied air operations was developed (primarily through British influence) and how that system remained in effect throughout the succeeding wars. As the author discusses the various operations in World War II, he is not afraid to state that things did not always go well regarding interdiction efforts and on more than one occasion, airmen could not deliver their promised results. At times, this was crucial, as in Sicily when controversial command decisions coupled with non-effective employment of air and naval assets allowed nearly 40,000 Germans to escape to Italy. At other times, as in preparation for D-Day, aerial interdiction played a key role in preventing or delaying German troops and supplies from reaching the Normandy beachhead. As World War II gave way to Korea and later, Vietnam, Mark does an excellent job of providing insight into how those wars differed from World War II, how political constraints hampered the effectiveness of interdiction efforts, and how the Air Force's own single-mindedness of pursuing the strategic mission overshadowed equipment and training needed to successfully prosecute interdiction missions. Also, the limited effectiveness of interdiction due to sophisticated antiaircraft defenses and topographical features is examined. In sum, Mark presents a very well-balanced account of aerial interdiction from its development in North Africa through Vietnam. His frankness in stating when things went well and when they didn't go well, along with his analysis, add to the credibility of his writing. Lastly, his use of maps at the beginning of each chapter, coupled with photos throughout the book make it easy for the reader to visualize where things are happening and how they are unfolding.

    An existential journey
    By Schmudde
“Tethered” is a unique spin on the zombie trope. The walking dead roam around the city of Denver as our main character is trapped in an unusual purgatory: his conscious soul floats outside of his walking corpse.

Our main character’s spirit floats above the fray while other zombies pursue living flesh. He relishes in his own loneliness and misery, too emotionally damaged to be an academic nihilist, but too intelligent to enjoy the trappings of ignorance. The post-apocalyptic world is a relatable metaphor for anybody who has had trouble finding their place in the world.

I personally had a little trouble with the relentless negativity of the main character, but it works within the world and sets him up as a redemptive anti-hero. But that's my only quibble. The art is fantastic and the timelines are clearly delineated by illustration and color.

With a body or without a body, living or dead, the main character in “Tethered” seems destined to be trapped by his own ideals, ideals which he cannot express to the world around him. It is the ultimate existential journey, expertly crafted in the zombie genre, not as a gimmick, but as a powerful backdrop for this unique loner.

If Hemingway was a zombie, what would he say?
    By D
"Tethered" is a story of two lost souls experiencing an existential crisis while wandering around the post apocalyptic world "tethered" to their now-dead bodies. While it's tempting to write this off as a yet another zombie book, the story is rich in its critique of modern society's life goals, then takes a surprisingly dark turn down the mind of a complete psychopath. It will leave you questioning your life and why you're here. Definitely give it a shot!

I don't usually like zombie stuff, but this book was insane. Puts a nice new psychological spin to a genre that has almost made It's self redundant. Great read.

On English Poetry: Being an Irregular Approach to the Psychology of This Art, From Evidence Mainly Subjective (Classic Reprint), by Robert

Excerpt from On English Poetry: Being an Irregular Approach to the Psychology of This Art, From Evidence Mainly Subjective

The greater part of this book will appear controversial, but any critic who expects me to argue on what I have written, is begged kindly to excuse me; my garrison is withdrawn without a shot fired and his artillery may blow the fortress to pieces at leisure. These notebook reflections are only offered as being based on the rules which regulate my own work at the moment, for many of which I claim no universal application and have promised no lasting regard. They have been suggested from time to time mostly by particular problems in the writing of my last two volumes of poetry. Hesitating to formulate at present a comprehensive water-tight philosophy of poetry, I have dispensed with a continuous argument, and so the sections either stand independently or are intended to get their force by suggestive neighbourliness rather than by logical catenation. The names of the glass houses in which my name as an authority on poetry lodges at present, are to be found on a back page.

It is a heartbreaking task to reconcile literary and scientific interests in the same book.

    Delightful
    By meadowreader
A very British book, with all the quirky charm that can entail. Graves was of course an important man of letters in his time, author of "I, Claudius" among much else. He was also a very good poet, and this book contains his thoughts, advice, prejudices, and ruminations about poetry and, especially, the writing of poetry. Here's a sample:

"I have often heard it said that a poet in intervals between inspirations should keep his hand in by writing verse-exercises, but that he should on on such occasions immediately destroy what he has written. That seems all wrong, it is an insult to the spontaneity of true poetry to go through a ritual farce of this sort and the poet will only be blunting his tools. He ought not to feel distressed at the passage of time as if it represented so many masterpieces unwritten. If he keeps mentally alive and has patience, the real stuff may arrive any moment; when it doesn't, it isn't his fault, but the harder he tries to force it, the longer it will be delayed."

Or this "Epitaph of an Unfortunate Artist," aimed at the would-be poet:

He found a formula for drawing comic rabbits:

Places of InventionFrom Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press

The companion book to an upcoming museum exhibition of the same name, Places of Invention seeks to answer timely questions about the nature of invention and innovation:  What is it about some places that sparks invention and innovation? Is it simply being at the right place at the right time, or is it more than that? How does “place”—whether physical, social, or cultural—support, constrain, and shape innovation? Why does invention flourish in one spot but struggle in another, even very similar location? In short: Why there? Why then?

Places of Invention frames current and historic conversation on the relationship between place and creativity, citing extensive scholarship in the area and two decades of investigation and study from the National Museum of American History’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. The book is built around six place case studies: Hartford, CT, late 1800s; Hollywood, CA, 1930s; Medical Alley, MN, 1950s; Bronx, NY,1970s; Silicon Valley, CA, 1970s–1980s; and Fort Collins, CO, 2010s. Interspersed with these case studies are dispatches from three “learning labs” detailing Smithsonian Affiliate museums’ work using Places of Invention as a model for documenting local invention and innovation.

Written by exhibition curators, each part of the book focuses on the central thesis that invention is everywhere and fueled by unique combinations of creative people, ready resources, and inspiring surroundings. Like the locations it explores, Places of Invention shows how the history of invention can be a transformative lens for understanding local history and cultivating creativity on scales of place ranging from the personal to the national and beyond.

    Review
    CHOICE
As the title indicates, this book is companion to an exhibition, both of which are the result of research conducted by the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation.  Together they explore the contexts for invention and innovation, i.e., "What is it about some places that sparks invention and innovation?  Is it simply being at the right place at the right time ... ?  How does 'place'—whether physical, social, or cultural—support, constrain, and shape innovation?"  This coffee-table book covers an eclectic range of disciplines and time periods over a geographical area encompassing the continental US.  Beginning with the semiconductor and computer industries in Silicon Valley (1970s-80s), it moves to the Bronx where hip-hop music was born and developed (1970s), and then to Medical Alley, MN, where medical technology was developed (1950s).  The oldest "place of invention" examined is Hartford, CT, in the late 1800s, at the height of its machine tool and small arms industries.  Hollywood is visited during the introduction of Technicolor in movies (1930s).  And  Fort Collins, CO, is the place responsible for environmental innovations in this decade.  The six main case studies are accompanied by three "learning labs" showcasing efforts by Smithsonian affiliate museums to document inventions in Peoria, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.
