Tolkien among the Moderns, by Ralph C. Wood

It has long been recognized that J. R. R. Tolkien's work is animated by a profound moral and religious vision. It is less clear that Tolkien's vision confronts the leading philosophical and literary concerns addressed by modern writers and thinkers. This book seeks to resolve such uncertainty. It places modern writers and modern quandaries in lively engagement with the broad range of Tolkien's work, while giving special attention to the textual particularities of his masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.

In ways at once provocative and original, the contributors deal with major modern artists and philosophers, including Miguel de Cervantes, Friedrich Nietzsche, Emmanuel Levinas, Iris Murdoch, and James Joyce. The essays in Tolkien among the Moderns also point forward to postmodernism by examining its implications for Tolkien's work. Looking backward, they show how Tolkien addresses two ancient questions: the problems of fate and freedom in a seemingly random universe, as well as Plato's objection that art can neither depict truth nor underwrite morality. The volume is premised on the firm conviction that Tolkien is not a writer who will be soon surpassed and forgotten—exactly because he has a permanent dwelling place "among the moderns."

"This collection of essays places Tolkien in the context of the big themes of philosophy, historically and today. It will speak to readers who are already drawn to the work of Tolkien and who either have a desire to see into his work more deeply or desire to see how his work might be employed to think about other matters, for example, how might the work of Tolkien impact the so-called warfare between poetry and philosophy. I believe that the work of Tolkien is here to stay, that it will continue to stand the test of time, and that intelligent, curious readers will find Tolkien among the Moderns deeply rewarding." —Charles Taliaferro, St. Olaf College

Waste (Object Lessons), by Brian Thill

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.

Though we try to imagine otherwise, waste is every object, plus time. Whatever else an object is, it's also waste-or was, or will be. All that is needed is time or a change of sentiment or circumstance. Waste is not merely the field of discarded objects, but the name we give to our troubled relationship with the decaying world outside ourselves. Waste focuses on those waste objects that most fundamentally shape our lives and also attempts to understand our complicated emotional and intellectual relationships to our own refuse: nuclear waste, climate debris, pop-culture rubbish, digital detritus, and more.

Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Review

"Fascinating, thought-provoking, and necessary, Brian Thill's Waste is about not just our present but our future. You can't read it and come out of the experience unchanged." ―Jeff VanderMeer, New York Times-Bestselling Author of The Southern Reach trilogy

"If 'waste,' as Brian Thill points out, is any object plus time, then Waste is waste plus spirited curiosity and tremendous intelligence. With a gaze full of vigor and heart, Thill looks at the fate of what we discard-from space junk to horse corpses to bird bellies split open from plastic-and illuminates invisible margins we'd often rather forget. I read the whole book in one sitting, spellbound." ―Leslie Jamison, New York Times-Bestselling Author of The Empathy Exams

"Waste is the finest filth around-or really the finest mediation of it I can think of: Thill looks deeply into how what we waste controls us at the level of the personal and the public-our discards become our fate and home both-and finds treasure." ―Alexander Chee, author of Edinburgh and The Queen of the Night

"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary―even banal―objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you've read a few of these, you'll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: 'I wonder what the story is behind this thing?'"―Steven Johnson, best-selling author of How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World

"The Object Lessons project, edited by game theory legend Ian Bogost and cultural studies academic Christopher Schaberg, commissions short essays and small, beautiful books about everyday objects from shipping containers to toast. The Atlantic hosts a collection of "mini object-lessons", brief essays that take a deeper look at things we generally only glance upon ('Is bread toast only insofar as a human toaster perceives it to be "done?" Is bread toast when it reaches some specific level of nonenzymatic browning?'). More substantive is Bloomsbury's collection of small, gorgeously designed books that delve into their subjects in much more depth." ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

Illuminating, Beautifully Written Work on the Lessons of the Wasted, the Trashed, the Derelict
By Frank
Thill states “this book is for the flaneurs of filth, those who like to wrestle with the cinders and rummage around in the midden heaps.” As someone who’s done my share of midden heap reckoning (often at used book stores or library sales), I was immediately drawn in. But the book is in fact for a far broader audience—anyone who’s felt either alienation or wonder at the myriad objects that surround us, alarmed at their dim prospects for re-use, recycling, or safe disposal.

In a series of interconnected essays, Thill frequently glosses the work of other writers while offering his own cultural theory of waste. As he observes toward the end of the book, the topic is inevitably a reflection of time and taste: the most valued item now may be trash in a matter of years, if not months. One man’s curio collection appears to another as teeming clutter. We should find each of these conditions far more discomfiting than we do.

Thill’s book creates such discomfiture, but in the most gentle and graceful way. He’ll comment on a terrible 1970s TV sci-fi comedy (Quark, about a space trash collector), finding a kernel of insight embedded in an utterly trashy precursor to Wall-E (another film mentioned in Waste). He brilliantly compares the shows American Pickers and Hoarders, finding an industrial solidarity in the former that is utterly lacking in the latter’s pathologization of people who probably happen to waste less than many of us—they just make the mistake of keeping it all in one place.

Thill makes a distinction between the (beautiful) ruins and the (neglected or despised) derelict toward the beginning of the book, and signals his work as an effort to mark, elevate, or delineate the importance of the latter. But the book’s cover (with an image of a statue of Augustus floating along a stream of detritus) and its restrained and elegant style signal an aspiration for this work itself to last, to be a guide for future thinkers trying to understand the bizarre juxtapositions of excess and deprivation (on bodies and in communities) so common in 21st century America.

Waste should last—it continues a tradition of critical theory going back at least to Walter Benjamin, of deeply pondering our material, manmade surroundings, and hearing what they say. Thill has listened intently to the objects and experiences most of the rest of us are fast to trash or trample, and this volume is a considered, concise reflection on what we should deeply ponder before we continue to do so.

A Great Gift for the Hoarder in Your Life!
By Ella Kaya
Is everything that we discard garbage? Or is everything we have just waiting to become waste? Or is it waste already? This book helps you see trash in a whole new way. On the one hand, everything we have is just waste-in-the-making. On the other hand, another person's waste is someone else's treasure. If you're looking to redeem your interest in the discarded or to affirm your desire to keep everything (or if you know someone who feels that way), this a fun book that keeps you turning the pages!

Terrific Reference for Dickens Fans
By P. Schumacher
I bought this book years ago, and I refer to it constantly.

It summarizes all Dickens's writings--including the travel pieces and short stories, even the plays, to say nothing of the novels.

And it gives alphabetical lists of characters for each novel, with a capsule about the person and relationships. This is an enormous help given the huge size and complexity of Dickens's books.

It also lists all the characters in the back alphabetically, for easy reference if you have forgotten which book a character was from.

In addition, it gives critical and commercial receptions for the books, both historical and modern. The modern references are now a bit dated, but a useful start.

Plus there are constant references to Dickens's thought processes while writing, together with events from his life.

A Yankee Ace in the RAF: The World War I Letters of Captain Bogart Rogers (Modern War Studies)From University Press of Kansas

The engines are started, twenty shiny propellers glistening in the sun, forty exhausts rumbling and belching blue smoke. . . . Everything ready, the pilot waves his hand, the blocks are pulled and the flights taxi out one at a time. Away goes the commander, motor roaring, streamers flying, and the rest follow in their proper formation order. A couple of turns around the aerodrome and they're away to the line-up, up, and they soon disappear in the haze.

Just beyond that beckoning "haze," Captain Bogart Rogers and his fellow pilots flew into enemy territory to fight the world's first air war. Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers's letters to his fiancee, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen's Flying Circus.

The son of controversial Los Angeles attorney Earl Rogers ("the greatest jury lawyer of his time," claimed Clarence Darrow) and brother to pioneering Hearst journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns, Bogart made his mark in the Great War. Of the three hundred-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became "aces" by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six "kills" in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, Cambrai, Ypres-Lys, and six other major engagements.

Rogers also had a definite flair for writing, one that launched his postwar career as a journalist and screenwriter in Hollywood. The letters in this volume are a striking testament to that skill. Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humor, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodromes, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride "Izzy" (who celebrates her 99th birthday in 1996).

Review
"Incontestably, Bogart Rogers had a way with words; his lively style is ideal for relating the adventures of a young man caught up in the world's first air war. Where many other airmen struggled to convey the wonders of early flight, Rogers provides a deft and vivid portrait of life in the cockpit."—Lee Kennett, author of The First Air War, 1914–1918

"Rogers was a sensitive and sensible observer who wrote well even at this early stage of his literary career. His letters chronicle his maturation in the terrible crucible of the air war."—David F. Trask, author of The AEF and Coalition Warmaking, 1917–1918

From the Author
In the summer of 1917 Bogart Rogers, a 20 year old sophomore at Stanford University and son of a prominent Los Angeles attorney joined the Royal Flying Corps, and trained in Canada, Texas, and England. Assigned to RAF No.32 Squadron, he arrived in France at the end of April, 1918. From the middle of May to the Armistice on November 11 Rogers fought in ten major battles on the Western Front and ended the war a Flight Leader and decorated Captain with six enemy planes to his credit. From the time he left for Canada in August 1917 until he returned home in May 1919 he wrote 244 letters to a Stanford girl, Isabelle Young, whom he married in 1920. The letters represent not only a chronicle of World War I, but also an 18 month courtship by mail. They are written with clarity and humor and the skill of a writer who, after the war, wrote for the Los Angeles Examiner, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, Popular Aviation and many other magazines . He was also a screen writer and movie producer for Paramount Pictures.

Although the book is published as Military History and covers the life of a young fighter pilot through training and aerial combat in "the terrible crucible of the air war" it also contains an element of romance and has appealed to at least a few women. One reader, Barbara Ivey wrote, "I so enjoyed becoming a part of the lives of these two sweethearts".

The original letters have been edited and the content reduced by a third, leaving out much of the trivia found in collections of letters such as comments on the weather and personal banter etc.. The book contains some, but not many footnotes. Each chapter is prefaced with a paragraph or two putting the events of the chapter in historical context.

Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humor, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodrome, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride "Izzy" (who celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday in 1996).

An intimate look at the Air War
By Jesse Negron
Bogart Rogers gives us a uniquely personal perspective of the first air war. Unlike many other war diary books, this book is a collection of letters that Rogers wrote to his soon-to-be wife. The letters, in and of themselves, are very interesting. Obviously, Rogers had no idea they would be published one day, so they have a strikingly intimate and honest tone when compared to other war diaries of the time. Because the story unfolds organically, via this series of letters, there is a lot of reading between the lines. Especially when it comes to what he chooses not to tell his fiance'. His description of one of his close friends not returning after a sortie is written so succinctly and "business-like" that his pain and loss somehow seem more intense and palpable. In some ways, this book is a love story. Although every letter goes into detail about his air combat experiences, his greatest conflict is that he wants to be reunited with the love of his life. Above all, Rogers comes across as a real human being who could have lived now as well as then. The power of his letters comes from the fact that he describes the dangerous training, the chaotic dogfighting, the horrors of war to a woman who has little knowledge of what he is going through. This brings a freshness and vitality to his account of fighting in the air during the Great War.

Excerpt from The Electric Automobile: Its Construction, Care, and Operation

The many inquiries, both personal and written, made of the writer as to the operation, use and possibilities of the electric automobile have led him to write the following book on the subject; and as these inquiries have come very largely from people who are neither engineers nor mechanics, but are interested in the purchase and use of automobiles, the book has been written in a language as void as possible of technical nomenclature, although for lack of words to express some things, he has been obliged to use phrases commonly employed by technical and engineering fraternities. But the book is not meant in any sense as a technical or engineering work.

Illustrated Plates at the Close Make it Worthwhile, But Otherwise a Pretty Dry Read
By Don Kidwell
OK for electric car buffs maybe, but was a slow read for me. Does have an active table of contents which can be of help, tho I was rarely ever engaged in the material. I'd suggest having a free sample sent first and taking it out for a 'test drive' before you buy.

Excerpt from Automatic Sprinkler Protection

This book is based on a series of lectures delivered by the writer before the Insurance Library Association of Boston in the spring of 1913. These lectures covered the third year course in the subject of Fire Protection as outlined by the Insurance Institute of America. In this book the lecture notes have been greatly amplified in an effort to cover more thoroughly all phases of the subject.

There has been added an appendix in which all sprinkler heads, about which any information could be obtained, are listed alphabetically, and briefly described. Several years ago the writer listed and photographed the sprinkler heads shown in the first edition of the Crosby-Fiske Hand Book of Fire Protection these being taken largely from the collection owned by the Underwriters' Bureau of New England These were afterwards rephotographed and a number were added. The authors of the Hand Book have kindly loaned these cuts for use in the appendix. A number of new types and variations of old types have been added to this list but as the names and numbers as given in the Hand Book have become quite generally recognized throughout the country, care has been taken not to change these and fractional numbers have in some cases been used to designate sprinklers that have come to notice since these photographs were taken.

Having been a member of the Committee on Automatic Sprinklers of the National Fire Protection Association for several years, the writer has had an opportunity to keep in touch with all the late developments in this interrogation art.

American Road Race Specials, 1934-70: Glory Days of Homebuilt Racers, by Allan Girdler

Once upon a time, there was a guy named Max Balchowsky who decided he wanted to beat Ferrari and Jaguar at their own game-road racing. The trouble was, he didn't have the cash for a factory racer. So he built his own. Using a Ford homemade tube frame, a souped-up Buick V-8 and running on recapped whitewalls, Ol' Yaller whipped them all.

Welcome to American Road Race Specials 1934-70. These were the glory days of road racing in the United States, from the first races between imported MGs to the world-winning Made-in-the-USA Scarabs and Chaparrals, and on toe the downfall of the Shadow.

This is the story of the men who built and ran their own homemade cars in pioneer SCCA and Cal Club races on town streets, airports and then the first purpose-built American racetracks. Here is Jim Hall, Lance Reventlow, Ken Miles, Carroll Shelby, Ak Miller, Balchowsky, Troutman and Barnes, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Roger Penske, George Follmer, and all the rest. . . .

And the cars: Ol' Yaller, Cunningham, Scarab, Chaparral, Kurtis, Devin, Zerex Special, Bocar, Caballo de Hierro, Pooper, Shadow, Ferraries with Chevy V-8s and every other possible chassis-engine combination a racer could think of. Some were crude, others deceptively homespun; most were half hot rod, half sports car-all of them were unique and built with passion.

Historian Allan Girdler's straight-talking technical writing and colorful storytelling brings to life the home-builts' history as no other could. Girdler is a former Car Life and Cycle World editor and is currently an editor-at-large for Road & Track. His other books include Harley-Davidson Racing 1934-1986 and Harley-Davidson XR-750.

Buy this new edition!
By Mark Graham
There are really no other books that come close. If you are interested in homebuilt racers, this is what you want. If you are into the glory days of the trans-am, there is a separate book for that. If you want to know all about the Scarab, I saw a copy going for almost $100 solely on that topic... but I would recommend this book first. Allan Girdler knows so much about racings motorcycles and cars, you're in for a treat! The new edition of this book is a great bargain and of good quality.

highly recommended
By Robert C. Wolff
Complete coverage of the time when "the little guys: with ideas and home engineering could challenge and sometimes beat the factory teams in sports var racing. Covers the Jim Hall GM connection very well and devotes a fair share of space to Old Yellow.

Holds your attention from beginning to end, highly recommended

A good overview of the sports car specials of the era
By Rick Stone
A very good overview of the sports racing machines of the era, drawing on contemporary reports to flesh out the specs and performance of many of them. A balanced approach to the vehicles' relative merits. Ken Miles's early cars, as well as others of the late 1940's and '50's, are of particular interest. More sophisticated builds, such as the Scarabs, Chaparrals and McLarens, as well as the early V8 experimentation with Chevy, Ford and BOP aluminium engines, are also dealt with.
